The University of Montana isn't in good financial shape and enrollment isn't great.
Structurally, both Montana schools are more dependent on ticket revenue than any of their peers. There's no support for increasing the percentage of athletic revenue that comes from the university, which makes it really difficult to ramp up the scholarship count, not only for football but the additional sports Montana would need to add under Title IX.
If it’s been said once it’s been said a million times. Neither school gets to go anywhere unless both schools go together.
Also I had thought right before we were considering the WAC we added those sports to get us into title 9 compliance. Is that not the case?
That's been said, and said, and said and said by people who accept it as truth, but don't know a damn thing. It has never, ever been said by anyone who matters. There has never been a conference invite the would have even started a conversation leading to a comment like that from a regent, or a university president.
Montana belonged to four different football conferences, in which MSU wasn't a member, before the Big Sky.
I would remind everyone that when it comes to balance, MSU has been allowed to basically expand without restraint while all the other colleges and the other university in the Montana University System crumble.
No offense to parity in athletics, but there are way more important matters in Montana higher education where balance is crucial, in which the Regents have done nothing. And before some lunkhead suggests that MSU enrollment has driven by a surge in engineering enrollment, I suggest they take a look at the liberal arts programs at MSU which is where much of the growth is.
Ask Washington State how inseparable it feels from Washington about now, or Oregon State from Oregon.
This idea that somewhere buried in the rocks of the Continental Divide is a tablet stating MSU and UM can't be separated, is complete bullshit.
