Selvig had his foot in a boot at Monday night's game...

From what I seen at CSU, it would be wise to rest Selvig until December. Can he play now? I bet he could, but it would be risking a lot for rest the season.

Why rush him back for Idaho? Obviously we are going to need him for Big Sky play. Heard any updates on his playing status?

Let him heal. If we play well, we will beat Idaho without him. No need to rush back for non-conference action.

Right now I see the men as a .500 team. Unless they show vast improvement rebounding and shooting the 3, it will be a struggle.

we really miss the big guy this year.

UGF exposed our perimeter shooting - passing game and most critically our lack of the quickness that defines the top tier from the rest of college basketball. Qvales presence underneah last seasons helped us overcome our outside lapses. Of course Cherry is a real gamer but he cannot do it alone. Selvig plays a decent game but he is no inside threat.

Idaho decent and upcoming Long Beach will tell us a lot of whether we can ratchet up our game to full speed.

....you can coach up a lot of skills but you cannot coach quick!

To be honest there is SO little a person can draw in a two game sample.

We are playing a bunch of guys that have limited to no experience at this level;
Reader, Weisner, Gregory, Hutchison, DeSheilds, and a few other that have been thrust into newer roles (Ward, Selvig) that will require adjustment.

Our three best shooters on our team are all Freshman. The more they are in the flow, the more they are going to start shooting better. Frankly it is really hard to make a transition from the High School game to the college game for perimeter shooters. Shots come differently, typically with hand in your face and the stress (at least initially) of putting the ball in the air. I know from chatting with a couple of people who went to the UGF we were guilty of passing up good looks at the basket in favor of passing the ball. Against a zone you have to almost no conscience in shooting. If you have an open shot against a sagged zone, you have to have the confidence to step into the shot and drill it.

Our bigs are inexperienced, and one of the things that Tinkle noted after the CSU game was that the bigs needed to hold their boxouts longer.

I would say that a .500 record is a bit presumptive at this point, it isn't out of the realm of possibility but I believe we are going to see a much, much better product as this rather young group of personnel get into game flow.

Grzfan...I'm not disputing that the freshmen were recruited to shoot the ball but it is way too early to claim that even one of this new bunch is "one of the three best shooters on the team". One needs to just look at last year's lack of production from the guys that were brought in just to shoot the ball.
Weisner in my opinion is a lock and will be one of the top shooters. I am always really high on all of the new guys and still hope that Wood can get it together. If we get just one guy to hit...we are going to be scary good. ;)

I am 100% sure Weisner will be a 40% 3 pt shooter, at worse. As to when, is the ? that needs answered. Like Staudacher, I could watch this kid shoot all day, and enjoy it. His shot looks too smooth to mess with, and it is a matter of time. I like the look of Gregory's shot too, granted, it was from pregame, and 1 shot at CSU. Henderson shot a good 3% last year, from what I heard ( I don't know the stats though). Watching in pregame, he did not look as smooth as Weisner, or Gregory. I did not notice Deshields, my bad. I believe Jamar is capable of getting to 40%, but not as sold on his shooting quite yet. Still needs some work. Selvig can hit at a good clip too. Mathias Ward has a real nice perimeter stroke out to 3 too, but no as smooth looking, and does not extend at all beyond the line. Jordan Wood just does not have any confidence in his shot, even though it looks solid.

These guys just have to find their shot, and have faith in it. For some reason, other than Jordan Hasquet, Selvig, and Staudacher, GRIZ perimeter shooters have struggled finding a good flow, game in and game out, in Tinkle's time here. It takes them awhile every year to be "ready" to shoot it, as they are stepping to the pass. I wonder if some of that is them wanting to be team players and move the ball around well? Over the last 5 years, I have seen 2 players I would have in a heartbeat found them at minimum 7 open 3's per game, Staudacher, and now Weisner.

Here is to hoping our shooting comes together nicely, and our shooters are ready to shoot, starting against Idaho.

Very easy for me to agree! .... with both Evizzerate and Grizfan-24... particularly your predictions that this still young team (front court particularly) has the potential to be very good.

It does not help when your 2 most experienced Forwards/Centers are both injured. Mathias back slowed him down against CSU, and Selvig's ankle will not be healthy for a few more weeks, but he can play, if they choose to push their luck.

As for Reader, and Hutchison, I seen the same thing Tinkle did when they did get position, they did not hold their position after getting it. Ditto their post play. Great posting up, just to rush a shot, and/or get frustrated. Reader, especially, plays very big in the paint. Hutch is a beast, and not afraid to bang. I am surprised to see him struggling on the boards.

I would hope we can get by San Diego without Derek, but does anyone know his status? He was wearing a boot at the Idaho game.
