How was it?

I missed pretty much the entire game other than what I could make out over the static of AM radio and the crowd sounded PHENOMENAL!! I've seen the 2 and half mins of highlights on gogriz.com but was wondering if anyone wanted to give me their thoughts on how it went. Holding App State to 2 FGs had to be a crazy game!! Were the Griz lookin that good? or was App State just not there? I mean this obviously not even close to the 2009 game.

Actually a tough question NLGF. App certainly did not look like themselves, but the Griz D was damn tough - period. The offense controlled the game and really should have put more points on the board. Just a couple of miscues and I have a feeling those mistakes will get cleaned up in future games. Overall there was much to be happy about and only a few areas of concern. I am grading the Griz an A- for the day. I think we will find out how good the Griz are in two weeks. UND better be ready.

Honestly, we could have played a cleaner game, and had they done so would have made them look absolutely elite.

I mean, we basically left 21 points on the field:

Turnover on downs in the redzone on the very first drive: no score
JJ trips and fumbles the ball on their 3 on the second or third drive: no score
Kneel down at their 3 to finish the game when we could have easily scored again on our last possession: no score

The offense moved pretty much at will until the 3rd quarter, and then picked it up again in the 4th, which was a great sign, by the way.

Defense looked great apart from a stretch at the end of the first half, and beginning of the second when App got most of their yardage for the day. Holding them to 6 points was pretty unbelievable.

Overall I agree with Copper, and I'd give them an A-. Despite the mistakes, the game was never really in doubt after the third quarter.

That's AWESOME news!!! This may be a foolish question but what would the D get for a grade? The scoreboard reflects a pretty high grade but I've just gotta ask.

I don't know if app is down at all or if the griz just played really well. but from my vantage point from the gran tree here in Bozeman, it appeared the griz got their swagger back. defensively they really seemed fast and swarmed to the ball. i'd be excited as a fan. :twocents:

Now thats a classy response! Alot of the bobcat fans that post to this board have belittled the App team rather than accredit the play of the Griz team. I can't speak for the rest of Griznation, but I know I'm jacked for this season. If we can do the same to North Dakota in two weeks I will be 100% convinced that this team is for real. I think ND will be more of a test for our secondary than App.

A. Anytime you hold App to 6 points you have accomplished something. I was worried about the corners and safeties - they collectively shut my critical pie hole. The yardage and passes App made were mainly due to softer coverage at the end of the half or in the 3rd quarter when we looked flat. The D stepped up when it mattered in a big way. A huge confidence builder for the season to come and ILTC's post is exactly how I feel. BTW - if you watch the highlights from GoGriz.com, you will see an awesome stop near the goal line. I think it was Bienemann nailing the running back. Superb quicks and strength. Just think what the D Line will do when Tonga is back? This could be one stout defensive unit.

ESPN 3 still has it up. Watch for yourself. click the Replay tab.......scroll down to NCAA. The stadium atmosphere doesn't come through at all..... but the price is right.

That's what I've got rolling thru my head. App St has never been known as a "sissy" or weak team in any aspect since I've been around. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea that the Griz wouldn't even let them in the end zone!! WoW!! Yes the play around the 2:00 mark from Bienemann was OUTSTANDING!! He seen that play coming before the ball was snapped and crushed their RB! WoW!!

I looked at my dad early in the 4th and said that EXACT comment, ILTC. "They got their swagger back." :thumb: :thumb:

While the win was great, I am still looking for some answers. This was our first game of the season, and most teams are still shaking things out from training camp. Was App State still shaking things out? Were they the same team that is going to be there in November? Hard to say. But the dominance by the Griz is uncontested.
There were some miscues, but if you could objectively measure it, it seemed like this was more of an early October team than one in late August. If improvements continue as they usually do, these guys are friggin stupendous and no one is going to be able to stop them.

I hear ya. But I'm not gonna jump to any conclusions just yet. But since its early and teams are still shaking things out, come October/November the Grizzlies should be a very well oiled machine. I'm a little concernered about short passes in the center but over all they looked like they're able to handle anything that was thrown at them, including the long pass on both sides of the ball. Look Out UND!! (I was finally able to watch the game  )
