Hellgate Basketball

grizhoops_fan 987, i agree that Hasquet is highly overrated, but i could see how he is being highly recruited. He is a 6'7' wing player who can shoot. But hes also one of the least aggressive players in Montana. He never asserts himself, he isn't a vocal leader, he has no physicality, and basically hes just soft. I doubt he could play Division I basketball, i'd rank him as a frontier conference player at best. He might not even be in the top five players in Missoula. I'd say Jack McGillis, Trevor Morris, and then Charlie Cox are my top three and then possibly Paul Morris from Big Sky, Hasquet and his teammate Andy Garland would compete for the 4th and 5th spot.

Yes you are right Kellen was the 3rd option on Sentinel last year because somebody put it up before he could get it. As soon as Kellen grows up and matures a little more he will easily be the best player in this years class. Not to mention Kellen leads his team in every individual category. I wish Morris would have been more mentally tough and stuck it out at Sentinel.

I watched the 2nd 1/2 of the Sentinel/Capital game last night, and I thought he showed some pretty good skills. What I will say is that I don't think anyone can truly evaluate how good Kellen is because of the coaching at Sentinel.

I hate to criticize a high school coach, but why isn't this kid camped under the basket, with the focus of the game to feed him? Instead they pass the ball around the perimeter several times before someone throws up a bad shot.

From the 1/2 a game i saw him last night as well as last year, here are my observations:
Kellen did show on several instances that he could be a force to control the game. He shoots well, and at times goes hard to the bucket. He seems to focus too much on a big block instead of fundamental defense, and I though he should have been more active on the boards.

i think he could be a good D-1 player, probably as a walk-on, but needs good coaching. and a system he can work in.

This board is frustrating.
Seems to me that Kellen Hasquet is not a post player, but maybe I'm not seeing the additional 20 pounds that you must be.

He is a lithe, agile athlete who would not do real well camped out under the hoop. He is not a banger. That is not his game, you should be able to see that in about 5 minutes of watching him. He thrives around the three and mid-range jumpers. He's like a Richard Hamilton, why would you post him up. He holds the team together with his ball-handling ability.

I guess when he gets to college and gets some "good" coaching the coach will post him up. Maybe he'll be the next Boxley from Portland State....give me a break.

Andy Garland is the main post player at Sentinel. Kellen is a two or a three guard and that's what he'll be in college. Just because a kid is tall doesn't mean he is a post. What a good coach does is evaluate each player's strengths and play to them. Kellen is not a good post player. He is a good guard.

P.S. Congrats to Sentinel for dismantling Great Falls High tonight, a team that beat Hellgate, who according to all of you is way better coached than Sentinel.

Man, that sentinel team sucks lately. When will Sentinel figure it out and fire Fischer???

Oh, wait - sentinel loves keeping loser coaches around like Lyons and Fischer. With players like Henkel and Hasquet Fischer still finds a way to screw up a team.

I challenge anyone to find a coach in the AA ranks besides the Bozeman coach who has a better record then Fischer. Stop being idiotic and look at the facts.

Talk about losers, how about Scott Anderson, when's he gonna get Loyola to State and stop choking at divisionals.
Nevermind, I didn't want to strike a nerve there Sweetwyne.

Scott Anderson should have been relieved of his positoin a long time ago but it is hard to attract a coach to loyola since their pay is so poor.

Anderson has presided over some very talented teams with very good players for over a decade. Loyola has never faired well against the eastern part of the state.

As for Fischer, Sentinel has been a train wreck losing to Ronan???

Come on....

Well Sentinel seemed to come together nicely after the Ronan incident. Two close losses to decent AA teams and then tonight they killed GF High.

all this talk of sentinel beating GFH??? did anyone hear of Hellgate knocking off #1 Bozeman on Bozeman's home court. I heard Morris and McGillis each dropped 23 and Cox was throwin dimes as he usually does. Explosive... is your last name Hasquet??? you love giving him props and no one else. Hellgate is now the new #1 team in the state, simply because they have talent THAT IS WELL COACHED. unlike the sentinel teams of the past, hellgate is actually utilizing the talent they have and have won 6 straight. Sentinel lost to RONAN, and have lost 2 of their last 3. Hellgate is a different team since they played GFH and are showing it, they just beat BOZEMAN on their home court! EXplosive... stop giving fischer so much love, he's a terrible coach and everyone knows it. As for Morris, he definately made the best move by transferring, the Knights are playing their best bball, and are winning games, which is why morris transfered in the first place. Explosive....figure it out

Yes, that's a huge win for Hellgate HF 987. Good call on your part, I didn't think MH would beat Boz in Boz. Sounds like Morris kept them in it in th first half and McGillis finished them off in the second. I see Capital beat Butte, so the CHS-MH game over there should have a lot riding on it. If Cap. wins they will have the edge in the tie-breaker, but it looks like they will go in 1-2 with byes either way. Maybe a team from the Western AA can win it all this year.

Yeah, Hellgate made a statement last night for sure. I heard that Bozeman was on fire to start the game, but Hellgate just stayed close till the end. I think that the only reason capital beat Hellgate before Xmas was because it was on the road (helena refs  ) and because I heard McGillis had a terrible night. It seems like lately, he is playing a lot better and the fearsome threesome of he, morris, and cox are dominating right now. If Hellgate keeps getting better, they will for sure be the Western AA team taking state in Billings. p.s.- with the coaching of Jim Sampson, he will find a way to take them to the chipper

Explosive I'm just telling you what I saw in 1/2 a game - he played much better under the hoop than outside, using his height to his advantage rather than it being neutralized as another 3 point shooter. My point was I think he could be a D-I player, but he needs to find the right coaching and position. There is obviously a big difference between posting up in high school against kids 4" shorter than you and in college.

Obviously you have watched him a lot more than me, what is your thought, do you see him as a D-I guard? Do you see him in D-I at all?

BTW it seems to me Fisher played his brother in the same exact role last year, hanging around the 3 point line and bringing the ball down and shooting 3's. Think he will be a guard for the Griz?

You're right hF987, McGillis had a poor game vs. CHS. He got in foul trouble and went in the tank. He may have learned a valuable lesson that night in that he needed to keep his head in the game and didn't. I'd expect MH to win at home. MH has more talent (probably the best talent in AA), CHS played better team ball that night.

Kellen is young for his grade so I think that he is deceiving to watch at the time being. If he does happen to go D-1 and takes advantage of the redshirt process I do believe he could play D-1 ball. He has the talent but right now doesn't have the build or the mindset, but that could come with some maturation.

I see Jordan playing a lot like Matt Dlouhy of the Griz plays right now. Jordan can stroke the ball and is also a active rebounder, especially on the offensive end. He is getting much stronger and his athleticism has actually increased, he will be a valuable weapon for the Griz. Personally I don't think he would ever be as effective as he could be if he was to play with his back to the basket.

I know and like Jim Sampson, he's a good coach, good guy.

I don't think that Fischer has gotten a very good shake in this town. His teams have gone to state almost every year of his tenure and he treats his kids with a lot of respect. Being very close to the program especially when Henkel and Hasquet were involved, I saw some things that Fischer had to deal with that people from the outside didn't see and they took the end results and knocked his coaching. I'll always root for him because I don't think that nice guys have to finish last, he's the epitome of class and I know that he would put anything on the line to help his players(past and present) succeed outside the arena and do well in life.

I think that we here in Missoula are very lucky this year to be entertained by 4 of the top players in the state of Montana in Jack McGillis, Kellen Hasquet, Charlie Cox, and Trevor Morris. They are all great players and great kids with much respect for each other, I'm sure. I think that all four of them are going to see their time on a college court at some level. It is not often that one town has this many quality players at one time. I really wish the Griz would have gone after McGillis and Hasquet harder than they did. I really think they are missing out on these two home State (let alone Hometown) kids, however, I do not question the Griz coaching staff.

Explosive...why do you think Sentinel has gone to state so much under coach fisher? it is obvious that the talent he has been given has taken Sentinel there each year, only to not produce in big games where he is outcoached year after year. Coach Fisher is lucky to have his job, and is by far the worst coach in the garden city. I agree with you monthoops, we are lucky to have an abundance of talent here. However, I think when it comes down to it, Hasquet is the least mentally strong of all the players, and that will hurt him in college. I've never seen him have any emotion in a game, and although he has talent, I don't know if he will produce at the next level. The Hellgate trio I believe is being prepared for college by the tough love coaching of Jim Sampson. Sampson knows what it takes to play college, Fisher doesnt. Advantage Hellgate.

Until Sampson does something this year i.e. get to State and win a trophy of some color, I will go with Fish. And obviously I think that Fischer is a better coach then Laslovich of Big Sky.

Side notes
#1. Sampson hasn't made state...ever
#2. Joe Fischer was also a Grizzly Men's basketball assistant a few years back.

Of course Hellgate is better this year, they have waaaayyyy better players then anybody else in the city. I think that it's a crime that they've even lost a single game this year. If they don't win state this year I can't wait to see what all of you guys say on here.

Prediciton,....
"The Refs screwed Sampson" said hoopfan 987 after watching Hellgate self-destruct at state. "Trevor Morris just couldn't buy a bucket but a good coach lets a shooter shoot" continued hoopfan. Explosive 1 laughed and slapped the floor.

Does anyone else find it funny the number of views and posts this topic gets compared to Griz related topics? Maybe the best cure for Griz basketball attendance woes would be to have Hellgate play a quick pick-up game at halftime.

The AA polls have Hellgate behind Bozeman. Duh!!!! How can that be? What a bunch of pinheads. Hellgate is 10-3 with a fresh win over Bozeman in Bozeman and Bozeman has just lost two straight. The Hawks had a tough time with Belgrade last night.

I think thye have West at 1, Bozeman at 2, Capital at 3 (they lost to HHS last night) and Hellgate fourth. Don't recall fifth.
