If UNI Can Do It, Why Couldn't the Griz?

Something to shoot for. (Pun not intended.) Not out of the question, esp. as Coach Tinks has been here long enough to have recruited players to not only win the BSC championship but to get to the Big Dance. It's time to aim for more than just "making it." The goal should be the Sweet Sixteen, at least. UNI is in the same classification as UM, with 1K fewer students. UNI knocking off the Jayhawks was monumental & should be a wake-up call to UM. The game was a fluke? Maybe. But, UNI, unlike UM, has been hanging around the Big Dance a long time, now.

When's it time for Griz basketball to vie for the Sweet 16? Griz football vies for the NC, which I consider an equivalent. Ok, ok, a football NC is not a basketball NC. That's not what I'm saying. All I'm saying is if a small school, like UNI can knock off a perennial NC basketball contender, why can't UM aspire to the same thing? UNI raised the stakes for UM.

Just because Montana and Northern Iowa both compete at the FCS level in football, I would not necessarily say that they are comparable on the basketball court. The MVC has been a much better league than the BSC the last few years earning multiple bids in the NCAA Tourney multiple times. The MVC has had success in the first two rounds. The MVC has only gotten a single team in the last 3 years, but between 1994 and 2007, they were usually a multiple bid league, with having 4 teams in 2006. The MVC has had multiple sweet 16 teams including 2 in 2006. I do not think that comparing Northern Iowa and the MVC with Montana and the BSC is exactly and apples to apples deal currently. The entire BSC would have to improve first.

On the other hand, Northern Iowa was DII a few years ago and competed with all the Dakotas in the North Central Conference.

Sometimes, after reading some of these posts, I think one of the greatest obstacles to UM athletics is the "WE ARE NOT BIG ENOUGH, RICH ENOUGH, OR GOOD ENOUGH" attitude, that seems to over ride the posts here....When Griz fans stop seing a game against New Mexico as a "big step up" or playing a Pac 10 team as something special, then UM will have the attitude they need to go along with the improving talent level. UNI, Butler, Sienna, St. Mary's, even Gonzaga, to name just a few, think they can win every game with 5 or 6 good players and a good coaching staff...and they are right...time for UM to see that the glass in Missoula is full....

yup.

We were not too far off doing that this year. Had AJ even had an average game or we hit a few more FT's. we matched up with UW well, in fact had an advantage inside. Who knows what would have happened, seriously I would have liked our chances against the UW.

Next year if we can build some depth and collectively replace AJ scoring, we have a good chance. The Big Sky Conference though will be bear next year. GRIZ, Weber State, EWU, NAU, UNC, and MSU all have key players returning. Sac State and Portland State can compete too. The only progam I see likely to struggle badly next year is ISU. It will be a dog eat dog confernce next year. I will be surprised if the league winner goes better than 11-5. Many teams will be bunched between 7 and 10 wins.

I honestly feel the BSC as whole is getting better. Top to bottom the BSC is getting deeper. I hope that lasts for awhile too.

Best thing Fullerton ever did was mandate that schools needed to start scheduling teams in the top 100 RPI. Better competition produces better results

Don't give Dougie anymore credit than he deserves for this...which is hardly any. The fact of the matter is he didn't do shit until discussions began to consider taking away the auto bid for the BSC. If Dougie were on the ball he would have been PROactive, not REactive and took this step years ago. If he had, no telling where the BSC might be now. Fullerton is a horrible commissioner.

Seems to me that putter & Grizbacker both endorse the idea of the BSC to schedule like MVC has:

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratings_Percentage_Index:

"Also, some mid-major conferences regularly compel their member teams to schedule opponents ranked in the top half of the RPI, which could boost the strength of that conference and/or its tougher-scheduling teams. The Missouri Valley Conference has successfully done this: It has become one of the top-rated RPI conferences, despite having very few of its teams ranked in the two national Top 25 polls."

The MVC includes, of course, UNI. Are you guys saying that the BSC now does this?

The Big Sky seems to be making more of an effort, but the MVC is a far superior conference. Just three years ago they had 4 or 5 teams in the dance and 3 or 4 of them made it to the sweet sixteen.

The Big Sky will never be that good. The Big Sky only wins one tourny game per decade.

The best thing that could ever happen is you walking in front of a train. You are the biggest POS on the planet. I would love to meet your chump ass someday and tell you how I really feel.

Grizbacker1 - Not so thinly veiled threats....really? It's like the junior high playground again? I like to think (pretend?) that the Big Sky teams fanbases can rise above the lowest common denominator crap that abounds on ACC/SEC/Big 10/Big 12/Pac 10 fan forums.

Back to basketball....
I'd love for the Griz, or any Big Sky team for that matter, to accomplish what Northern Iowa just did. Or what Butler is still doing. But I think it's a long way off. Things are better across the board in the Big Sky Conference than in the past but the conference doesn't have the depth and talent that the Missouri Valley Conference currently holds.

Basketball's number 1 with the MVC and football's number 1 with the BSC. Priorities are in place.
