Look again. He was about 4 yards down field when the ball was released. He went out to block the middle backer, who hesitated and then turned and released down field.
Hyperbole with the 9 yard comment. He was over 4 yards and moving. So you're saying in pass protection, he's supposed to be advancing and engaging with the middle linebacker? Interesting take on pass blocking you have. :thumb:

I didn't say anything about what he was supposed to do, but if he had been blocking the backer, it wouldn't have been a penalty. Interesting that you don't read very well.
Isn't still a penalty if they don't engage the defender within 2 yards of the line of scrimmage? If it's not illegal man downfield than it's OPI.

yes yes, it is. From the angle I had, in the stadium it looked like he had engaged but you can see on TV the backer backed away and he pursued. A mental error for sure.

3 yards is the rule of thumb.

No, it's 3 yards. See the article I posted earlier.

I stand corrected. Still, he was at least close to 4 just over 3 when the ball was thrown then he started to move down the field to block. Can the lineman release the moment the ball is in the air? So it was close. Just weird all around

Yes, agreed. I think he was 4, not 3. Yes, lineman can release as the ball is released. We are in agreement. If it had been 3 or closer to 3, then I'd be griping. At 4, or 4 plus, no griping here.

I think he released to make it look like it was a run...it was play action and maybe the ball was supposed to be out earlier? Makes sense with Sprunk releasing to draw eyes from middle linebacker and hit JLM with a quick hitter in behind?
