Yeah but we were far better than the cats for 95% of the season. We don’t play just for cat griz. They do. We had a great season playing the second toughest record in the country. Beat two conference champions and are seeded in the playoffs. 3 weeks ago the cats playoff chances were in doubt. They needed two games against bottom dwellers to end the season and get back on track.
Bobby’s season was very successful. All of this while being only a few seasons removed from sanctions. I’m happy with where we’re at and headed. This team is young.
I actually felt that the Cats and the Grizzlies were pretty even all year long. Both beat a top team out of a second tier conference (Monmouth and SEMO, respectively), both got their lunch handed to them by a Sac State team playing at their peak, and both lost a game against a playoff team on the road. I think both teams will at least make the semi-finals, unless they suffer key injuries or just don't show up for a game.
With respect to playing for one game a year vs. the playoffs, I unfortunately think many of my fellow Bobcat fans overemphasize the Brawl. If you lived through the streak as a Cats fan like I did, there still exists a weird mixture of disbelief and relief every time the Cats don't lose or even don't look bad losing to UM. What happened on Saturday hopefully finally exorcises the last of the demons of the streak. It is better for both fan bases if this is "just" an important, conference, in-state rivalry rather than what it has been/become.
With respect to the press conference, it sounds like some of the Cat fandom was put off by Hauck indicating that their game planning for Troy Anderson was for naught. They believed it was meant to somehow diminish from the way the Cats dominated from start to finish. In the interest of full disclosure, I didn't watch the presser, but I think I have a less emotional response than most. Cat fans hate Bobby for his first tenure with the Grizzlies. He hated the Cats and had great success against them. His quote about wishing for a fifth quarter to beat MSU some more was cold-hearted and biting (I have no problem with it personally. If you want to shut someone up, you beat them). Put this together and the situation is ripe for conformation bias. If you think Bobby Hauck is an arrogant jerk without the capacity to be humble, you will see that in the press conference. If not, you probably appreciate that he accepted responsibility in the way that best benefits his team and is now charged with leading the team into the playoffs.
