How stupid can a coach be?

From "Random Thoughts for a Tuesday Morning," the weekly column by my favorite sportswriter, Lori Gilbert of The Recordin Stockton, CA:

» Dr. Mike Bellotti, coach of the Oregon Ducks, said his quarterback, Dennis Dixon, tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his team's win over Arizona State on Nov. 3 and thought he'd rested it well enough to play in Thursday's game at Arizona. Since when does rest heal a torn ACL?

I wouldn't be surprised if Bellotti cost this promising quarterback his freaking career over this. Dumba$$.

Loren Utterback, the first team all conference linebacker for the griz tore his ACL three games into his senior year in high school. He still rushed for over one thousand yards and was all state defense as well. He braced it, rehabed the quad, and was able to get it repaired after the season and lead the track team to a state championship in the spring.

Did he have an informed medical opinion, or did he just get lucky?

Not to diminish your guy's accomplishments (they go almost to the level of Jack Youngblood), but I'd rather not take the chance of not walking again just to come back too soon. It could be said that Jerry Rice lost a year or two of his career by trying to come back from a knee injury too soon.
