How will upcoming UM budget cuts impact athletics?

Engstrom along with the hire of Gwen Florio will assist in the drop of um Enrollement. No question about it.

A leader? A bungle? A joke of a leader.

So higher ed pretty much got what it wanted from the legislature this week, at least for basic funding. There's the infrastructure issue that's yet to be decided and could be a tough sell.

But MUS agreed to a tuition freeze and to not increasing fees needlessly. The fees part could be a tough one for athletics at UM, where an attempt to bring fees even up to par with MSU probably wouldn't be well received in the current environment.

A quote from someone who would know U of M Athletics is a financial house of cards

They can not take a budget cut. They are pricing some fans out now

Rumors that up to 75% of summer classes will be cut? If true, that could impact the ability of athletes to take and make up ground with summer classes.

Any information on how budget cuts will impact the Athletic Department?

I read yesterday that Spring enrollment was down 3.7% last year and another 4+% this year. In the same time, MSU's enrollment has held steady or even increased a little. Wonder why we were expecting this decline, when MSU must have been expecting to stay even??

And yet there doesn't seem to be any pressure on RE? 8+% in 2 years is pretty significant.

Down 4.7% this spring, compared to last spring.

Well based on what my niece and 2 nephews have experienced in college recruiting, I think the answer is simple.

MSU starts marketing perspective students very early with mail introducing themselves, what they offer etc. I hear they also are rather good at following up once a perspective student shows some interest. I only have 1 nephew who is still in high school, his siblings are done with HS. My niece chose to move to the midwest and not attend college. My oldest nephew is just wrapping up his FR year at the U of M studying music and business. He wants to be a music producer, performer, and talent manager. They all told me, MSU is much more aggressive than the U of M. Their fellow students in their class that were in limbo for a school chose MSU because they gave the impression they wanted them more than the U of M did.

MSU plants the seed of consideration with their mailings to the kids, meanwhile the U of M corresponds very seldom with perspective students. Even when I watch GRIZ football games with them, they wonder why they see MSU commercials during a GRIZ game? My youngest nephew is aware of what MSU has to offer because of the little things they have been doing. The only thing he knows regarding the U of M is what his older brother tells him. It seems like a big difference in effort to me. :thumb:

the reason they were expecting a decline in the spring is because they had a decline in the fall compared to last year, and you typically lose students from fall to spring. I haven't seen MSU's spring enrollment figures, but they had record enrollment for Fall, so if they don't have record enrollment for Spring that would really be a story. Frankly comparing spring enrollment to the previous year is sill. Year to year comparisons should be of the ratio of spring to fall enrollment.

The good news is student retention rates are up at UM and graduation rates have improved.
