HOW FAR CAN WE GO?

It is kind of amazing and frustrating to watch Anderson. Refs seem to have it out for him but he does himself absolutely no favors. Even with the verticality rule he seems to want to extend arms toward the offensive player just enough to get called.

And when not getting called for fouls .....I've not seen a team's big guys get backed down in the post as much since I quit playing in my late 40s and younger bigger guys did it to me! Every single team the Griz play have had a big man who does this to our guys be they Steadman, Anderson, Bannan or Owens. Why can't Griz get a big guy like Idaho or Eastern or Weber or SUU or MSU....or....?

Huge need for the future! Chris Cobb needs to get some platform shoes and quit thinking 6'3" guys are tall!
 
I'm not sure we need a big man to be successful! Give me 12 guys all at 6'6 who can all handle the ball, all hit 60% from distance and play lockdown defense and I guarantee I could win the BSC. As long of course as none of our opponents have 12 6'9" guys who can do the same thing!😊
 
I don't like getting caught on the bottom side of post guys. I prefer the top side front or half front because I'd rather give up a precise lob rather than lose position on rotation. Just a preference really, and throughout the years I have taught my posts if they lost leverage on the post work your ass to get to the other side but if you get caught on the back side, defend with your legs and make them work away from you rather than fight them. Many years, if I have kids who can't stay vertical, I teach them to defend the post with their arms to their side. Mac is just at times a bit too hyper on his movements and it makes him a candidate for cheap fouls.

This team however isn't the best help post defense team Travis has had. They are a step or a half of step slow at times on rotations and get caught over or under rotating in that help position. Owens is the best we have and why he takes so many charges, but he's been called on more to be the primary post defender because of how much foul trouble Mac's had since Steadman left. That was sort of the case last night as Owens spent a lot of the game as Blakney's primary defender.

I still don't think people fear this team as you seem to think, but they have to respect them. This team could beat anyone, but they can lose to anyone too. I guess we just have to see if someone can be the "Mack" tomorrow.

Embarrassment turns into heartbreaker, Weber State basketball falls to Montana in quarterfinals

" . . . gave way to an increasingly embarrassing night for Weber State men's basketball, then developed into a heartbreaker late. But in the end, a slower-than-slow second half put No. 3 Weber State in too large of a hole, and the Wildcats took an 80-75 loss to No. 6 Montana in the Big Sky Conference tournament quarterfinals late Thursday night in Boise, Idaho.

After a 34-34 first half, Montana scored the first bucket of the second frame and led the rest of the way. What doomed WSU in a regular-season loss in Missoula began again Thursday in Idaho Central Arena as the Wildcats could not stay in front of driving Griz players. "It all came down to dribble penetration. We knew that when we played them last time at their place," WSU head coach Randy Rahe said. "We knew the speed of their guards was a little bit of an issue and our whole game plan was to keep them in front of us and guard the ball. When we did that, we had good possessions and when we didn’t, we didn’t. They got to the rim and got to the paint way too much on us."
Montana (15-12) finished with 46 points in the paint. Meanwhile, Weber State (17-6) couldn't figure any way to score. KJ Cunningham hit a 3-pointer to make it 50-45 with 11:15 left and it took more than six minutes to find the next field goal. Montana guard Josh Vazquez followed a Robbie Beasley 3-pointer with a bucket of his own and it was 65-49 with 6:04 left. Somehow, Weber State found new life. Isiah Brown finally broke the Wildcats' field-goal drought with a jumper. Using a 1-3-1 trap and then extending it to a full-court press, Dillon Jones scored consecutive buckets, plus a free throw, to cut WSU's deficit to 69-59. . . .

The Griz are the biggest enigma in the Sky this season. Every opposing coach understands the athleticism and talent of these young Griz ballers. I think every opposing coach also knows that the Griz are the team in the Sky that has the talent to beat them on any given night. Yes, they don't always show-up to live-up to their talent level. Much of that has been due to their youth and inexperience. But, they now have an entire season of playing together, and it has begun to show in their vast improvement on the court. For much of the season, so many of these kids did not shoot the ball with confidence, as I observed in an earlier post. You could see their fear and lack of confidence in taking the shot, which led to many open threes not being taken, passing when they should have been shooting, etc. Lately, they seem to be shooting with a great attitude in thinking they will make that shot, and any BB player knows that confidence in making the shot when shooting is critical.
