How great was the defense yesterday?

Against that offensive line and Bagley the running back to only give up 69 yards rushing is something we may have never seen from a Griz defense in our lifetime. Giving up 253 yards a game is encroaching on and Ndsu style of defense. Clean up the early first game mistakes and you can take 73 yards off that number. We got the dudes and now we have a dude that knows how to coach dudes. This defensive performance was unlike any other witness in the hallowed halls of WGS in decades.
I guess you missed the ten turnover shutout against SFA? Just to name one.
He obviously wasn't around for the run in 95...

Except for a few missed tackles and the bad angle by Sandry on the late TD, the D was very good. SFU was a better team, IMO, than many here are giving credit. They are rated higher than several BSC teams. They are also, very well coached, and came to play. The RB Bagely is a beast and Jerome #22 is one of the top players in the FCS. Without his efforts (1 and 1/2 TDs, 2 INTS, 2 break ups, shut down corner work, and several great open field tackles) this game is an absolute Griz blowout. The Griz D is fast, talented, deep, and mean. It feels like ST was bad but, #22 had a good deal to do with that. Overall, the next two weeks will be a good barometer.

Technically, that would be "decades" ago.

Defense was good, against an offense they rightfully should have contained. Let's see how things look 3 weeks from now
I thought you defense looked very good........... against what is essentially a DII offense :thumb:

After looking over the box score, defense played really well

SFU's Drives
3 plays negative 2 yards
4 plays 1 yard
3 plays 0 yards
7 plays 37 yards
7 plays 32 yards
6 plays 27 yards Field Goal
6 plays 23 yards Touchdown
3 plays 7 yards Touchdown
5 plays 24 yards
3 plays 4 yards
3 plays 1 yard
5 plays 15 yards
4 plays 17 yards
1 play 73 yards
Total 60 plays 259 yards
take away the one big play, had a total of 186 yards for the whole game

Edit, 14 drives averaged 18.5 yards/drive. This includes the one big play of 73 yards.

Griz had 5 drives of over 70 yards each. Amazing when you are -3 in turnovers, and a couple of special team mistakes can really change the game.

Very good analysis. You just have to convince PR of these truths. He's the resident stat man. Until he confirms, I'm hesitant.....

CV, I know you don't understand football, but didn't you notice that I said several times that the D played fairly well, even tho they gave up between 24 and 17 points to a probably not-so-great team. Do you think 24 points to a lower level FCS team, from a conference with 45 schollies, in Griz stadium is a great performance? Just curious.

How many of those points are you laying at the D's feet? Let's get more specific. You saying the D was good and poor in the same conversation isn't helping.

Actually, I said the D played "fairly well". I've said something similar in other posts. Didn't say they had played poorly.

In the official stats, only 1 score came off of a turnover. It was a fumble on the UM 23. I don't recall the defensive sequence, but I think this is the one where, on 3d down and short, the coverage broke down and the D let a receiver go free in the end zone for an easy TD (coverage had to have been blown). I put most of that TD on the O, although obviously the D didn't hold from the 23, or hold to a FB. 1 kickoff return for TD. While I assume most of the kickoff team is composed of guys from the D, that one is obviously on the ST. After another long kickoff, I think to just inside the 10, the D committed a costly penalty after a great play for a loss. A TD was given up. While most of this one is on the ST, I think the D would have had a good chance of holding to a FG had their been no penalty and given the momentum of the great tackle for loss and SF trying to score going into the NEZ. Edit: Without those 2 critical mistakes, and also the mistake on the long TD pass, I would have felt even better about the D. It remains to be seen how good, or not good, SF and its O are. In any event, it was good showing by the D. I have consistently said that in my posts. We will see how good the D is next week, but NI is going to be a very tough game.

My view of our defense is they can end up being very good before the season is all over with. Figure most of these guys Never Played the Game and never Played Together and all of this with a Brand New Coach and brand new scheme. Factor all this in, tons of upside potential remain for our defense. Two more games and we will have the answer.

I agree, except for the one snarky comment.

Doesn't matter. He said "in the hallowed halls of WGS".

Once again...the only way to measure defenses against each other is on a "per possession" basis.

The Griz offense either scores quickly, or is 3 and out. Griz opponents get 2 games worth of possessions in one game.

"per possession" doesn't give the overall strength of the team, as in, some offenses help their defense...but it does give a true measure of a defense.

In the NBA, they measure defense per 100 possessions....why football doesn't, I don't know.
