High School B-ball

Next weekend the Class C girls tournament is in Hamilton and I strongly suggest that anybody around Missoula go check it out. I think the favorite is Reed Point-Rapelje-Ryegate. They are or should be the champions of the South. The next three teams should come from the north as they are very solid basketball teams. The Big Sandy Lady Pioneers are the champions of the Northern C which is typically the strongest division. I broadcast the Divisional tournament in Great Falls last weekend and Big Sandy won in the semis over Chester-J-I in overtime and beat Highwood after Highwood couldn't tie up the game from inside the key on the last possession. Big Sandy is coached by Roy Lackner and has led his ladies to the state tournament over 20 times so they have the experience edge. They could face R-R-R in the semis as they are on the same side of the bracket. The other two north teams are Highwood and C-J-I and they will play at 11:00 AM on Thursday morning with the winner playing the 1st seed from the west at 8:00 at night. These two teams get up and down the floor really well and the opening game should be a great one. C-J-I has been to the state tournament quite a bit at least the Chester girls have been. As for Highwood they are making their 1st trip to a state tournament and are an extremely solid basketball team. As far as I see it, it should be R-R-R and the three teams from the north battling it out for the hardware. Again I strongly suggest that anyone in the area drive out to Hamilton next weekend and watch some good girls basketball it should be fun.

Well, the 13 points Helena had through 3 quarters may have had something to do with the Braves not pushing or pressing much.

The Braves put a very nice press on Lake City in game 1 and outscored them 28-13 in the 4th quarter; they are very athletic for a tall team and good athletes make for a good pressing team.

I think this Flathead squad has to be considered a contender at this point.

No offense to J. DeHerrera, but if they had a TRUE point guard, I'd make them the favorite to take home the hardware.

I didn't travel to the game; is Helena High really that bad?

Helena high is very inexperienced and at times has three, four sophomores on the court. They will struggle all year, just don't have enough good players at this point in their career to compete night in night out. I think Kalispell is good, but I don't feel like they can compete with the top two or three teams on a consistent basis. Their guard play is pretty inconsistent and I'm not sure they are real deep without a decent drop off in play. Much better than I thought they would be though.

I've now been able to watch three Helena High games and this is easily the worst they've been in atleast twenty years. Having a winless season is a possibility this year. They only have seven more home games, and they won't win outside of Helena because they haven't done that since the State tourney in 04
I called it! I'm not proud of it, but I made a bold, and somewhat easy prediction that HHS would be winless. Since I'm on a roll, I predict that UM will make to the Sweet Sixteen this year.
I'll check in later to update my predictions if I stay hot like this.
