you can beat up all you want on the bottom of our league, but the class of the league is above and beyond anything the big sky has to offer. gonzaga is the better program and it isn't even close. when the big sky starts to have teams consistently ranked and winning tourney games, let me know.

Gonzaga is 14-29 all-time against Weber State. Gonzaga has 1 all-time win in Ogden the other 13 were in Spokane. I'm not sure the exact record in Ogden but I think it is 1-21. Portland is 0-8 vs Weber State. WSU is 52-22 vs the WCC.

Trash talkin wasn't the point of this thread.

we zags have a losing record against many teams from 1900-1999. u of w is a great example. we were simply dominated by them in the 20th century, but in this decade they beat us once in 9 tries. The Program is the class of the West Coast and it isn't even close. Enjoy your 15-16 seed.

in 2007 we were a 15 seed and gonzaga was a 12 seed. it was our most recent appearance and our lowest ever seed. the 2 games were back to back in the same session, i was at both games. i picked gonzaga to win and of course wsu. both weber and gonzaga got schooled.

i am a zag fan; i am a fan of all schools that move on from the sky and succeed.

in 2003 we were a 12 seed in spokane. when our fan bus rolled into town a lady held up a sign from her car that said go zags. it was pretty funny.

So 1986cat, are you a cat fan? If so, I'd think you'd be happy about the obvious improvement in the Big Sky this year. The Big sky hasn't been just beating up on the bottom of "your" league either. Portland is hardly what I'd consider the bottom. They had a great start this season, and are currently ranked in the Mid Major poll. LMU is also having a solid year so far (7-7). They have wins against Notre Dame, and USC on the road which I'd call pretty damn good.

As weberwildcat pointed out, this thread wasn't intended to start smack. I personally think it's great that the Big Sky is doing well in non-conference. It wasn't too long ago that Gonzaga was a team that would've been middle of the pack in the Big Sky. As I'm sure you are aware, the teams in the Big Sky would like to build their programs into something like Gonzaga has now. Sure it may not happen as quickly as it did with Gonzaga, but that doesn't mean we all should just ignore improvement because our conference hasn't had the success that Gonzaga has lately.

The recent ratings of Gonzaga are more from the media's fascination with them and the coach than the actual performance of this team. Gonzaga has a good strong schedule but they lose games to teams that are not so admired...Gonzaga, like Montana, is a work in progress. Both have good coaches, but Gonzaga has a couple years head start. Tinkle is well on his way to bringing UM hoops back. I hope they meet in the NCAA...

I am a graduate of Gonzaga. Please, LA Griz, don't try to compare the Montana basketball with Gonzaga. The programs aren't as close as you think. A few things you list without providing evidence for:

1) We lose to teams that "aren't so admired." What teams? We went undefeated in our conference last season. We beat several quality teams on our way to the Sweet 16. Unlike the U of M and the Big Sky conference, Gonzaga is going to get into the dance every single year with their quality resume whether or not they win the conference tournament.

2) A "work in progress." Gonzaga has elite facilities. Gonzaga gets elite recruits. Gonzaga has a better fan base, both in Spokane and nationally. Montana isn't close. Gonzaga has made the tournament every single year since 1999. How many times has Montana made it?

3) Both have "good coaches." Mark Few has a career .8000 winning percentage at Gonzaga. Where is Wayne Tinkle?

Gonzaga used to play U of M on a regular basis, but the series became a waste for the Zags. The most recent game, in the 2007-2008 season, was not competitive. I would rather see Gonzaga play Duke and get killed by them every year while learning a great deal about fundamental basketball than play an average team in the Big Sky conferece.

LA Griz, perhaps you have been in LA for too long. You obviously lack the requisite common sense and basic knowledge to comment on this forum.

I know enough to know Gonzaga is not as good as the they and the media think they are....I watched them play.....they lost...but, if you are so down on the inferior conference and the lousy Montana team and coach, why aren't you cheerleading on your own semi university web site....Gonzaga is not the class of a major league...it is a mid major just like Montana....I wish the Griz could play the Loyola Marymounts every year...like Gonzaga...the "school" that cannot afford a foot ball team..

I find it funny how Zag fans (at least the few that seem to troll these boards) seem to like to come over to this board just to crap all over other teams accomplishments because it makes them feel superior. I guess it makes them feel better after they get their asses handed to them by a team like Duke (ouch..76-41). Funny that the Griz did better against Duke last year than the Zags did this year... the Griz at least scored more than 17 points in the first half

Really? So that's why the Zags didn't play the Griz the past couple of years? You really know that for sure, or are you just making shit up at this point to try to boost your ego a little more? Maybe Duke should just stop playing the Zags since the last game wasn't even close to competitive...

If the Zags really stopped playing the Griz because it was a "waste" for the Zags, then why did the Zags play the powerhouse known as MSU Billings last year? Remember last year, the almighty Zags almost lost to the lowly big sky conference member Portland State...

So far this year, the Zags have played Eastern Washington, Mississippi Valley State (1-12 this year with 0 Div1 wins), Augustana ILL (Div2? NAIA? Not sure..), and IPFW (5-7). Guess that kind of shoots your theory down doesn't it?

LA Griz and Dexter:

You haven't answered any of my questions. Your main point that links Montana and Gonzaga is that they are both mid-majors. True. So is Butler. So is Xavier. Montana is not competitive with any of these programs and it isn't close. The Duke game was an awful display of our program, but one game is not indicative of the program's overall stature, unless of course you will concede that losses at powerhouse programs Denver and Idaho state are indicative of YOUR program. And, by the way, the MSUB game was an exhibition game for the Zags. It didn't count. It was a warmup. For every easy game we played this year, I can name 2 more games that were not. Cincinnati. Colorado. Wake Forrest. Duke. Michigan State. Wisconsin. Washington State. Oklahoma. Memphis. EWU because it is 20 minutes away. They haven't beaten us since the beginning of the Clinton Administration.

The contention that Gonzaga "isn't as good as the media thinks they are" is supported by one poll, perhaps the ESPN/USA Today poll. The coaches poll suggests that the Zags are as good as people with actual basketball knowledge DO think that Gonzaga is that good. I know it frustrates you that the mid-major poll has been dominated by Gonzaga, but that poll is meaningless outside of mid-majors. We Zags do not care about that poll, because ultimately it does not contribute to our seeding and is irrelevant come tourney time.

Nice dig on the lack of a football program, but be honest. Does Montana really have a basketball program? Losing to Idaho State and tanking so badly at the end of last season suggests that you have a shell of a program. Gonzaga doesn't need a football program to have elite facilities with an elite coach, elite players, and a dedicated fan base. I have been to U of M games, LA Griz, and they do not regularly sell out. They do not have a dedicated traveling fan base. Their alumni are limited to the greater Montana and Northwest.

It is remarkable that Griz arrogance extends beyond what they can legitimately call a powerhouse football program (readily conceded), but also to what they CANNOT legitimately call a powerhouse basketball program. I know it is infuriating to have the dominant program of the West Coast only three hours to the west, but be realistic. Montana isn't Gonzaga. Montana can't compete with Gonzaga. Montana will get a win against some lowly team in the WCC and call it a strong victory. Gonzaga will do the same thing, televised on ESPN, because it is what we are supposed to do.

Sorry Griz basketball fans. You have an excellent football program and should be proud of it. Your basketball program is a nice little upstart, but it isn't competitive with Gonzaga. If you think differently, LA Griz, you might want to delve into the facts before you start spewing nonsense.

Wow, so not only are you an arrogant prick who likes to hijack threads on other teams forums to go on and on about how great Gonzaga is, you are a delusional arrogant prick.

No one here said that the Griz are as good as Gonzaga. No one said the Griz BB team is a "powerhouse". If you actually go back and read the original post, it's by a Weber fan pointing out the Big Sky record against a couple good mid major conference as a sign that the Big Sky has improved so far this season in comparison to the previous seasons. Which, unlike your replies, was actually interesting to read and contributed something to this forum. Then you appear out of no where to hijack the thread about how great Gonzaga is, when the original post mentioned nothing about Gonzaga other than EWU was going to play them on Dec 28th. Then to add to the hijacking, you make up complete bullshit as if you are close enough to the Zag program to know why they schedule or don't schedule certain opponents. Wow, get some help man.... :?

Maybe you should go back to the Zag board with your drivel so you and other Zag trolls can all spend the rest of the BB season patting each other on the back until you get whooped by some major team like Duke in the NCAA tournament. Then you can spend the off season crying on each others shoulders after your delusions on greatness come crashing back down to reality in a violent 76-47 beating..

Last yr our 2nd place team beat Gonzaga on their home court and GU was #7 in the nation.

WSU's Coach Rahe on the Big Sky this year AND ACTUALLY RELEVANT TO THIS THREAD (lol thanx 86cat):

"The conference is as good as it's been since I've been here [2006-07]," Rahe said. "It's going to be an absolute fistfight every night in conference. Good, bad, ugly — all you can do is move on to the next one and see where you're at in a couple of months."

I have nothing against the Vikings. Last year they earned a quality win against the Zags in one of the hardest places to play in the country. It was no fluke - they beat us soundly.

My argument rests on one fact: Gonzaga is almost always ranked. Just the opposite, almost no teams in the Big Sky are ever ranked. Joining Gonzaga in the rankings can often be Saint Mary's or Portland. When the tournament comes around, at least 2 and often WCC teams make it while only one Big Sky team makes it.

We play the game to win. We play the game in the NCAA tournament to win. That is what matters to Zag fans. I am not sure about Grizzlies, but Gonzaga's goal every single year is to make the Sweet 16 at least. I absolutely enjoy Big Sky conference basketball, but Griz fans are absolutely toxic. They have unchecked arrogance and, despite what they say, will never be as good as either Weber State, PSU, let alone the Zags. Dexter X, get a grip on reality. I have never made excuses for the Duke game. It was an important lesson in humility on the way to the NCAA tournament. We'll see you there again when hell freezes over. Beating Denver and Idaho State will be important stepping stones along the way. As for Weber State and PSU, you could learn much from these two solid programs.

Get a grip on reality huh? You hijack this post which had absolutely nothing to do with the Zags, make up some bullshit reason for why the Zags haven't played the Griz in a couple years, insult the big sky conference multiple times, then make it sound like us Griz fans are delusional, arrogant, and think the Griz are as good as the Zags... and say I need a grip on reality? Did you escape from warm springs recently or something or did you just go off your meds? Are the voices in your head telling you that people here think the Griz are better than the Zags, or do you just lack basic reading comprehension?

No one here is saying that the Griz are as good as the Zags. This post was about the improvement in the big sky as a whole. It wasn't about just the Griz, just Weber, or PSU, and it sure as hell had absolutely nothing to do with your beloved Zags.

Here's a news flash for you.... This section of the forum is for talking about the Big Sky Conference Basketball programs not about how no one else can compare to your Zags.... If you want to hijack threads to try to make them about the Zags, and talk about the Zags with the other 2 Zag trolls that used to frequent here, go here:
