Describing the situation that prevailed before the investigations prompted changes, Williams said: "The football team was recruiting too many thugs. Rape was not the only problem. There was vandalism, there were personal assaults, and there was destruction of property. The players were pampered and adored. Too many of them had the feeling they were bulletproof and immune to the rules that all of us must follow. They acted like arrogant marauders."

In the face of numerous allegations involving football players, Williams said, the university's "procedures were not good" and the authorities "failed to follow up on accusations from women."

But he also praises the changes the university has made even as the investigations have continued. University president Engstrom, Williams says, "welcomes and is eager to have the help that is coming from the investigations" and has dealt with episodes of misconduct "quickly, harshly and appropriately."

The last part is better, I'm glad he's pointing out that there's newer/better systems in place. However he's still speaking on rumor or issues where no arrests were made. Vandalism? When? I'm not doubting it happened but why does it take a Regent in an espn/NYT article for this to come about. Personal assaults? When? Where's the arrests? There was the whole Coleman/Pate arrest... 7 years ago... Fights happen I don't doubt that, I've heard the stories. However the damages these comments are making to the program and the overwhelming tide of good kids he's throwing under the bu, based on... something... ugh...

It is about a BOR more interested in his personal agenda than the University system he is supposed to be representing.
He should go, and I wrote to the two people that can see that it happens....

So with at least 2 football players charged with assault in the last year, then letting another player with a criminal drug record onto the team this year, should they still say MSU is recruiting thugs.

I email you this evening with concern and outrage over recent comments made by Pat Williams.  Mr Williams comments are completely uncalled for and false.  To indicate that the UM has recruited nothing but thugs is an all out lie.  There are plenty of great things many of these young men due around the community for charities, youths etc. Does Mr. Williams take that into consideration before he makes comments such as he did, I think not.

With Mr Williams serving on the BOR one would think his mission and goal would be for the betterment of the the education system in Montana, including the U of M.  Mr. Williams comments seem to be just the opposite. Rather than to aid and improve his comments look to harm and punish.

Mr. Williams is entitled to his opinion, but he should be capable of using better judgement and keeping comments such as this to himself.  Mr. Williams with his comments only added more negative attention to an already sensitive situation.  For this it is my opinion that Mr. Williams be removed as a member of the BOR.
