Jouralism and the Forestry Dept here are world class. Med school does not make a school above or below UM. Saying Northern Colorado is a peer institute is flat out idiotic. Ive been there and NCU is known for jack shit in the wide world of academics.
I agree UM students do deserve more than just a football program. I may choose to go back to school or my kids could in the future.
Being associated with schools percieved by the general public as better academic peer schools DOES help in terms of revenue for athletics and academics (through greater enrollment due to exposure mostly). SUU and NCU are junior colleges at best. Sac state is a commuter school. Portland state is basicly a commuter junior college as well. the list goes on.
This all directly correlates to the BIG SUCKS Craptastic $$$ Revenue stream as the JUCOs in our conference have no fan base what so ever. UM, MSU, Cal Poly are actually the only schools I have ever seen on national tv etc with professors in science programs etc. I do realize UND has a good fan base and a med school and they are also in a different world from the SUU, NCU, PSU Junior colleges.
The University of Montana has surrounded ourselves with Junior Colleges and it would be in the best both for sports revenue, academics and national exposure to change this to peer State Universities (Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, etc state universites).
