Haslam Interview-My Conclusion

EverettGriz said:
I've spoken with Kent about this. All I'll say is that the OP's take is incorrect.

Did you tell Kent that UM needed to move right away because you read an article saying NDSU's attendance was down, and even though UM season tickets and attendance are up, and fan excitement is high, UM should assume that it is not far behind NDSU?

No. Because he already understands this.

When your administration is from someplace else and they aspire to mark time and not upset the status quo, you can't move forward and grow accordingly. That's not to say change for the sake of change is a good strategy; however, I've read many compelling arguments as to why it makes more sense to play Utah State, Wyoming, Colorado State, Nevada, UNLV, New Mexico, the flagship Dakotas versus those lower tier schools in Washington, Oregon and California. I'll never understand the mindset out here. Ever. No real regional rivalries and therefore, the program is relegated to podunk competition. Pitiful actually.

Besides, who would go watch Colorado State, Wyoming, Utah State, Nevada, UNLV, New Mexico when you can go see Eastern Washington, Cal Poly, Northern Colorado, Portland State...

Surely you jest about UNM and UNLV. NO ONE wants to watch those schools. I live near Albuquerque and have never once gone to a Lobos game, and never will.

Would you if they were playing the Griz?

Hey, little rah-rah guy. I will post until my demise. Now, get your Griz shirt on and ride your bike down Higgins.
You have gotta be the biggest child on this board. You're so immature that when things don't go your way, you throw a tantrum, like you did by starting this thread. Grow up dude!

And for the record, I read the article and had a much different interpretation than you did. Haslam stated that right now there aren't a lot of answers, therefore making it hard to prepare for anything. Nowhere in the article did he rule out a move up, all he said was that he has no idea what's going to happen over the next year, and he's right. There's no way to know what dominos might fall next.

This is exactly how I perceived the article too. Too many questions to be answered at this point. At no point reading the article did I get the notion that a move up was off the table.

Yes but I will watch the Griz play anybody which directly refutes cat grad's point that more people will want to watch the Griz play these teams that he named. Whether we're playing in the mountain West or in the big sky, every conference has bottom feeders.

There's another revenue sport to consider though. Bouncy ball brings in a bit of money for many mid-major programs. I believe even New Mexico State has had decent success the last few years.

Yeah we will too. But, how does UM increase fan base, enrollment, funds, and just expand all together? With a move up. I know damn well UM would be competitive in the MWC, they would be as the team stands right now. We would attract better recruits too. Which you may not think so but, to most kids, they don't even know wtf a FCS(I've met a lot of adults that didn't even realize UM was in the FCS) is. Kids know that FBS is the highest level of college football and that NFL teams will look at them more seriously. Having to play a division down hurts a lot of egos. Just look at it from a kids view. I have faith in Montana. I don't think we have to be in a lower, watered down, division of college football to be competitive.

Y'all that be like "I'm so pumped to watch the Northern Colorado game" fucking kill me.

So at first reading this thread I was like typical, we will sit in purgatory…

However, after reading the article I felt a bit more optimistic. Kent said what he could really.

He said we are happy where we are at. He can say we are looking desperately to get out!

He indicated having to keep your head on a swivel right now. Letting some decisions be made as to how things shake out with NCAA decision makers. I can respect that!

Kent obviously has to have his feelers out there as does basically every upper level FCS and G5 FBS schools.

I can see when the Elite Football Series programs break away, be it two conferences or four, we will see the NCAA I think reduce the number or programs some and number of scholarships to be at the Premier Football Series.

Most PFS schools, be it a mix and match of upper level FCS and FBS left out either break even or loose money as things sit now.

I have said it before that UM has not done all of the upgrades we have just to compete against the current FCS schools and the Big Sky.

I could see the EFS keeping teams more regional to save costs and having a playoff.

I can see UM and MSU in a western conf with teams from Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Utah.. Maybe even Oregon and Washington in Oregon State and WSU.

UM just needs to position itself to be attractive once the time is right.

I appreciate what you've stated and truly believe the powers that be out west have been on the phone and conducting zoom conferences just as the Sun Belt administrators did. The pac unfortunately controls what happens to the western schools.

I've watched and read Mike Leach's assessments of the pac administrators, officials and overall environment with more than a grain of salt because I believe everything he's said is true.

Scared of the donors, that like watching UM beat on teams that have 2000 fans.

This. A majority of the boosters are driving the bus, and they have no desire for change.
Especially the Missoula Saloon Keepers who are delighted with an extended number of games resulting from the playoffs.

If you are, or were, a UM Grad Student, then you should know you need to cite your source(s).

Suffice it to say there's enough sound bites out there to last a lifetime. Remember ten or 15 years ago when certain ESPN loudmouths stated the PAC 10 would never be a viable conference until they fix their officiating? You can also find Leach quotes that he didn't insinuate, he stated the PAC officials fixed the outcomes of games; e.g., they determined who won. Pretty strong statements. But, there's a lot of "stuff" one really ought to take with a grain of salt.

Just do a quick Google search instead of reading an APA formatted paper in a chat room...

Just saying cite your source when attributing a statement to someone, anyone. :thumb:
Doesn't have to be in APA format. For example, you could have just written "Mike Leach, on a recent 'Paul Finebaum Show' stated...."
This has the advantage of you not being lumped in with all the other 'I know something you don't know' crowd, claiming 'X' but never attributing anything to anybody, which is so prevalent on eGriz. Those 'confidential sources.'

I understand. I do enjoy reading the HUGE number of posts by an individual from Fort Peck who went to high school in Bozeangeles and college at Dartmouth and Stanford refer to the U of M as his team..

The higher order thinking skills displayed in this site provides a great deal of insight as to the current state of affairs in collegiate athletics and the most fun seems to be a few folks whom love to incite the rest of the keyboard warriors...

The FCS is a lesser division than DIi was in the 70's when we were in that. We are going to have to move to the G5 eventually. We finally achieved Tier I status this year so we need to make the move sometime. I think geography is our biggest challenge.
