Harsh reality on roster changes

BillingsMafia said:
Roster changes are needed. I was very high on Stitt but after watching every game I was disappointed about the lack of a quick hit short passing game. I thought Stitt's offense was built around that. I saw no creativity, no polish or consistency. So far I rate Stitt far far behind Read, Pflugrad and Glenn. I have hope but not optimisim. You either have it or not and if you don't you don't get it.

If you're rating him behind Pflugrad you've got a short memory. Pflu didn't get into the playoffs his first year. Didn't win a playoff game. Didn't beat EWU. DIdn't beat MSU. Didn't beat (or play) NDSU.

About the only thing the two have in common is they both lost to Cal Poly and Weber in their first year as coach.

And keep in mind: That 2010 team had no less than EIGHT players who either ARE or WERE in an NFL camp after their college careers ended (Reynolds, Wilson, Sambrano, Moore, McSurdy, Tru, Tripp, McKnight).

Can you name eight guys off this year's team that you think will ever see the inside of an NFL locker room?

Holmes
KVA
Jones
Henderson(?)

That's it.

I actually think the Griz were pretty talented individually. There wasn't a single defensive player in the FCS better than Holmes, with all due respect to James Cowser. KVA was the best OLB in the conference this season and it wasn't close. Jamaal Jones was the second-best receiver in the Big Sky, maybe in the FCS and Roberts and Hendu are both beasts. And the list goes on. However, two glaring flaws were where individual talent doesn't make nearly as much of a difference as collective talent. And that's on the offensive line, and the interior of the defensive line. Both have been discussed to death, but that's where the Griz lacked what I would call collective talent, and it was a glaring weakness against really good football teams late in the season. PSU, SDSU and NDSU. IMHO, you take even the 2011 or 2012 offensive line and put them on this football team and Montana scores 40 points per game and John Nyguen, yes, I said John Nyguen is easily a 1,000-yard rusher. On the other side, you put Tonga or Bienneman on the 2015 defense and the Griz are Top 10 in total defense in the FCS. The other thing I think is a concern is the gaps in talent in the depth chart this season. Stitt talked a bit about that in the presser yesterday. We all saw what happened when one of the guns went down, QB, Center, OLB, RB, I think the talent level dropped pretty seriously. So, in essence, you can say the entire 90-man roster isn't talented enough. That I can agree with. But, I don't agree that the Griz didn't have talent all together. At several positions, they had some of the best players in the conference, if not the country.

And let's not forget that Stitt has 4 less schollies to offer to beef up his recruits---- thanks to Royce's kowtow to the federales.

1 more year left of that crap I believe - can't come soon enough.

Still, the after effects of that won't be washed away until the 2020 season!!! That is when this reduced scholarship class will graduate...

Well yeah... but they'll be able to use those 4 right away, so they could split them among JCs and drop downs or go after a few more in-state kids. The impact will be seen right away I think.

They will be able to use the scholarships right away, yes, but the handful of kids they will miss out on recruiting in this year's class due to lacking 4 full scholarships (or between 8-10 partials) will carry through until the 2019 season.

Maybe "between now and then" was incorrect, but between the end of the season and spring ball things could change and that they would have an official roster then. As for the question, he said "no comment", he did not pretend. He never said anything denying that changes have been made.
He said roster changes would be made a spring camp.

In fact, roster changes were made last Monday.

The fact is he was asked a direct question and he did not answer it. He specifically refused to, "pretending" that such changes would be made at Spring Camp, because that's exactly what he said.

No, he said there would be an official roster for spring, not that there would be no changes prior to spring. He had no comment currently on the roster.

75.....I have a new question to ask you....nothing to do with stats.....who do you think should have been the starting QB for the Griz this past season....

You. You obviously know all about it.

That's so cute, it deserves an award.

You. You obviously know all about it.

This is a simple question.....why is it so difficult for you to take a stand and actually state who you think should have been the starting QB for the Griz this past season......

So what. It seems that box is asking you a direct question and you are specifically refusing to answer. Does this call your honesty and accountability into question?

Been living under a rock for a few days, do we know who else is gone besides the two mentioned...haven't scanned every thread?

That's all that's known, per what has been confirmed by reporters.

Actually I did answer several times. He's lied about that too. I've republished those answers several times. You're both just trolling now. Your whole point is to obscure the fact that he's the one that could not justify his answer when I published some actual facts about it.

And which Stitt refused to confirm when asked.

What is your answer then?

Ok thanks Brint, I speculated after the Bison game that Willie might not be the guy Stitt goes to long-term but didn't expect him to be cut loose...caught me a little off-guard.

One thing I take out of this is Stitt has a plan and is going to do whatever he thinks is needed to get there, and isn't afraid to ruffle feathers along the way...I take that as a good sign.

Yeah, so what. Your sense of entitlement is impressive.
I didn't ask the question, but the answer was clear to the entire State.

Changing up my tone here a bit as the resident sugarcoater.

I've been reflecting on the rumors of impending roster changes. While no names were mentioned in Stitt's end of season press conference yesterday it seems that at the very least there's a few upcoming changes - if not more to be seen later. And while I'm going to bet that there's chances for redemption in the winter and spring workouts and camp - this coaching staff is recognizing something with the current Grizzly roster. It's not good enough for deep playoff runs. And in the broader picture we're seeing that most Big Sky rosters aren't equipped for that either.

This last weekend we met the current pinnacle of championship rosters and were dominated. Yes we caught this same team on it's heels in week 1 - but this time, when the matchup carried more weight, NDSU rolled. They're the benchmark. Other teams as well have shown regular playoff success of late, teams like UNI, SHSU, and Illinois State. I'd argue recently Coastal Carolina as well, although they got bounced in week 1 this year.

These are the types of rosters to aspire to for more playoff success than we've seen in the last 3 years. And my hope is that some upcoming changes, the new recruits, and a full off-season with this staff is going to focus on that.

One could probably argue the current roster is built for what it's done. A regular season mixed with some good wins, some frustrating losses, generally lower performance on the road, limited depth, and quick exits from the playoffs.

Stitt and company presumably see this too and are making plans to improve this team. It's going to be messy, it's going to piss some people off, but in the end Griz fans may really like the result.

Go Griz!
Can you put this is some sort of multi-colored chart to help me understand it?
