Im sure current FCS schools are lining up to get the life sucked outta them in the Big Joke Conference. Talk about a revenue loss..... but Im sure SUU, Idaho State, Sac State, Weber and Northern Colorado are beacons of financial hope for schools in the current WAC. Im sure they take one look at Foolertons new Root TV plans for the Big Joke Conference and are dazzled by the $$$$.
Edit note - TBH all the schools in the BSC are pathetic with the exeption of the 2 montanas and UND in the future for revenue.

There is substantially more to collegiate athletics than football. The BSC serves a great diversity of institutions whose cultures are quite different. Sac State has their niche, Idaho State may become what it was once, Weber is a basket ball school that can on rare occasions beat the Griz on the gridiron, Northern Colorado is investing in facilities and will be competitive...the weak sister is SUU and even they beat the Griz sometimes...but there are women's sports, winter sports, track, net sports, etc..state schools must serve the interests of the state as best they can...the BSC seems to do that for the member schools...Tokyogriz said:

Football pays the bills for ALL Athletics at UM plus a chunk of academics.
Of course the real issue, once you get past the $$ aspect is UM would be a million times better off being associated with peer institutions in academics. SUU, Sac State and NCU etc are not in the same universe in academics. Sports is pretty much a public relations tool that can attract attention, $$, prospective students, etc. I would see getting out of FCS and into FBS as being very helpful in this regard if the $$ issues could be taken care of. Big Sky schools bring NOTHING to the academic/public relations/grant $ table for UM. Cal Poly probably has the best rep of any of the other schools.

Wow..what you don't know about Sac State is a lot...NCU is also a peer institute...granted SUU is a mormon training center and offers nothing to anyone outside Utah, but UM, while above average for a state school, does not necessarily lead the conference academically...sorry..I wish it were otherwise. Jouralism and the Forestry Dept here are world class. Med school does not make a school above or below UM. Saying Northern Colorado is a peer institute is flat out idiotic. Ive been there and NCU is known for jack shit in the wide world of academics.
I agree UM students do deserve more than just a football program. I may choose to go back to school or my kids could in the future.
Being associated with schools percieved by the general public as better academic peer schools DOES help in terms of revenue for athletics and academics (through greater enrollment due to exposure mostly). SUU and NCU are junior colleges at best. Sac state is a commuter school. Portland state is basicly a commuter junior college as well. the list goes on.
This all directly correlates to the BIG SUCKS Craptastic $$$ Revenue stream as the JUCOs in our conference have no fan base what so ever. UM, MSU, Cal Poly are actually the only schools I have ever seen on national tv etc with professors in science programs etc. I do realize UND has a good fan base and a med school and they are also in a different world from the SUU, NCU, PSU Junior colleges.

so, Missoula kids at UM are slackers because they commute? Please provide some sort of proof that UM journal ists are any more world class than any one else...I know people who consider NAU as having a very superior school of forestry...I am proud to be a UM grad, but recognize the shortcomings of a chronically underfunded university. Educational snobbery is not an argument you would win, in this case..Every place has their niche and all are as good as the students and faculty that compose them. All BSC can produce a list of impressive grads...not sure about SUU...all I know about them is that they are a training school for mormons..The BSC is just fine....for now.Tokyogriz said:

Once again greater exposure for UM would be great for academics as it would likely increase enrollment and $$$ through much greater national exposure. More money equals more professors, better teachers, etc. Thats a win for UM.
