How does the Big Sky become a premiere FCS Conference?

"beating the Bobcats is now a signature win"

Surely you jest.

That is a lifetime of signature wins :thumb:

Take what I'm saying from a different perspective guys. Over the past two years? Don't really know what is so signature about beating us. Basing my opinion off of how coaches and teams react after beating us the past few years saying stuff like "They are a tough team to beat" and "That was a huge win for our program." But if you think about it, who have been the best teams in this conference consistently over the past 10 years? EWU, UM, and MSU with the next being NAU. Southern Utah and Cal Poly are new to the conference but have already showed success and Portland State is coming off a great season with a new sense of direction for their program.

From a financial standpoint, this conference could use some help with attendance from the lower tier programs but I don't see that changing anytime soon. MSU and UM carry the conference in that regard. I also wouldn't put the "NDSU to the Big Sky" to bed quite yet along with the two South Dakota schools. Those conversations are still alive and well and I wouldn't be shocked at a new conference alignment in the next 10 years.

Vim....you are trying to dream the state college athletic program into a success which it has never been. Look at the football record against UM.

Has there been updates on who the new Big Sky Commish will be? Hopefully someone to start nipping at the heels of the MWC?

Ron Ash and his recruit retention rates over his 9 years. It was around 50% (players who signed on signing day actually finishing their careers as Bobcats).
50%?!? Holy shit. I mean, I knew he was the shittiest coach in the history of football, but that still seems surprisingly high to me. You'd think more kids could endure spineless stupidity and constant losing for that great education we're always hearing about. I guess it explains the "commitment" speech but not the the "signature win" bullshit

Get serious; the Messiah himself would not have a chance.

Misunderstood what I was trying to say Spanky. I'm very aware of the head-to-head record. Not once in my post did I say the history of the MSU program was close to UM's in terms of wins. UM brought the conference to new heights in the 90's and 2000's. If I have to say this even clearer, UM is the best team in the history of this conference if we are talking about wins and success...and it really isn't close.

I was simply trying to say that the three teams with the most wins in the conference over the past 10 years have been EWU, UM, and MSU with the next being NAU. To get the thread back to the topic, erase the hatred you have for MSU for two seconds and have a discussion on the conference as a whole. It isn't that hard....well maybe if you are garrizlies.

Who can say "yes" the best.

Sorry Glacier....few people on a national basis could care less about a premier FCS Conference.

Having a premier FCS school is about like taking the hottest chick in school to the Scobey prom....ya great you went with the hottest chick but nobody cares cuz shes your cousin!

Vim....hate is a little strong. Dislike is correct. If you want to build a case the Bobcats are the 3rd best football program in the Big Sky, enjoy.

I Can't see NDSU going west unless it would be to play in the MWC. NDSU recruits MN, WI, IL, IA, SD, KS, NE, MO . . . why would you play in the west outside your territory, it would hurt recruiting.** Before the MVFC came along it seemed like a good idea to goto Big Sky . . . not any longer. Basketball tournament in Sioux Falls is also a big factor now.

** see ND playing outside primary recruiting area.

If there are conversations, it's most likely Fullerton talking to himself or anyone that will listen, but not NDSU conversations.

Have the Griz made the conference better or is the rest of the conference catching up to the Griz?

Going with the latter on this one. Griz (or any single program) dominance hurts the conference in the long term. Other programs don't have an opportunity to capitalize on a successful season and build their fanbase. EWU did a good job of that over the last five or six years, and now the best thing for the conference is for EWU/Griz to come back down to earth and allow a program like PSU to see a few championships.

How do we correct this? Do we mimic the NFL and the first four games are the best teams playing each other and the weak teams playing each other, which allows any team possible contention for the first four weeks? This might drive a fan base to get behind a team? Would people be opposed of the Griz playing the Cats earlier in the year?

Yes. Trail of tears..... Just isn't the same without snow.

1. Relocate HQ to Montana, where the two most important teams are located (regardless of what you think of MSU, this is true).

2. Hire a commissioner with the vision of putting stricter guidelines on membership that is less centered on geography and more centered on athletic and academic standing.

The BSC really screwed up by not jumping on the opportunity of adding the Dakota schools several years ago. Those are programs that are state flagship schools, have higher academic standards, and that draw much higher attendance than the regional lower-tier schools that we have in the conference.

Leadership sitting in an office in Ogden probably looked at the Dakota schools and thought that it would be too much cost and not the right geographic fit for the conference. They then probably saw the proximity of Northern Colorado and Southern Utah in relation to Weber, NAU, and the California schools. Since, the whole Dakota falling out of geographic territory has been shot with the adding of UND and now we have 3 very very good FCS programs that have long moved on to what has become a better conference.

The biggest fight against the NDSU/SDSU membership bid came from the presidents of SacSt, PSU and EWU, none of which were charter members. The former two were part of Fullerton's theory that we needed teams from large metropolitan centers. So he was intimately involved and of course then continued his dumb crusade by adding UNC after snubbing the Dakotas. While there may have been a geographic argument, it went out the window with the addition of UND and CPSLO, 2000 miles apart. His "leadership" set the conference back 15 years.
