Thats not accurate about a player being waived, place on IR, and then making practice squad salary. When a player is hurt badly enough to miss the season say, he can be waived immediately and if they dont want to keep the player around, they do an injury settlement and cover the costs of surgery and rehab. If the team wants the player around, then they still cover the costs of surgery and rehab (done with the clubs medical staff) and then depending on if the players contract has a "split" within it (splits are usually part of the first year or two of players contracts who were drafted in the later rounds) the player makes 70% of their salary if they were on the active roster divided by the 17 week regular season. Marc and Shann are not in their first or second year of their contract, so they are guaranteed their base salary for this season. In Mcsurdys case, hes probably making 70% of his base contract because he's on IR and was drafted in the 7th round. In Jabins case, undrafted free agents splits are very similar to late rounders, so if they want to keep him he's making more than practice squad, but if they are going to do a settlement, they will pay him and then ship him out when hes healthy.
