High profile H.S. point guard commits to Griz

As noted in another thread (but I figured this is big enough to merit its own thread), high profile prep guard Michael Oguine (Los Angeles area H. S., West Hills, CA point guard) made a verbal commitment to play basketball for the Montana Grizzlies.

Oguine, a high school senior who has been rated as a high mid-major point guard, and has been rated at between 2.5 and 3 stars (out of 5) by most recruiting organizations, led his Chaminade H. S. team to the state championship last spring.

Here's the story in today's Los Angeles Times: http://www.latimes.com/sports/highschool/varsity-times/la-sp-vi-boys-basketball-michael-oguine-commits-to-montana-20140918-story.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Josh Gerson, recruiting analyst for Scout.com wrote this in making the announcement: "Michael Oguine is one of biggest steals out west in 2015. Athletic guard can play on and off the ball. Projects as all-league in Big Sky."

Here's a brief story from earlier in the year from the LA Times:

And here's a photo essay of that championship game from the L.A. Daily news:

Hearty congratulations to Michael for choosing to play as a Griz!

Hearty congratulations as well to Montana coach Travis DeCuire for securing this young man as a major hoops recruit!

Nice work coaches!

Don't hate me, but why Montana for basketball if he is #25 pg ? Relatives? Skiing? Girlfriend?

I am sure Will Cherry and Dunn making an impact here certainly helps. Our new coach, Travis DeCuire, is a former GRIZ PG, he will likely make our guards better in creating. So far Travis has been a very aggressive recruiter. He is not afraid to compete with bigger schools for talent. Can't get a commitment or even an answer without asking for one. :thumb:

In the West, I can think of few places I'd like to attend for my college years. Montana is right up there.UM is a good school, with traditions, beautiful locale, and great coach. Chaminade is a premium Catholic school with a small enrollment that puts out some pretty well educated kids who seek quality schools. I am surprised Santa Clara or one of the Jesuit schools didn't get this kid. I watched them play twice last year. He is a good one...Montana basketball is getting to be exciting and it is growing on the strength of the recent past.....

Little blurb from rivals.

Stanback's 2015 point guard teammate Michael Oguine flashed athleticism that could land him on the Pac-12 radar. For now, the 6-foot-1 PG is mostly hearing from Brown, Harvard, Northern Arizona, Pennsylvania and Santa Clara.

this is a major coup for our program, coming on the heels of another major coup: landing travis decuire as our head coach. this is just the first dividend. (i don't count jared samuelson; he was a legacy guy, and cheech and chong should have been able to recruit him.) notice in his tweet, oguine said he'd committed to play for travis decuire, almost as if the school were secondary in importance. you can believe that more recruits will feel the same way.

i see two significant off-season stories in the big sky. first, the emergence of sac state as a real power, thanks to a bona fide center (eric stuteville), a stellar backcourt recruit (jiday ugbaja out of san francisco) and a rising-star coach, brian katz. this is a program in ascendance.

but the second is the recruiting efforts quietly taking place at montana and weber state. both schools have had a lot of recent success, with great young coaches and high-profile talent energizing their programs. weber is after several three and even four-star recruits, and has been hoping to leverage the damien lillard legacy to their advantage. montana too has upped its recruiting profile, and if you include tres before he committed to his dad, we too have been going after three and four-star recruits. but so far, we are the first school to nab a three-star recruit. with decuire at montana, it will be fun to watch the recruiting battles between the two schools.

questions: are we still after paris austin (another point guard) or has he committed somewhere else?...with andy martin gone, does this mean we have two more schollies available?

Thanks for the mention citay but I think our returning guards are the strength of this team. Dylan Garrity and Mihk McKinney ( POY candidate in the BSC), both seniors will make this team tough to contend with. You got a good one in Oguine. Having seen both Oguine and Dunn in high school, I really think Oguine is the better of the two. (tell him to take it easy on us)

We should have 4 scholarships to offer for the 2015 class. Gregory, Weisner, and Kemp are graduating. Andy Martin's scholarship will become available as well. I'd like to see the talent of Paris Austin here. Why would we need another PG though? I am hoping the other 2 scholarships go to a combo 2/3, 3/4, or 4/5. I'll be happy with 1 scholarship to a solid rebounding big. We really need post depth.

We will only have 1 scholarship for 2016. 2017 we have 5 scholarships. 2018= 3 or 4 (depending on scholarships and if walk on earn scholarships). It looks to me the 2015 and 2017 classes will be "critical" years for recruiting. I am really looking forward to see what DeCuire can do with 5 scholarships available for 1 recruiting year. Could he do a Big Sky version of the Fab 5 ? To me, that would be 5 top 300 players in 1 class.

Amazing how well recruiting is going for basketball and football so far this year.

Unless a "can't pass up" recruit is there, I would not be surprised to see Travis save Martin's scholarship so he would have 2 to give next year.

Or decrease 2017 from 5 to free up scholarships for 2016.....

Congratulations on your choice, Micheal! Welcome to GRIZ NATION!!!!!

Prepare to win Championships!!

And another GREAT get by this staff. Congrats to them as well! :thumb:

I disagree with that strategy, if there's a quality recruit that wants to play here then we should take them. Scholarships free up all the time so it's likely that a 2nd ride will open up by 2016 anyways, no need to "save" one.

You say "quality recruit", I say "can't pass up". Essentially we are in agreement.
