Hellgate Basketball

I'll eat some crow about saying that Cox and McGillis would tear apart Choquette and Hildreth. Cox and Choquette both had 11 and Hildreth out did McGillis 11-7. My best bet is that Jack was in foul trouble and didn't play much since it was in Butte. Anything news about that, monthoops?? I know your a strong McGillis follower. That said, 19 free throws for Butte and 2 for Hellgate? R U KIDDING?? Just a little anecdote. Earlier this season in Butte when Butte was playing Missoula Big Sky, Butte's official score keeper leans over to the Big Sky manager right before tip and says "Oh good, whenever we have these guys (refs), we're undefeated!!" If something doesn't seem wrong with that, I dunno what to say. I think Butte is a solid team and very well coached and are good enough to pick up some road wins too, but the home court advantage in Butte is UNBELIEVABLE. Maybe just a personal opinion.

kinda like big sky conference refs...lol
it is good to see my hometown dogs finally win a couple games - my senior year we won 4 total.

also i belive he went 3-11 shooting - i didnt play basketball but aparently when one goes 3-11 from the floor they are generally having a bad shooting night. Why isnt anyone menching Jeff Edwards? I watched Butte Play Helena Capital a month ago and he ended up with 8 blocks and some really bad misses from about 5 foot in

Watching the playoff matches unfold, I found it interesting that having lost to Hellgate, Capital must now face a possible playoff game with Missoula Big Sky at their place. De Ja Vu? For high school basketball followers out there its been 3 years in a row that Big Sky has eliminated Capital in their place and I can't imagine the atmosphere there if this matchup were to repeat itself.

has anyone checked out the Hellgate JV team? They might have a better prospect than anyone mentioned in this entire thread-Taylor Nordby. Probably the best athlete in the entire state. He'd be starting for 90% of Montana high-school varsity teams as a frosh. He is a legit 3-4 sport D-1 Athlete-basketball, baseball, track and maybe football. He is by far the best baseball player in the state by a mile for his age and should be his #1 sport if he is smart-he dominates like Barry Bonds in baseball. Nobody could believe he was legitimate age. He won the 8th grade state track meet last year. Unfortunately Basketball is his #1 love, I think, and I fear he will waste his talents there.

I'd like to hear if anyone has seen him or knows his potential for hoops. He is 6'4? as a frosh, so who knows how tall he might get. I know he can dunk like mad, and his 3-on-3 hoop team took, like 3rd in Spokane in a huge tourney last year.

Nordby is a man child for his age, but he isn't a d-1 athlete in one sport at this point, let alone three. I'll bet he grows maybe 2 inches more at max and won't be a legite prospect in basketball. If he'd start varsity for 90% of the teams in the state, y did he just get moved up to JV?? He doesn't even dress varsity. He isn't the best player in his grade in the city, let alone the entire state. Andy Garland is a more developed player. As far as baseball, he can mash, but thats in Junior's not even seniors or mavs against anyone of equal size or strength. How old is he, like 15. Conor Dwyer who pitches for the Missoula Mavericks is 15 or 16 and is FAR superior to Nordby as a baseball player because hes proved himself against worth competion. 6'4 and you can hit a home run off of a 5'4 kid throwing 55 miles per hour over a 300 foot fence??? Pleaz. Dwyer gets PT on AA at 1B and he can throw upwards of 85 or 86 mph as a 15 year old sophomore. So now what was the third sport? Oh yeah football. Even you, Zirg, said that "maybe football". Ive never seen him play that, but if u question his ability even with your great love for Nordby, then he must not be that good. I know hes a good athlete, but we'll see in a couple of years if he is legit or just a man child.

I agree on the subject of Nordby in baseball. How can you judge a kid's talent in baseball if he only played juniors? If you are really a prospect for baseball you would at least be playing A at that level if not AA like Conor Dwyer. As for football I am uninformed about his talents and I am not sure to take your word for it so we shall see.

stop the "potential D-1 star" talk until Nordby at least dresses out for a varsity game. i've seen him play and he can't dunk. he is way to uncoordinated to play varstiy at this point. garland is much more polished and a better player.

Well thanks for your comments. Ok, 2-sport D-1 prospect-baseball and track. I am relieved to hear he is not so hot at basketball actually. I heard that is his best sport, at least his fave. I know he can dunk though, and would love to take any action against that statement. Nordby played Little League "Seniors" last year (during the regular season) above his age-level actually, instead of juniors like he was suppose to. He may indeed play for the Mavs still this coming year or back to Seniors if they won't let him play hoops in the summer, and we'll see if he can play against the big-boys. Dwyer played for the Mavs at 14 or 15? Nordby is only 15 this year, so he is on the same track as Dwyer. He throws 86 mph already (as a 14 year old), but can't pitch accurately. I have NO DOUBT he'd make the Mavs A-team at least, this year.

I agree much of his success is due to early physical development, but boy is he developed. He can flat-out fly too for a big body.

I am still confident any non AA school could use a 6'4" great athlete in their BB line-up, but I guess that is debateable.

He's not 6'4, hes 6'2. I have the hellgate program in front of me and Nordby is listed at 6'2 on oh yeah the sophomore team.

He played in the sophomore game vs Helena Capital.

Forecast: Hellgate vs. Capital and Butte vs. West in semis. West-Hellgate rematch of Camel/Dick vs. Hayter/Sullivan game back in early 90s. Hellgate by 7.

OK, so the current "Camel/Dick" is Cox/McGillis. Who is the current "Hayter/Sullivan"?

Danny Sulivan and (Can not remember his first name) Hayter of Billings Senior faced Camel and Dick of Hellgate in the early 90's

Those are definitely your 4 best teams in the state throughout the year, I hope the pairings reflect this semifinal matchup. One team that seems to be hot right now if GFH - especially the Howard kid.

Hellgate, Capital and Butte all from the west...Butte or Capital get the bye to state? Butte if I am not mistaken.

4th straight? Big Sky has eliminated Capital in the playoffs 4 straight years?!?!! What are the odds of those two even meeting for a playoff game 4 straight years?

The if and when comment was a retorical question. I was saying that Big Sky would beat Kalispell tonight and then go to Capital for the fourth consecutive season. In 2001, Big Sky finished as the seven seed in the west, but won their play-in game and then took down 3rd seeded Capital. The next season, the same core of Jake Williams and Kevin Swenck returned to Helena, this time as the 5th seed in the west to play the 4th seeded Bruins. Big Sky overcame a double digit halftime lead and won going away. Last season, Stephon Thomas and Jesse Corbett led the 5th seeded Eagles past 4th seeded Capital in Helena for a third consecutive year. Big Sky could've set up a fourth straight playoff game where the winner would advance to the state tourney, but the Eagles lost to Kalispell tonight and are eliminated, so the deja vu can't happen. Now that Big Sky is out and I predict that Sentinel will lose to Helena High, GO HELLGATE!
