Hauck Completely Transformed the Secondary

Brought In 3 new transfer safeties. Calhoun switched to corner. Based only on the one game, the secondary looks good. There is probably good or decent depth at the corner, with all the redshirt sophisticated corners. Epperly and McGinnis are presumably ready to play at safety too.

Tackling seemed very good. How about Robertson's hit on the receivers the NI sideline, where he knocked the guy back about 4 or 5 yards.

The secondary went from a likely weak area to an area of strength. At least based on one game.

I liked the new defensive scheme. It seemed that players were lined up in the right places. Coverage often resulted in multiple defenders on receivers when the ball arrived.

Agreed on all counts. The Calhoun move was genius. Miller and Robertson are ballers, for sure.

With the emergence of Olson as a legit LB threat, our back 7 are looking good (maybe a bit thin, but good).

People have been saying Olson is a stud since the spring. I like Cochran at LB too, although he didn't play much. Has been nursing a hamstring for much of pre-season.

Well seeing him against live opposition made me a believer immediately. He was virtually unstoppable. If Buss can get/stay healthy, our back 7 are in great shape.

Plus, Olson is a big kid. I agree. He looked terrific and dominant.

This team is going to be fun to watch this year which I consider a transition year. There will be growth and some stumbles. I look for good things and next year.....watch out!!!

Heck I thought he looked like a stud last year. He played quite a bit and was very disruptive. And the last 2 years he’s been a beast on special teams. It’s been fun to see his progression and you just knew he was going to be a star

Perhaps I wasn't paying enough attention last year. I see he had 38 tackles, 10th on the team. But more of them were earlier in the season, when Strahm wasn't playing and then wasn't starting. 1 sack, 2 TFL. I was focusing on Banks, Buss and Strahm. Those 3 had great seasons.

Those three were studs for sure. I’m just glad Dante patiently waited for his turn and stuck with the Griz, as he could’ve easily been a starting star backer at any other big sky school

Did Epperly see the field on Saturday? I don't recall seeing him at all on defense.
No, both him and McGinnis didn’t get in on defense that I saw. The only safties that played were Robertson, Hauck, Miller, and Sandry

I agree, I thought they played very well. I was skeptical about Robby starting over Epperly, but he always seemed to be near the ball and made some good plays.

I seem to recall that UNI's QB had a handful of poor throws in the first half to what appeared to be open receivers. I'm not very familiar with a 4-2-5 defense, so where do the "holes" in the secondary usually appear?

Calhoun looks like he could be the next great Griz corner, with next level size and talent.

When we get Buss healthy, a LB core with Buss and Olson could be devestating to offenses.

I am SOOO excited for this defense to continue to grow!

Calhoun is already very good and will get better, but he doesn't really have next level size. 5'10', 176 in the program. He is certainly not bigger than that. I assume he's our smallest corner.

Drake QB is very accurate and will be a good test for secondary. UNI QB was off on many throws before he was replaced.
