Haslam's Recent Interview on Where UM Is

The driving factor for "Moving Up" isn't football. It is Basketball, and they wouldn't be moving up, just moving to a different conference. Basketball (Men's and Women's) would be the larger beneficiary of a "Move Up". It would get both a chance at getting better talent, and in a conference that has more chances at bids into the NCAA Tourney, which in turn would mean way more money split between all the conference schools. Mountain West Men's Basketball had 6 bids last year (their highest ever since 5 in 2012-13). Even if it is 3-4 a year, that is a major improvement. And the bids aren't for 14-16 seeds or Play-in... They are games VS teams that you would actually have a chance against (not every year of course). Each tourney game gets the Conference one "Unit" (worth about 2 million dollars) each win gets you another "Unit". Yes, Football drives the car now, but it doesn't have to be the only driver if you "move up".

Don’t know. Assume the finances work for them. Some started with lower attendance and improved that aspect. Most didn’t have large fan bases that were used to being on or near top most every year, like UM’s fan base. So, being FBS offsets being mediocre. The fan bases don’t demand excellence, so the schools don’t demand or need a high budget to get there. As time goes on, the new and changing fan base doesn’t remember the good old days. The programs are low level FBS, they are fine with that, and there is no demand or sentiment to go back or step down. I would think the early years are interesting or exciting, and then the program is what it is with the evolving fan base. Just like in life, jumping or climbing up is not the same as jumping or climbing down. I would think Idaho football is more fun now than it was in the last 10 years of FBS.

At Montana, football is king. Not basketball. This may be your view, but it is not Montana’s.

This subdivision is already an absolute joke, and when NDSU leaves it will become depressingly obvious how much of a joke it really is. Boy does it make me nauseous seeing other teams take the leap that UM rightfully should have already taken

It is, both Universities are looking at how that would bring in extra revenue. There is a difference in Driving Factors, and team that Drives.. The driving factor would be to improve Basketball. Football is already there, and paying for itself as well as everything else. Imagine if Basketball could pay an extra 3-4 million a year as well.

Then you should say “a” driving factor, and not say football isn’t the driving factor.

While FBS brings in more revenue, and also increases expenses significantly; and while UM would, of course, like more revenue; I don't see increasing revenue as an important factor for UM in evaluating a move to FBS.

I wonder if it’s because of the recent NDSU news in regards to the MWC
