How would you classify the FCS football teams ?

It's called "On Any Given Day".Sure it could and will happen but not on a regular schedule would they be able to compete as a FBS mid major. With the portal things have changed esp.this upcoming season. They are certainly moving in the right direction. We will see.
I think given the portal, and NIL, if divisions were eliminated for five years, let everyone play everyone, then recreate divisions based on the success rates of the schools? Lol It's a wild idea, but I think it would be kind of cool to see, with all things equal, NIL money etc, who would rise to the top and who would sink.

A lot of the FBS teams really are not that good. The Sun Belt, Conference USA, MAC and now PAC whatever are jokes. Just about all of them are former FCS teams. NOT that it's bad, I am just saying, the FCS can compete with them, and... well, the OLD FCS could compete with them. In 2021 12 FCS teams beat their FBS opponent.

Although, there are certain schools that are consistent with their wins over FBS schools. Granted it depends on who they are playing.

The only FCS school consistently winning their FBS games is North Dakota State.

They are 9-4 overall against the FBS in football, but their last FBS win was almost a decade ago(2016). Yes they have been competitive in their FBS games, but winless in the 2020’s. Probably self-inflicted after their success as many wouldn’t schedule them so less opportunities so far this last 9 years (2 games: Arizona, Colorado).

Find me another FCS school with even a .500 record against the FBS since 2000.

Of those 9’wins - the worst gophers team in decades, awful Colorado st and Kansas teams, another awful gophers team, ball st and some other program that gets 8,000 per game. Just sayin.

my point is, if given the same amount of scholarships, and the funding to move to the FBS, UM and others could be just as competitive as the Sun Belt, MAC, Conference USA teams. Could UM ever compete with Oregon, UCLA, Alabama, UT? No. That's ridiculous. It's also why the P5 have separated from the G5 schools. the G% are the new FCS/D1AA. Same as it's ever been.

This contention that top level FCS could realistically hang with or beat top FBS programs is outright delusional. It might happen 1 in a hundred times. The gap in talent is already astronomical and gets bigger every season, especially along the lines.

Labelling the FCS as JV, while derogatory, is becoming more true by the minute in the NIL age. The fact is that it’s becoming a farm system for FBS, where our talent will inevitably be lured by promises of increased opportunities for cash and exposure.

Nailed it. FBS needs another tier where they have playoffs. That tier is the G5. UM belongs in that tier.

Agreed. The Dakota and Montana schools could pull an upset like app st did but week in week out they can’t hang. There is the power 4 conferences and then there is everybody else. Accept it.
