Hyperbole Check

1) Mental Agility before and during a play to be able to read defenses and adjust to different options during a play
2) Leadership and getting guys to be willing to follow in the heat of the battle
3) Footwork and timing with receivers
4) Physical Resilience and ability to get up, knock cobwebs off and get behind center again
5) Arm strength

Here is my seventh grade QB expertise 😉

How many times do football fans use this statement to describe the prowess of their QB...... "he has a really strong arm"? In my opinion, this may be the most over-used phrase when discussing a QB.

On most college teams, there are usually 2-3 position players who can throw a football as far as their QB. But, they don't play the QB position. Why? Because they lack the other MOST IMPORTANT attributes required to play that position.

Here are some other traits which make a great college QB. I will place them in order of importance from my prospective. As you can see, arm strength is way down the list. I would like to see your opinions in ranking these qualities in YOUR order of importance.

As a side note, Bobby has commented on the arm strength of our starter, Sneed, over Cam, which he states may be the more accurate passer of the two. From what I have observed in practice, Wilson has plenty of arm strength too, but combines accuracy to the equation. Is Wilson going to be the eventual answer at QB? Yes, in my opinion. But we will know much more after 2-3 games.

Here is how I rank QB attributes. Please post your order:

1) Passing Accuracy
2) Leadership
3) Pre-snap analysis of defense, dictating play-calling/audibles
4) Running Ability
5) Arm Strength

Sneed has #2, 4, & 5 in spades. We will not know about # 3 until we see him live in games. But it is #1 that concerns me, from watching him in practice. Just my observations, and am interested in reading yours.

Who has ever said that arm strength is the most important quality for a QB?

Jeez, Mr. Obvious, thanks for the post.

If you really had gone to practices and watched Sneed, you would have seen that he has been accurate in practices. Hopefully, he will be in games too.

Jamarcus Russell had a strong arm! Ryan Leaf had a strong arm! Take accuracy over arm strength any day.

Dan Marino and John Elway had strong arms.

I like this post, as it gives us something tangible to discuss. I will say those 5 are good ones to discuss. I would say using those, that my 5 would be:
Reading/understanding the defense/offense command
Leadership
Accuracy
Arm Strength
Running ability

Running ability is dependent on the type of offense and a lot of other factors. If you HAVE to run, your team is screwed because your line sucks and there is no running game. If you CAN run, it's an added dimension to an offense. I would put footwork before running ability and arm strength. Quick release is important the higher the level you play but that can be overrated as well until the NFL if you have the other intangibles. Interesting topic/post. Thanks for doing this

You are welcome. I realize that talking football on here is a stretch, especially when a post challenges the infinite knowledge of a washed-up old geezer trying to be relevant and re-living the glory days, now relegated to chasing jock straps.

No bad!

Let's have a football discussion. Arms strength or accuracy?

Has anyone noticed that some qb's have strong arms and some are more accurate?

This is a really interesting discussion. Glad someone thought of it. Before this topic, I had thought that arms strength and accuracy were the same.

True, but they had the other qualities you look for in a QB. My point was-a Strong arm does not necessarily make a great quarterback. You-being a lawyer-had to make your case for all crappy strong armed QBs by using to of the greatest QBs in history as an example. I could point out Kyle Boller among others, and the argument could go on all day.

The only football discussion you could credibly partake in is the many nuances of running the single-wing offense

As I have said, you are older than I am, and you've said various times on the internet that you never even played football. Example of your lack of knowledge: Wilson is going to be the answer at QB for the Griz, as opposed to Sneed and Humphrey. That is pretty funny. Don't think I've ever noticed or heard anyone say that.

Nice try. I said that Wilson was more accurate and would be the future. Your post says it all..... your opinion is solely derived from listening to others, because you don't have the talent to analyze a suicide bomber in an ISIS training camp, let alone anything about football. I coached high school football, and you played leather helmet football. Big difference.

This is what you said. You said it was your opinion that Wilson would be the "answer" at QB, but that it would take 2-3 games to know. If he is going to be the "answer" in 2-3 games, how is he not going to have to jump over Sneed and Humphrey? You are too to even remember what you said in the last day or two. Lack of knowledge and memory loss is a great combination.
