Ferris is a top twenty-five FCS team masquerading as a D2 School. And yes, they do only have 35 football scholarships, but in Michigan the state subsidizes Pell Grants and other forms of aid to a pretty wide swath of college kids at schools, including athletes at Ferris. So it's unlikely they have any number of kid who are paying their own way.
Sam has decided, like many on the board during the runup to this game, that D2 is D2 for a reason. That there is a clear delination between them and D3, or the FCS. That they were inferior talent. I think he should know better than this, but it seems like he doesn't. I've said it in other spots, there were four guys on the defensive line for Ferris who could have started for any FCS team in the country. Oladipo is a draft pick in 2024. This is the best group they will face all year, better than any FCS team they play, by a lot. Their offensive line was likely as good as any they will see as well, including bozeman. The best teams have good fronts, thus their success over the years.
I think the best thing that could have happened to them this non-con season is for them to have played a team of the caliber of Ferris. I think they understand where the problems are, what needs to be fixed, accentuated, and leaned on harder. I could care less what their poll rating is in September. The only ones that matter occur in November. So I'll wait to see what it looks like then.
