Herder's most recent column ranks all 24 teams' chances of getting to Frisco. While probably fairly accurate, he manages in a few paragraphs to drool all over undsu as well as somehow justify his god-awful take on the GRIZ a month ago. Impressive.

I keep seeing references to two years ago when our rivals suffered a beatdown in our game, only then to make a run through the playoffs to the chipper. One glaring difference between then and now is that then, their QB went to the portal right after our game, and Tommy Mellott emerged as a new talent. There wasn't much film on him. Saturday the Griz laid out a game plan of how to stop him, which I am sure others will follow. We'll see.

game planning to stop him, and having the speed at linebacker and a disruptor up front, along with cover guys you can leave on island are two very different things.

Yeah oddly enough. The QB system which at one point everyone in the country was terrified of now seems to be their glaring hole. Tough to win at this level when you can’t throw at all. Not going to be able to Jump Ball Fade your way to Frisco this year.

Another key to the Cats national championship run in 2021 - they landed the 8 seed and were gifted arguably one of the easiest paths to Frisco (thanks to the committee for messing up the seedings that year). The Cats had a second-round game at home vs UT Martin (their first playoff appearance ever), then a road game in the quarters against faux #1 Sam Houston State (who just about everyone agreed shouldn't have even been a top 4 seed with their poor SoS), and then as a result of "upsetting" the #1 seed, the Cats were blessed with a semi-final home game against an unseeded South Dakota State team who had been on the road throughout the playoffs (vs UC Davis, @ Sacramento State, @ Villanova, @ Montana State) and ran out of gas. Add to the mix a new quarterback that nobody knew at the time how to stop, you've got the recipe for a championship run.

And recall then they had an NFL caliber WR they could toss up those wounded ducks to. This year? Uhh...no

Part of what helped stop him though was our speed at linebacker and safety. Not every team they face will have that. Does NDSU? I’m not sure, but I do think that’s almost a must have in order to stop mellot. If you don’t have the backers that can beat him to the edge when they run that outside zone read they’ll gash the s**t out of you, just like they did us last year

Yep. I mentioned this a couple days ago. Their pass strategy hasn’t changed. Throw up a bunch of 50/50 balls and let the WR’s go get them. Unfortunately they don’ have a McCutcheon on their roster this year…that’s how you go 4-16 in passing and become one-dimensional.

Cats sytem is able to straight slaughter lower to mid level teams but they won't ever beat good defenses consistently without any balance...

Oh man, all this. I recall thinking how completely lucky they got w their draw. Unreal.
