They wind up having some of the best careers in Grizzly history.
Many said how conservative and boring Bobby Hauck's offense was, YET, Marc broke several career and single-season receiving records, and Chase is second only to Yo in all the career and single season rushing records. And yes, I'm aware about playoff stats not being included, BUT, they started including them in 1997, so as far as Griz' careers go, those gaps really only apply to Dave Dickinson and Joe Douglass.
NOW comes the WORST OFFENSE AND WORST years of Grizzly football, under Mick Delaney, and YET. Jordan Johnson and Jordan Canada have skyrocketed up the Griz' career record books. How is that possible in an offense, with a coach who shackled them for TWO FULL SEASONS, minus last Saturday's beatdown of the Cats.
First a look at some JJ Numbers: Going into Saturday's playoff game, JJ is third on the all-time passing yards list at UM with 8,236 yards. Only DD and Brian Ah Yat have more. He's also third in career passing TD's with 73, with the same two greats ahead of him. Johnson also has the No. 6, No. 22, and currently the No. 21 best single-season passing marks in Grizzly history. And guess what, his 2011 mark, which is currently No. 22 on the all-time list, was under Pflu. His mark that is No. 6 on the all-time list is last season, in which he threw for 3,387 yards and did in three less games played than in 2011. Johnson is also third in career TDs responsible for and is currently fourth in career wins by a QB. Only DD, Ah Yat and Cole Bergquist have more wins as a starter than JJ does. And supposedly, JJ has played on two of the single worst teams UM has EVER HAD according to some.
Those are only a handful of the career lists that JJ is on.
Now Canada. He played for Pflu as a freshman, he only had 37 less carries than did Peter Nyguen that season, and rushed for 580 yards. Yet, in three years in the worst offense in the history of Montana football, with the worst coaching staff of Grizzly football (Not my words), he will finish fourth on the all-time rushing list behind only Yo and Chase and Lex. He has back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons under MD. He will also finish fourth in career rushing touchdowns, and his two 1,000 yard seasons are in the Top 10 for single season rushing in Grizzly history.
Now, I'm not saying by any means that the last two years of offense was entertaining to watch, or even the style I personally like. But what I am saying is, alot of Egrizzers harken back tot he old days when criticzing the current regime and talk about holding players back and short-changing them. Yet, under the current coaching staff, Jordan Johnson and Jordan Canada have surpassed a lot of Grizzly greats from the eras and coaching staffs you all still wish the Griz had. So there's two schools of thought here: 1. The coaches did indeed NOT hold these guys back. OR. 2. Would you say that IF these two would have played for Don Read or Joe Glenn the two coaches who coached the players who are ahead of them on these lists, and they wouldn't have held these guys back, then would Jordan Johnson and NOT DD, be the greatest statistical QB of all time, and Canada and not YO, be the greatest statistical running back of all time?
No matter what you think, I find these numbers interesting, and I just don't think players can achieve this level while completely being held back by inept coaching or inept schemes, and IF I'm wrong, than the latter is true, and these two are actually better players than DD and Yo because without inept coaching, they most certainly would have blown by both of those career leaders on those respective lists.
