Britney Lohman's a great player and athlete, epsecialy on the defensive end of the court. (On a side note, she's also one of my good friends. Even Bobcats and Grizzlies can get along once in a while.) It really just surprises me that she got 5 fouls in 8 minutes of play. When I saw the recap in the Bozeman Daily Comical, I thought it was another one of their typos. So when I read e-griz, I was amazed to see that you can really get 4 fouls in 5 minutes. But I guess if you have 5 fouls to give, you might as well use 'em. What's even more amazing is that she got 5 fouls out of a team total of 9. I think physical play is very important in basketball. MSU's women's team is floundering because only 1 or 2 players is ever physical. Lohman is going to be a great asset to the Lady Griz program.

UM is always glad to get a great player! Bozeman High has put out a lot of them in recent years. Keep em coming!

After watching the Lady Griz play Long Beach, which is a damned fine team, I was impressed that the Lady Cats had been within 4 points late in the game. I thought Long Beach had the talent to blow us out of the gym given that we have such a young team.

So, what's with the Lady Cats? They can play that well against Long Beach although they lost by 17 (I think), why aren't they doing better against other teams? I worry that if things don't improve soon, the young coaches and young team will get discouraged. Do you see signs of improvement?

The Lady Griz are lucky to have to solid seniors in Katie Edwards and Jody McLeod. The young kids are blending in well in large part because Mandy Morales plays like a senior and Conway had matured into a fine player as a sophomore. The Lewistown girl (Sonja Rogers) has a lot of poise for a freshman. Plus nobody has to learn a whole new system like the Lady Cats do. Your thoughts?

Yes I have watched the Bobcat women play, but I didn't see the Long Beach State game. I've seen some improvements, but still they're struggling. Scotta Morton kept the Cats in the game with her hot 3-point shooting that night, but besides for that, the outside game isn't there. Neither is the inside game. It seems like the best scoring threat is on some wild shot at the hoop. If that doesn't go, the shots don't fall. The defense needs work and there is just a flat out lack of physicality.

However, they've shown some improvement. They played a lot better at the end against Air Force and played good defense. There are only 10 players playing right now and I imagine a lot of the girls are getting discouraged. Lack of seniors can also be seen very easily. I think there's a lot of talent and athleticism on that team. Amanda DeHaan will be a very good player for us, Alyssa Nelson is a great point guard, and I think Erin Goodman would be a very good player if she got some more playing time. The thing that hasn't happened yet is a complete game. Once that happens, they'll do a lot better. They won't go winless and sooner or later, they'll pick up a win. I just hope they can be competitive when playing the Griz this year.

I didn't get to see the game and was kind of wondering about the comments of the original poster. I have seen many games with a lop sided number of fouls that were very well officiated. On the other hand, I have seen games with nearly identical numbers of fouls called that were horribly officiated. I have seen officals try and "even up" the number to make it look good. That is ridiculous but happens. To say it was a "homer job" based on a number is pretty short sighted and typical of some who don't understand the game.

I called a friend of mine who was a coach in Missoula and won some State Titles because i knew he would be at the game. I asked him and he laughed. He said "anyone who knows anything about basketball and officiating would never say it was a homer job". He described the game pretty much like a couple other psoters in here did. That told me pretty much what I needed to know. :twocents:

good post. too often people judge the ref's performance by looking at the boxscore and counting fouls. obviosly because the original poster wasn't at the game, this is what he did and assumed that the officiating was terrible. in his defense, i think that we all do it. i think that if the cats played the griz in bozeman this year, and we went to the line 40 times to your nine, there would be a riot over here. and vice versa if the game was played in missoula. so while i can only assume that the poster didn't know what his facts were, i don't blame him too much 'cause i think many would have done the same.

I do believe that "homers" happen sometimes but just looking at the stats doesn't tell you the whole story. Its like looking at a football score that's for example 14-0 and assuming the team that didn't score didn't show up. I didn't think the refs were biased in this case but there were a few calls that could have gone either way but happened to go in the LG's favor. Sometimes it is the other way, even at home.

Never, ever in my years of following college hoops have I seen such a one sided margin from the free throw line as was the case last night in Missoula.

The next time UM calls up the Broncos and invites them to Missoula, I would tell them where to stick it. In a close game like last nights game was, the margin is NEVER that one-sided. Homer job...but nice win Montana.
