How will Bodnar impact GRIZ athletics?

My view is that Bodnar will listen to the athletic department and communicate well with them. He will be fair, but he isn't going to give a lot to athletics or give away the store. He just can't do that politically when all academic and other departments are facing continuing large cuts. Athletics will likely be treated somewhat similarly. He will be a big supporter of athletics generally, as well as of the academic side and the school. He will be very visible. He will be at the game on Saturday, is my guess, as it's Homecoming.
I think that's a crock. Imagine those getting the money bitching if the shoe was on the other foot and their money was taken to cover athletics. Those departments and the university in general need to market themselves in a manner that they don't have to get subsidies from the football team. In sure if you got many of those guys alone they'd tell you their disdain for all that is athletics while they cash that check.

That's kinda dumb. The university is in a budget crunch. You can't just have a department that retains all of its revenue. It's a department of a larger institution. Athletics should benefit the university and all students as a whole.

Absolutely. The Griz might be the face of the University, but they are not the purpose of the University. If the University wants to regain the ground it has lost over the last decade, everyone must move forward together. I know that sounds like a corny political slogan, but it's absolutely true. You can't have athletics, academics, auxiliary services and administrators each heading in different directions and championing different causes. Universities are notorious for breeding distrust and hostile competitions between departments - for attention, for recognition, for resources. I hope President Bodnar has the vision to get everyone thinking win-win for the collective good of the University.

There are two things he can do immediately to help the athletic department, but one could be very detrimental to other departments on campus and the other will depend large measure on activities outside of his control.

The first would be to mandate that all revenues generated by the Athletics Department stay in the Athletics Department. At the very least, allow the Athletics Department to determine its own budget and then allow whatever excess remains to be placed in the general fund budget.

2) Start lobbying the BOR for fair treatment. If they give a few million to MSU for their athletics to remain competitive with UM give UM the same amount for the same purpose, or whatever and wherever UM wants to use it for. I don't know if it is still the same as it used to be, but the BOR used to routinely give money to MSU so that they would not fall behind competitively due to the inequities in revenue generation between the two campuses.

Both of these would be beneficial to the Athletic Dept and ultimately to the University as a whole.

yeah, lets lobby the BOR to make sure each school is getting what they are supposed to, (with the disparity in students between schools, MSU is getting shorted about 1.5 million to keep um afloat)

How the schools disperse that money is largely left to each school.

2506 did you happen to see the Idaho State game? Phen Phen had a tool dangling around his neck that you could probably use. Scratch that Sasquatch mess you have going on (at least that is the word on Bobcat Nation). Maybe shower once in a while though. That tool ain’t a weed wacker little buddy.

Some interesting food for thought. I wonder if Bodnar and Dennis Washington have crossed paths before? I didn't read through everything but it sounds like he knew the ins and outs of promoting the most technologically advanced locomotives available while Transportation Officer.

And he seems to like sports to boot. I know many on here that would disagree and I really didn't know the guy so its unfair for me to say....but I will....because life isn't fair. I just didn't see Engstrom as a big sports fan, or valuing the beneficial role they play (especially in this) University. I think he liked the conversation and the wine and cheese and the backslapping up in his box but likely didn't have much interest on what was going on down on the field.

With that said, big shakeups at GE last couple days. Hope Seths phone doesn't start ringing.

Furthermore, with a name like "Royce" what sports could you really be into? Now Seth....

"I’m a big sports fan, especially team sports. I love the fact that success is never attributed solely to the talent of a single athlete—it requires team strategy, coordination and communication to make hundreds of game-time decisions for the big win."

Seth was my choice for UM Pres. Amazing resume, top of his class at West Point and a leader of men. He's young (energy) and is a sports fan (competitve). I feel great about his hire...
