This was an extremely stupid thing that he did. The spotlight these players are under is constant and intense, and it is beyond my understanding how someone makes such a poor judgement. I assume that youth + booze is the correct equation in this instance. He should be punished in accordance with the UM athletic department policies - nothing more, nothing less.

And Mick should run his ass until he pukes for being so stupid and to send a message to his teammates.

Royce is probably busy trying to figure out what excuse to give the Regents about enrollment declines the next time they meet with him.

The athletic code is written so poorly that it isn't completely clear whether it's a category II or category III violation. I believe category III. A first time category III violation doesn't result in an automatic suspension for a particular percentage of the games. A first time category II violation does (10% of games). There is flexibility for providing more punishment/suspension. And the coach can provide further punishment. I don't think the outstanding speeding ticket impacts the analysis, as I don't think it's a violation, but perhaps it does have an impact. Reading Haslam's quote indicates the committee might not do too much, but the coach might do more. I assume at least a game suspension, plus the other smaller punishments, will be forthcoming. This all asssumes that there aren't worse or better facts involving the incident. Hermanson and others volunteered at Paxson school last year. He was one of the stars in a readers theater put on by the players for the kids. He recently said they planned to continue in the coming off-season. This incident may cement that deal.
 
He made the paper with his poor decison. He needs to sit a game or two. Period. If he wants to act like an idiot & doesn't want to worry about making the paper he should go play D-II or NAIA football.

Will never happen. Unrealistic. Such a rule would not be followed. It's not even followed at BYU. Would have an horrible impact on recruiting. I don't think it's a matter of not caring. I think it's more that they just don't think or assume they won't be caught. Some of more careful than others.

Have you ever broken, bent or taken a sign?
 
2 game suspension. Move on. Although, if anything happens again, give him the boot. Fairly minor infraction.

Has anyone seen the signs? Destruction?

Simmer down everyone. Anything a UM Football Players does thats against the grain will make the papers. Matt probably woke up and uttered those horrible words "I am never gonna drink again." I know I have. He is probably as embarrassed as a kid can be and I'm sure his teammates aren't real happy, The thing about this kinda thing is don"t let it steal the momentum we currently have. I'm pretty sure Mick will deal with this accordingly and we won"t miss a beat in Flagstaff. :coffee:
 
I currently have a speeding ticket in Minnesota that I didn't pay from when we rode our motorcycles to the Iowa game in 2006. If the HP wouldn't have been such a dickhead I would have paid it.

The team rule is they can be in bars and drink until 10:00 pm during the season. Seems fairly liberal to me but that is the rule.
 
We can be thankful he didn't punch a plywood backed sign or he might of badly injured his hand on top of it...........................

The rule of no alcohol doesn't have to be imposed until there is a first violation by one member of team who breaks the law and alcohol is a factor. Once the rule is violated, then it becomes a team issue instead of just individual issue...Being part of a team is a privledge, not a right...one thing I learned by being in the military is, if one team member fails, the whole team fails! I see this instance as exactly this!

So what if football is a privilege not a right? That cliche has little or nothing to do the current situation, in my view. It means only that, legally, schools can create and impose a set of conduct rules. It doesn't mean schools have to do that. It doesn't dictate what the rules should be. I don't disagree with you on some of what you said about team concept.

There are certain rules about alcohol in the military and at the academies. There was a general US policy against drinking alcohol in Iraq. Please don't tell me that alcohol rules in the military are never broken.
 
Taking or vandalizing signs is DUMB.

Obsessing over how some kid will get punished over such a stupid small event is also DUMB.

This is a one off. If Hermason has a history of vandalism etc that's on thing. A drunken sign attack is not a sign of a deeply flawed individual however, and hes not going to repeat such a stupid action IMO.

I remember having a few keggers at my house were I would end the night with a few extra street signs for some reason.... and sometimes a tombstone or two (Blank) ...

Point is there is no real issue here. If the kid does more stupid things then it will be dealt with. Sitting around being all self righteous is just like the pricks who couldn't wait for the witch hunt to begin last year. You know who you are and you are all spineless douchebags.

Rules are rules...most are made to be broken, cliche. If/when a military team member breaks the rule (s) they pay a very heavy price as does the entire team. Yes, I am comparing apples to grapefruit here, one is about saving lives and the other is about playing a game. However, seems to me that everytime a Griz player has been in trouble in the last 5 years it is blamed on alcohol. I don't have the answer for the issue, and I know kids will be kids, but when if ever will it stop? How can you minimize this problem? That is all I am sayin.
 
I sincerely hope that whatever "punishment" is meted out to Hermanson, that it includes a requirement that he stand up in front of his teammates and apologize for his conduct and acknowledge that he let the team down.

Absolutely.

Here is where senior leadership needs to take over. I would hope that Mr. Tripp has had a nice little chat with Hermy.

I hope Herms enjoys the view of the next 3 games up with the red shirts, and I hope those bud lights were well worth it.
