HELL BENT on turning things around

No one took 2012 harder than Gregorak. In order to turn things around, he believes the Griz coaching staff must do as much improving as the players.

“Just those games we had become so accustomed to winning we dropped,” he said. “I think it was a culmination of a lot of outside distractions and coaching changes and new coordinators – a lot of excuses to lose those games and nobody wants to hear excuses, especially Griz Nation. Hopefully we learned from our mistakes.”

A punch word in summer workouts has been “finish.” As in finish strong – something the 2012 Griz failed to do in tight games against Eastern Washington, Northern Arizona, North Dakota and Montana State.

“That goes for the coaches, too,” Gregorak offered. “With a year under our belt and some new ideas with some of the new (assistant) coaches that have come in, I expect us to go be finishers.

“We’re fired up, I can tell you that. We can’t wait to get rolling on that fourth or fifth day of August and obviously that last Saturday of August under the lights will be about as electric as the last time they came to our place.”

Montana’s opponent on Aug. 31 is Appalachian State. Their last meeting in Zootown was an epic struggle in the snow that launched UM into the 2009 FCS title tilt.

Since then Montana has missed the playoffs twice in three years. In a “production-based business,” as Gregorak calls it, that’s not good enough.

Judging by what’s happening in July, you can expect an increase in production.

Classy comments by Gregorak. A big year is in store!!!

Good to hear the coaches are acknowledging their part in the 2012 disaster. I pray he has learned that damn soft shell coverage scheme sucks, and should not be used as often (I prefer never). I admit, Gregorak is the coach I am most focused on going into this season. If defensive pass coverage is passive from the get go this season, I will be pissed, and have some doubt about the season.

I am hoping to see a more aggressive pass defense this season. Also want to see more slobber knocking hits. Last year's defense was lacking emotion, physical presence, and aggressiveness (mainly from the secondary).

Please Ty, let these boys play and hold them accountable. DO NOT hold their hand and treat them using kid gloves!!!!!!!!!

From the looks in spring ball, no defensive changes looked to be made. Sorry if that disappoints some. Though I'm sure there is tweaking. Coaches are always learning and copy catting, so I'm sure it won't be entirely the same, but the bases aren't changing from what I saw.

And though coach Ty certainly shoulders a lot of the blame for what happened last season, if you've ever seen him in action, i Can ASSURE YOU, the man doesn't hold anyone's hand or handle anything with kid gloves. It's quite opposite in fact.

I don't care what coverage we're in as long as everyone can cover their assignment. They have the potential to be a well oiled machine. What I'm going to be paying attention on is making adjustments throughout the game. That hurt us last year.

excellent article.....hell bent will be a necessary ingredient to be successful this year so you might as well start this in July, the sooner the better. thanks grandpa for keeping ty focused....

Again, Ty is more a product of Paulson than of Breske....

I have really low expectations for coach Ty. If his pass defense can go from 122nd in FCS to 61st it will be a tremendous accomplishment. Last year reminded me of the '98 Griz when the offense struggled but still managed to put up enough points to win provided the defense kept opponents to less than 24 points.

The transition from position coach to coordinator is not an easy one and just one year of experience goes a long ways. You could tell last year, especially with mid game adjustments and some of the strategy that was implemented that we were at a disadvantage in coordinating an effective defensive game plan. Last year was a learning experience for TG, much like it was for Jonathan Smith as his first year as OC in Pflu's system. I expect dramatic improvement with TG this year and proactively working on strategies that best utilizes the strengths of our personnel instead of being reactive, especially with the secondary.

Your first sentence is correct. Your third sentence is usually not a big deal. Good players will play well and be successful in any defense. Good adjustments help and can help as the game goes on, but again your first sentence is actually the key.

I have high expectations for Gregorak. He is a terrific coach. He will do well this year, and will eventually go big places. Mark my words.

I can assure you coach Delaney's family and friends kept him "focused" over this 3rd and 4th of July holiday he spent in Butte as well. :thumb:

The Griz coaches and players are all excited and very confident in the up-coming season :!:

IntuitiveGriz says it's going to be a GOOD ONE  :egriz:

So if making adjustments isn't a big deal? How did the west beat the east in the Shrine Game there hot shot? Being able to make adjustments is a huge part of the game. Just sayin........

Are you saying that the West made adjustments in their secondary coverage that caused them to come back from a 0-28 deficit? That's pretty funny. You are even dumber about football than I thought.
