I understand now. I didn't before but now I understand why the Cats have had such an inexplicable hatred for everything that is Griz.

Growing up I have always leaned toward the Griz, although I rarely got into the games. My family is a Griz family. My great uncle stayed in one of the canvas tents behind the main hall after WW1. I never really understood the hatred when I was younger. Even when I was in college at U of M I rarely went to games, I don't know why, but I didn't go, and that was when the Griz were at the top of the heap (2003-2007). I didn't start following the Griz closely until I moved out east to NYC. I think it's because I missed Montana so much that following the Griz was my way of staying connected to Montana. Through a lot of hard work and luck I was able to come back to Missoula. I'm now the proud owner of 4 season tickets.

Back to the point - We've lost 3 in a row, and it sucks. Seeing them with the trophy parading around our field, spitting and stomping on our Griz logo... made my blood boil. Specially losing the way we did (although I think it was a very fitting end to our season of fumbling games away). I understand now because its extremely difficult to imagine losing 16 in a row. "The streak" if you will. I tried to put my mind in the position of having just lost the 16th in a row as opposed to just 3... for a split second I went there and felt what that must be like. Wow. Just imagine always thinking and hoping, this is the year we win, and losing over and over again. 16 IN A ROW. I would hate us too.

It now feels like the tide is shifting, re-igniting the hate in the rivalry from our side. Well I will be there next year, in Bozeman, staying at my Cat friends house, hating them in the most respectful way I can. Because after all we are all Montanan's, but now I respect and understand the hate, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Go Griz. FTC. RTD.
 
Very good. I will always hate them, hope they get beat this week-end, and will finally respect them after 16 in a row.
 
Yup. That’s how it works alright. When I was a lot younger we lost 12 of 15 to MSU. Two six game losing streaks around wins in 69 and 70 and 71. MSU won the NC to cap it off. They were incredibly arrogant about their success against us and winning the championship. I hated Sonny Holland. He just looked like a mean guy. Then they won it all again in 84. Lots of similarities between that era and our Streak. Two championships, dominated rival.

Yeah, but your Cats were DII. It's not at all the same as the Griz streak that people actually cared about. I know it sucked for you Cat fans, and I agree with the OP.

Get more obvious, you can't.
 
In some ways, I think I should try to support a fellow Montana team and big sky rep.
Then, outta the woodwork come the emails, phone calls, and texts after the game.

It's funny to me how many complicated explanations I read that are attempting to explain something very simple-- it's a football rivalry.

Auburn and Alabama hate each other.

Clemson and South Carolina share deep, mutual loathing.

Ohio State and Michigan can't stand one another.

This is not complex. UM and MSU are in-state rivals.
 
Having lived through all 16, I can tell you it largely relates to the pure arrogance of Griz fans after the first several wins. Then, I would say Bobby fueled an increased amount of hatred on both sides after '02.

It's easy to be arrogant when you are so much better than everybody else.

You guys had enough of that in 2011 to make up for a lifetime of it from Griz fans. :thumb:

Some posters think confidence is arrogance.
 
I have never called, texted, facebooked, or in anyway rubbed all the Griz wins in a cat Fan's face .
Can't say they haven't acted the same - even some I haven't heard from in years...

We were DII then as well during those streaks. DII in those days was tougher than IAA or FCS ever has been.
