Graves is a died-in-the-wool Montana safety in the manner of Colt Anderson, John Sandry, etc., etc.

Graves would be a very fitting choice for the next #37

Jace has done more to earn it at this point, IMO. Don't forget he was a walk on.

I wish they would get away from giving #37 to Jr's and Sr's, the whole thing started by giving it to the up-and-coming player, a Fr or So, and if Graves moved to defense he absolutely is the best candidate. I think I heard the first Jr/Sr who got it was just 10 years ago?? Let's get back to tradition....

I believe Brown will not only be the back up this year and next, but will push for a starting position with Humphrey......look at his resume in high school and more importantly since he arrived in Missoula....he has the very good arm, size and some mobility similar to Humphry.....also the guy is very, very bright (4.0) student....he knows the offense and where to go with the ball....his leadership is there after taking Boseman high to the state championships......many people are over looking this guy imo.....no, I don't know him personally....just looking at the facts....also,,,,I had heard he is the third string qb, a decesion made a few games a go when Graves started being used on special teams and defense....Graves could be next great linebacker at about 6'3" 230 pounds, speed and a violent hitter..imo

I feel the same way, and I've posted on this forum in the past about how the #37 stuff has almost gotten too out of hand. Not to say that any of the players since Bender weren't deserving, but it still almost feels like the "Montana-Born Defensive Preseason Team MVP" award every year it's passed down.

I don't want to get all conspiracy theory on us, but you'll notice that after Bender had it and was sidelined for most of his career (which meant #37 was effectively not on the team...he isn't even listed on the 2009 or 2010 roster), it started getting handed down to upperclassmen at about the same time UM started featuring and monetizing the tradition. This might be a spicy take, but I wouldn't be surprised if UM is...encouraging the players to hand it down to "sure thing" players in their prime. Like I said, a little spicy, but it does seem a little too coincidental. :lol:

Not all that spicy. The recent in depth article basically alluded to the same thing...saying the players felt pressure to give it to a "sure thing" because of how big the tradition had gotten. Didn't necessarily implicate the university in that conspiracy, but just among the players themselves.

Well, to me it looks like the tradition changed right around the time a certain coach left...maybe that certain coach brings back the theme behind it. Hauck knew what it stood for and what it meant, don't think for a second he won't be putting in his two cents on how he feels about it. Plus, Graves kind of already has made a name for himself as an up-and-comer, what a time and player to get back to what it was about.

Yeah, it's not the "I feel I need to give this to a sure thing" feeling from the 37 wearers that's spicy, it's that it wouldn't surprise me if the school is (at the very least) actively encouraging the wearer to give it to a player the university feels is more prominent and "marketable".

Personally, I’m just irritated that we got another QB hurt in a play up game. Our last two QB injuries have come during these ridiculous games, against bigger, stronger and faster opponents. First Reese, now Dalton. At some point, playing these FBS opponents is going to cost us a season.....

That is very true. Good point. I’m looking forward to a 100% injury free season next year.

Doesn't the previous #37 pick the next one? I'm sure Jesse will make a good choice. Personally, I like someone having it more than a year or two, but they probably won't ask me. Anyone remember that video of Graves blowing up that tree? That hit Saturday totally reminded me of that. I can see #37 looking pretty good on him. I think that Hauck will encourage Simms to pass it on to Robby. I know he's not a Montana kid, but they say he is. I think specifically for that purpose.

I am not a fan of play up games. However, I don't believe either Reese or Dalton were hurt in games against FBS opponents. Dalton was hurt against Sac, and I believe Reese was hurt against Savannah State.

I am not a fan of play up games. However, I don't believe either Reese or Dalton were hurt in games against FBS opponents. Dalton was hurt against Sac, and I believe Reese was hurt against Savannah State.

Yes, I recall only Swogger and Ah Yet getting hurt in play-up games. I suppose could have contributed to costing UM a national championship.
