How to beat Weber State

Zone defense.

Holy crap did that confound the Wildcats in the 2nd half or what? I'll readily admit I don't know much about defensive scheme in basketball it looked like the Griz went from more man to man defense in the first half to a 2-3 zone in the 2nd half. And it seemed like especially in the last 10 minutes Weber had a heck of a time getting the ball inside. I think there were about 5 or 6 possessions where Weber kept tossing the ball around the perimeter until they had to heave up some prayer of a shot because they just couldn't get the ball underneath.

It was awfully impressive to see the Griz bottle up Weber like that. It really slowed the Wildcats down and I'll bet that in the 2nd half of the conference that Weber is going to be seeing a ton more of that.

They struggled against MSU with Zone too. They need to move the ball better, and spacing has to improve. They don't have a true play making guard this year. They have scorers, but not one consistent play maker. They need a few players to look to do what the GRIZ guards do, in taking the ball to the hole, and their other players need to be ready for the ball to score.

This killed the GRIZ against Wisconsin. They are much better at this year. They learned from that Wisconsin game. I knew Will Cherry would get better from it. Not only did he learn, but the whole team learned from it. World of difference in aggressiveness, and readiness to score this season. Our guards actually have Duke attitude, meaning get the ball to hole, and good things usually happen.

I love this year's attitude on offense.

Brint, you are right that they had a hard time getting the ball inside. But when they did, our D collapsed on the interior ball handler and was double-teamed. Mike Weisner was a huge part of taking Otis And Tresnak out of the final 20 minutes. I was pleasantly surprised.

Good point on Weisner - his defensive presence is sure felt out there and he really doesn't care who he's guarding. In both the Weber and MSU games he many times found himself guarding a guy taller/bigger than him but he still forced bad shots and got rebounds.

Mikey is tough as nails, but there were a few times Otis was just way too much for him...it was a mismatch but they only really were able to get that mismatch a few times inteh second half. I really like how with out a true big guy we are able to get it done with quick active defense. I seriously love this teams desire

I felt both Ward and Weisner were overmatched. Weber scored easily inside. We did as good as could be expected given our lack of size and we did get some crucial stops underneath toward the end. What we did do is completely take away their three point game.

As they did ours.

your right, but they were not able to exploit the mismatches down low enough....i think that is going to be teh case most games, but we find ways to overcome it

BFG I should have mentioned that as well regarding Ward and Weisner were getting beat one on one. Until the final 10 minutes. It was awesome to see Tinkle adjust when Ward or Weisner were matched up with Tresnak or Otis defensively and there was an immediate double team on them. It allowed Weisner to be way more physical, and literally cancelled out Weber's post players in the final 10.

The last 4 games, Weisner has done a great job forcing a few turnovers simply by getting a hand on the ball before bigs got the ball to their chest. He has quick hands for a post defender (which he should not be), he uses his hands well when bigs try to position themselves with the ball. Coleman is doing this well too. It looks like to me, the GRIZ are conceding post position on the blocks, then having our undersized defenders poke at the ball. If the primary defender is not doing it, one of our guards are doing it. Overall the GRIZ are great at help defense, and have been for the last 3 years. They play very smart and fundamental defense, regardless of who is on the court.

As they did ours.

UM didn't need the 3 pointer, as they attacked the rim very well.

You're right about the double team strategy and when they tried to kick it out we were there too. They were 3/18 from three and shot 63% from inside the arc and 52% overall and we still won.
