How Do Student Athletes Feel I Wonder About the "Opt in House Settlement " ?

This could be a dead horse issue, but if Montana needed to add another sport hockey would be one to at least consider. There is already a rabid hockey community in Missoula, that ranges from kids to adults, and the rink facilities at the county fairgrounds might be usable for the Griz (at least in the beginning).
Man would that be the dream.

A new College athletics NIL Bill was officially introduced in the US House yesterday. This tweet I found interesting as one section of the bill mandates schools to offer 16 sports which would be good news for Olympic sports and I love that they put a protection for these sports in the bill. Currently UM only offers 15 sports, so if this bill passes then we would need to add a sport (I vote for Men's Golf).
Where will the money come from in the many revenue challenged AD's? Some schools may have to just pull the plug on the whole works.

Umm I mean that’s the whole point of this bill. Ring in all this excess NIL money so you can still save other sports and the AD as a whole.

When 95% of it is going to football and men's hoops with crumbs to women's hoop some places? You seriously think a bunch of new money will arrive to fund swimming and diving at the collegiate level? I'm just going by what I read that the richest AD's have announced they will spend their allotted payroll dollars on. In Montana's case there will be no money outside the relatively meager amounts of "old" NIL money and the miniscule media bux so I don't see any "excess" to save anything.

Hockey would be amazing.

Baseball would be next best.

But we'll probably end up with men's golf
Don't disagree but am curious what would you add in women's sports to equalize scholarships? Closest women's hockey is probably Denver and Colorado College. Swimming is an option, I suppose, or gymnastics. And how do you fund another 50 scholarships?

Not sure why I need to have the answers to these questions. Isn't this why we pay the AD the big bucks?

To me, the easiest answer long term would be wrestling, men's and women's. The Griz could manage to be at the forefront of the still rising women's wrestling scene, and wrestling is a very cheap sport to have on campus.

Baseball or golf would be great, we have history with both at UM. Hockey not so much.
But hasn't the club hockey team at UM had recent success and a great deal of local fan support? Seems like a great option to engage the community and have some on-ice success as a cherry on top...

I would love to see that, and the other one that has been knocked around repeatedly is bringing wrestling back. I don't know though, the way the University has turned, I would not be surprised if we get flag football before they add another men's sport. With the additions and subtractions, it seems like they are so worried about title 9 and needing to comply with keeping the same number of scholarships or more for women that they don't want to do anything that adds another men's sport. Hockey would be something I would go watch, and I could see it becoming another revenue producer.

Hey now. As a former high school golfer, I'd be stoked if UM added a Men's Golf team. Yes Hockey and Baseball would both be very cool but I would not be one bit upset if they added Golf. I may actually help support the program.

I've said this before that if UM had to add another Women's sport, the most logical sport is Beach Volleyball. Hear me out. Most BV players also play regular Volleyball and a BV roster is much smaller than a regular Volleyball roster. You could specially recruit BV players who would also play on the regular Volleyball team, but their scholarships would be for BV and then they wouldn't be considered walk ons for regular Volleyball. Plus all you have to do for facilities is go lay some sand out on South campus, and maybe build a warehouse style indoor practice facility for them and problem solved.

If Boise State can do it, we can do it.

My thing with baseball is very apparent with softball. How much money is it costing to play a 50 game season with only 11 home games? 8-42 is a long way from having a contender for a conference championship. How many Montana athletes? Two?
I love baseball, but it has only just started up in some high schools in Montana, for what, a 15 game schedule? This is way back, but the guys I knew going through American Legion were either signing a deal to join a rookie league team or looking forward to college out of state. This isn't going to change if we add baseball, those kids that are college level talent are going out of state in a vast majority of cases. So, what do you do, recruit in Asia to expose and untapped market for college sports? It might work until UCLA and Oregon State start in, but it won't be popular with the locals.

Legion ball in Montana has gotten significantly better in recent years and now with the advent of HS ball recruiting opportunity for local (Montana) kids would be such that I believe a baseball option would be feasible (at least from a recruiting perspective)... especially now that the HS programs are accommodating the legion schedules ...

This is a fabulous idea.

Women’s wrestling is exploding at the high school level across the country. Makes sense for title IX and adding another sport. Less equipment overhead and favorable travel to tournaments versus a 50 game sport. Great niche in the west.

I take back my slight insult. I do find myself watching the majors occasionally. I don't think I'll ever watch a big sky men's golf game on ESPN+ but who knows?

Men's golf would likely be very easy for Montana to add. They already have the facilities, and they wouldn't need to find an affiliate conference. It would just be whether they can fund it and meet title IX...

I've been out of the loop on this for a long time, so I am not at all able to talk on it now, but I take your word for better opportunities. It seems like there are a lot of smaller schools with high school teams that could only play Legion ball if they went to one of the cities that had a team.
Speaking from all the way back when I was 18, we had decent support from school, including a sponsored absence to let us play in Great Falls at an early season tournament that was rained out and so there was no need to be out of school. I don't remember the exact number of games we played, but it was over 60 with a long trip to Idaho for about 10 days.
Field turf helps too I'm sure, no more running in mud bogs, but you I'm bet hitting in April is still painful on the hands. There's nothing that compares to feeling like you reached into a yellowjacket nest to encourage solid contact!
