Hammer time

The conference sanctions, brings it to where it should be. The kids can continue to participate, but no "championships/Bowls)

When a program fosters the kind of people (or the people foster the kind of program) that allows people in charge to decide to not even refer a concern to the proper people to investigate, the program needs dealt with just as well as the people involved. The kind drivel that came out of PR's mouth about Paterno is not only sick, but the very reason the program needs wacked along with the "fans/boosters" that help foster it. I'm disappointed they went so lightly.

I'm not sure that they should have gone farther, I think it is appropriate. part of what kept them from getting hit harder though was because the PSU president is committed to changing the culture and was open and forthright with this process and the penalties.

If the president had taken the tact that PR would propose then they may have been expunged from the NCAA all together.

What do you think I proposed or would propose? I didn't propose anything, and have never considered suggesting what the president should do.

Yes, it's true that I don't think PSU should have hired Louis Freeh. I know quite a bit about him. I expressed the same view when he was hired.

My post was based on the sanctions in the twitter leak. The 3 worst sanctions listed in the tweet didn't materialize, so my views on the sanctions, the impact on the State College community, and Emmert/ncaa are not as strong. I still think the ncaa has gone overboard--like many on the board have said--but my earlier view was based on those 3 extreme sanctions, which didn't materialize.

The only problem I have is with the vacating of wins. Basically you are telling 14 years of student athletes that they never won a game, never played in a bowl game and never earned their Big 10 Championship. They knew nothing about what happened yet the feel the brunt of it.

I can see your viewpoint, but saw that saction differently as to be the NCAA taking wins away from the coaching staff (read Paterno and staff) and athletic department (athletic director and staff). I think that PSU players from those years will still remember the wins and losses and will not forget their history. The NCAA has the power to make member institutions forfeit games, but I think this $60 million fine/victim fund is an unprecedented move (NCAA act as prosecutor, jury, judge and executioner).

Penn St is lucky they didn't get "death". Some of you seem to have forgotten that the cover up/non-action was done to protect the program, to protect the Paterno legacy and to protect the school. This wasn't a case of folks not reading their policy manual correctly or misfiling some paperwork. This was a deliberate, fully-informed decision to cover up the rape of children. Taking away wins (Paterno), the fine (the school) and the reduction in scholarships (the program) penalizes those who directly benefited from these actions while minimizing the damage to the local community that is dependent on football games for it's livelihood.

Thanks Gwen, we already know where your fantasy lies.

How about the punishment for the people who didn't do anything about it? Sandusky is going away for the rest of his life, Paterno did something but admittedly not enough, died. What about all the higher ups, why isn't this 60 million coming out of their pensions?
A couple of those resigned higher ups will most likely spend time in prison for obstruction of justice. And most likely be denied said pensions. If you think said pensions have a value anywhere 60 million you are a dolt. Sorry, that's the reality here.

I don't have a problem with taking away the wins. Lets be honest, if this had been reported like it should have been, how many of those star players would still go to Penn State? Would have been huge for recruiting.

As for the fine, meh, I don't really care.

As for the players...all of them are free to transfer to where they want, incoming recruits and current players. They'll still get the chance to play college football somewhere and get a free education, so don't feel too bad for them. In regards to the PSU fans...they're all weird, weird people. I mean, look at this shit.

As someone that is from Missoula, and currently work abt 30 miles from College Station, I found this statement ironic. The fan bases are very similar, and if you dont think that Griz fans would have the same reaction or worse to NCAA penalties, then you probably need a reality check.

LongTimeCatFan has talked to his/her inside contacts and:

My guess is that the NCAA won't publish their findings and issue any punishments until after fall camp starts. Also, my guess is that there will be a 2 year post season ban and a loss of 10 scholarships, and loss of practice time. They may even do that stupid "vacating wins" thing like there is an alternate universe in which we say it never happened, but it might just be the 2011 season.

Do you have any factual information on this or I am just being called stupid? I see two most likelys and a number comparison that is not given. How many people are in on the cover up over the years? How many pensions? I never said they were that big either, I just want the 60 million to come out of the pot of the people that are responsible. If they don't have enough tough shit guess you can move in with your kids when you retire. I have heard absolutely 0 about these people being fined or charged with jack shit. The program is getting thrown under the bus for what a couple jerk offs did. If one of your kids breaks a glass do you punish all of them or just the one that broke it? Or in the NCAA's case, only the other kids who didn't break the glass. I would appreciate in the future that you didn't guess as to my intelligence while comparing to my statements with umm's and kind of's and maybe's and most likely's

I'm not up to date on any of this, but I don't believe that the NCAA can fine a specific person. The people who are in the upper positions will most likely get their punishments from the courts or possibly the school.

Whether or fans would make similar statements or not is not the question. It's sad and pathetic that they're saying that. No defense for it.

Yep. It's like some people didn't even listen to what Emmert said yesterday. The kids can still compete, they still keep their scholarships, and they all still have a chance at a free education.

That's exactly what Emmert said about getting the priorities straight at PSU. No players are being punished, outside of going to a bowl game, when you step back and look at how 90% of the players on that team won't have an NFL career.
