Indiana State Sycamores scouting report

Starting to feel real good about this defense. The offense is due for a breakout game. I’m hoping this is the week we put together our best 4 quarters yet and get something like a 42-14 Griz win!
With Idaho looming next week, a focused, well-played game in all three phases, offense, defense--would love to see 4 or 5 sacks !!!-- and special teams, solely focused on Indiana State this week would be a real boost heading into the Vandals' nationally televised game next week !!!

Go GRIZ. !!!

Let’s give some credit to UND, they are good and had a lot to do with the Griz slow start. Indiana State is not UND, if this is even remotely close at halftime something is terribly wrong.
To what do you attribute the "close at halftime" against the D-II opponent then?

uhh first game of the year and the opponent already played one game maybe? I think that's fair
I think that had a bigger effect than people want to admit. Especially when you consider it was also an entire week of practice shorter on the Griz side. That matters, and I have never talked to a coach who has said that a week less of practice is no big deal. I'd prefer we never take that first week off, again.

OK. Fair enough. We'll see what the reasoning is when this one is 17-14 or 21-17 or something like that at the half.

How many weeks into the season before we can't use that excuse any more?

Asking for a friend...that has both the ST and the D in the BSC Fantasy League...
I was mostly kidding. I think that we are probably hitting the point where that can't be a reason.

Also, the worst part about this BSC fantasy league is that I now have a part of my brain that wants the Griz D and ST to do well.... but maybe not toooooooo well.

This is from the ISU website...NOTE they have an all-time winning record in games played on September 20...its the small victories that matter I suppose. 🤭 This is an extremely long trip for them and they tout traveling just over 8,000 miles for the season, and the coaches press conference noted that they would have to spend the night in Missoula.

Indiana State against the Big Sky
Indiana State has only played against one current member of the Big Sky Conference with the 2022 matchup against Montana the lone time the Sycamores have lined up against the conference.

Sycamores On the Road (2025 edition)
Indiana State football embarks on the first of three road trips that will involve flights this season as the Sycamores make the 1,709-mile trek to Missoula, Mont. this weekend to take on the Grizzlies. Indiana State's road trips for the 2025 season include bus trips to both Southern Illinois and Youngstown State, while flights to North Dakota and South Dakota State still loom on the schedule. Overall, the Sycamores will cover 8,118 total miles over the course of the 2025 season with the trip to Missoula accounting for nearly half the mileage on the season.

2025 Road Trips (Miles Traveled)
Sept. 12 – Indiana State at Indiana (113 miles)
Sept. 20 - Indiana State at Montana (3,420 miles)
Oct. 4 – Indiana State at Southern Illinois (386 miles)
Oct. 25 – Indiana State at North Dakota (1,828 miles)
Nov. 2 – Indiana State at South Dakota State (1,529 miles)
Nov. 16 – Indiana State at Youngstown State (842 miles)

The Saturday contest the farthest west Indiana State has traveled to play a game and just the third time Indiana State has competed in the Mountain Time Zone according to current records on hand. Indiana State traveled to New Mexico State on Sept. 9, 1978 (L, 14-9) and Sept. 22, 1979 (W, 40-23) during a five-game annual matchup between the Sycamores and the Aggies.

On This Date
Indiana State is 5-3-1 all-time on games played on September 20 in program history according to current records on hand. The Sycamores have a 2-1-1 mark on the road over the date with wins at both Southern Illinois and Murray State, while falling to Northern Illinois. The Sycamores battled Western Kentucky to a 7-7 tie in 1969. Indiana State's last game on the date came back in the 2008 season.

1952 – Illinois State (W, 33-7)
1958 – Eastern Illinois (L, 30-8)
1969 – at Western Kentucky (T, 7-7)
1975 – at Southern Illinois (W, 23-21)
1980 – Eastern Illinois (W, 14-0)
1986 – at Iowa State (L, 64-9)
1997 – Southern Illinois (W, 19-14)
2003 – at Murray State (W, 17-10)
2008 – at Northern Illinois (L, 48-3)

Quite honestly, the offense isn't near explosive or consistent enough to score tons of points. Also, this team, Hauck teams, aren't built that way. Not even sure why people ask the question.

Thankfully, our schedule isn't going to permit an excuse the other way where we face an opponent coming of an open week. I would dread hearing about an opponent being rested when Montana has played X straight weeks without a break. I feel we will still hear the count at some point inevitably, but we'll save all those things for down the road.
