How "They" see "Us"

It's always nice to read from a different perspective, even though it's via Foxnews' Big Sky Preview...

Sports Network predicted order of finish puts the Griz at #3 (we shall see :thumb: )

GRIZ OUTLOOK: This isn't the same team that won a share of the Big Sky title last year and had the top-ranked scoring offense and defense. The March firing of head coach Robin Pflugrad followed player arrests and sexual assault allegations involving Griz players and former players. More problems appear to be coming (including NCAA sanctions), but getting back on the field has helped stabilize the messy offseason in Missoula. Delaney was given a two-year contract to clean up problems and keep the Griz's vaunted program at the top of the Big Sky (they went on to reach the FCS semifinals). It will be hard to stop the Griz running game as the offensivehear line will have its usual tree trunks. They return last year's top four returning ball carriers, including QB Johnson, who combined for 2,351 yards and 23 touchdowns. Johnson, though, faces a felony charge of sexual assault, leaving his season in doubt. Defensively, LB Kanongata'a and FS Tully are the only two true returning starters, but LB Tripp, the team's top defensive player who was hurt last season, is added into the mix. The linebackers unit will be among the best in the FCS. The kicking game is starting over without PK/P Brody McKnight. While the Griz have averaged 10 wins in their 26 straight winning seasons, people outside Missoula think they are vulnerable. The Griz disagree.

The fact we've averaged 10 wins in 26 winning seasons in a row should shut people up. We will disappoint everyone yet again.

Come on, with all of the off-field issues, plus losing our starting QB, how could any reasonable fan expect more than a #3 ranking?

Because we don't have reasonable fans. I wouldn't have it any other way.

This isn't exactly your run of the mill off season. Count up all the cards and see how much the deck is stacked against you. Unprecedented. Ya, you're the griz, right? We'll see how much that saying does for you in 2012. I have some pretty good friends that follow close, have seen practices and the scrimmage. They are very concerned. Mainly saying 2012 is going to be ugly, but 2013 has the potential to be a huge turnaround, especially if you can establish a QB.

I hate to say this, considering who you are, and who you are cheering for, but I think this is a fair assessment. Basically, at the worst, this will be a rehash of 2010, and again we will have a hell of a team in 2013. I think we have a real good shot to go deep this year, but in the coming years, watch the eff out.

Wouldn't a "reasonable fan(atic)" be somewhat of an oxymoron?

There's always How "We" see "Us"... ;)

One In The Book
BY MICK HOLIEN, ON AUGUST 14TH, 2012
If you are one of those folks who believes like I do that even though the majority of a superb defense has moved on, that side of the football has to rein supreme in the early season in order for the Grizzlies to get out of the 2012 proverbial gate, then you had to like Sunday night’s scrimmage.

And if the enthusiasm of newly-installed defensive coordinator Ty Gregorak doesn’t make you percolate just a bit, you’re not yet ready for some Griz football.

One of the potential downfalls of an early scrimmage in a bowl like Washington Grizzly Stadium is there isn’t much you can’t hear both from the players and the coaches.

But credit to Mick Delaney and his troops, there were few audible obscenities and plenty of what I should describe as gentle encouragement as for about an hour this group of close to 100 players took an opportunity to display new-found wares of the first week of practice.

With a corps of running backs returning, there will be no lack of a rushing attack and the pace of the shotgun-oriented offense with hints of QB-read was in evidence.

But the defense, as it must, was flying around and pressure and speed was obvious from a lot of positions.

Like I told his mom, I’m not mentally settled on seeing Jordie Tripp wearing No. 37 but it’s sure nice to see him back out there keying the D after most of the season lost last year to injury.

The hit of the day?

JC transfer corner Jacob Coogan (6-2, 205) lit up tight end redshirt Butte Central freshman Aashan Richards (6-6, 227) on a bone-jarring tackle that dislodged the football.

And what a night to be on the gridiron under the lights in Missoula with the 90-play session starting around 8:30 p.m.

Now it’s begun!

I'm stoked! :thumb:
