Funny, I received academic scholarships but had to take out PELL Grants and loans(that took me 10 years to pay) and still had to work 25 hours/week so I could have extra money to spend and help pay my tuition every semester.........

@ Putter - Pell Grats are FREE money. Not to be confused with the National Student Loan Program. This is FREE money (thus it is defined as a "grant")...this whole concept of paying players a stipend is widely supported by coaches, administrators & the parents of so called full ride athletes.

Put your big boy & large lady pants on because its about to happen.
Do yourself a favor & read the two articles linked to this post. Here's the latest from CBS Sports Online. http://www.cbssports.com/columns/story/21495201/with-move-toward-stipends-plan-shows-more-gap-between-haves-have-nots" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Get over your pre-concieved notions about the business behind big time college football& basketball. It's big business & big dollars being made off the backs of young athletes many of whom will never play professionally. Yet the generate billions of dollars through they're efforts.

They are estimating a 270% increase in revenues. These athletes have earned a cut of the proceeds...give it to them & be fair about it!

I am NPB & I approve this message.

I agree with the proposal to provide some sort of stipend to student athletes, particularly if it is tied to stricter penalties for NCAA rules violations regarding financial assistance. One of the things this may eliminate or at least reduce would be the matter of outside booster influence that occurs in virtually every high level program. It is naive to think that a full ride scholarship means that the student athlete does not have expenses that must be paid and alot of these kids simply do not have any other means because of the antiquated way the NCAA restricts the student athletes ability to obtain additional funds.

Whether it is on a need basis or whether it is made part of the scholarship package is the question. I'm not sure about the need basis discussed in the article because there aren't enough details to establish what constitutes "need". I think that any stipend could be tied to academic performance as well as athletic participation. If the student athlete's grades fall below a certain level they forfeit at least a portion of the stipend, as compared to their entire scholarship. Likewise, a student athlete who breaks a team rule and is suspended from participation should forfeit a portion of any stipend.

I think overall it needs to happen. I would just be concerned over how to distribute and monitor the process.

Good Rule. Universitiies make millions off these kids. Least we can do is cover the full cost of going to school.

If you don't pay them you will be at a disadvantage in recruiting in the FBS anyway

The NCAA revenue for the MBB tournament is 770 million per year. The projected revenue for the new football "playoffs" is 470 million. How in the world can they find money to help schools with the proposed stipend?

If they are going to pay the athletes I think they should at least make the kids copy down names from a phone book onto voter initiative petitions.

Doubt the NCAa will help pay at all. Big boys starting to wean out the wannabe D1 teams by measures like this. more to come. They are not going to break away from the NCAA, they are going to keep changing the rules to make it harder to stay D1 and thin down the numbers to where they want them.

just going to pay for books, laundry money, dorm food, etc.....cost of living money

This is a bit of a boondoggle. Do just football and men's basketball teams get paid, or do the other sports get to share the revenue? I like the idea on some levels, but not enough schools make enough money from sports for this to happen. Especially if they are going to have to start paying gymnasts and water polo players.

:clap: :clap: :clap: I almost pass out laughing every time I hear, "where will the money come from?" BTW if you don't generate the money, IMO you are not entitled to any of it. The non-revenue producing programs already benefit.

Have you ever heard of a little thing called Title IX? There's no way they'll be able to get away with paying only football and MBB players. And for all you UM Business majors, do you grasp the difference between revenue and profit? Only a handful of D-I athletic programs actually turn a profit, despite bringing in millions in revenue.
