Gustafson Stats

Seems some folks are surpsrised Gustafson has the edge as starter. Others don't seem surprised at all. What I do think is that folks forget how legit this kid was coming out of high school. He put up huge numbers and many teams, including FBS, were after him. Here's a quick reminder of those accolades. I hope we see some of this in the fall:

HIGH SCHOOL: He passed for 2,913 yards and 20 TDs with just eight interceptions to lead Billings West to an 11-2 record as a senior in 2011, when he was chosen the Class AA state MVP on offense. He is West's all-time leading passer with 6,202 yards. He is one of just eight players in Montana prep history to surpass 6,000 passing yards. He was 22-8 as a starter, including 22-5 his junior and senior seasons. He was one of just three Montana athletes to play the annual East-West Shrine Game, Montana-Dakota Football All-Star Game, and the Montana-Wyoming Football All-Star Basketball game. His prep football coach was Paul Klaboe. He was named to Great Falls Tribune "Super Team". He was named the Midland Roundtable (Billings) Athlete of the Year. He was a starter on West's 22-1state championship basketball team as a senior.

Good point. But the reality is he should be coming into his own as a red shirt junior and potentially replacing a three year starter... Why it's a total surprise, I don't know....

I hope Gus follows in the tracks of Billings West QB's to lead the Griz!
Great company....Edwards and Selle!
Go Griz!

Uneasiness comes from Delaney's refusing to give him any meaningful PT in the last two years. He is totally gametime green thrown into a very tough first four games. As a redshirt junior he should be better prepared.

I like the stat gus has in the classroom.....4.0 student, graduated with honors, which has allowed him to pick up stitts offense quickly, read the defense and audible to the right play at the right time....all this with 6'7" 230 pounds, good athlete for that size (played at high level in basketball) and can really spin the football on a line better than any of our other qbs. if given enough game time, I think he could be exceptional....

Unfortunately this thread will probably be followed up by a "Gustafson Sucks" thread because so many posters don't have their #1 pick at the starting position.

I like Gustafson alot and was really surprised that many on here were writing him off. Some didn't even include him in the conversation. I think some of that was based on observation of his lack of PT and place in the depth chart the last few years. For most, though, I think there was a stigma that a tall QB with the apparent characteristics of a pro-style QB could not be effective in an up tempo spread offense.

Fact is that he is actually a good athlete with the ability to move. He might not have the raw speed and quickness that some of the other QBs have on the roster, but he makes up for that with good feet, mechanics, intelligence, and most of all, the ability to read and react quicker.

Saying that, the learning curve for Stitt's offense is steep and I think some of the other guys (if they put in the work) will catch up with him this summer. On the other hand, I think the offense will also only get more complex and Gus has shown that he is able to figure things out quicker than the other guys.

Definitely his job to lose.

I think Gus will have a solid couple of years to finish out his eligibility. If Stitt believes he's the guy then that's enough for me to get on board. I hate to look too far into the future but I think that the NEXT guy after Gus is going to be something special. Pflug will have a shot, but I think Stitt is gonna recruit at least one more quarterback that's gonna make competition for the starting position really hot.

Right now it looks like Gus has the best "head" for the offense. Others might or might not have a better set of physical skills, but they are going to have to prove they can run the offense better than Gus in the fall. If I were a QB candidate, I would plan a very busy summer. But this is a good problem to have.

I wish he'd quit staring down receivers tho. He's looking at his 1 guy before the ball is even snapped. It was driving me nuts. He'll do good tho. I hope this new offense isn't a 3 year to get it down type of thing.

Look, it's nothing to do with Gustafson, it's just that, in general, kids who were born in Montana are lazy, shiftless, and not very bright, whereas kids born in neighboring states come from better families. So he really can't help it. But we'll cheer him on just the same.

Exactly. when I think of lazy, shiftless and not very bright, Colt Anderson immediately pops into my head!

True. I agree with your assessment. We'll just have to wait and see how things pan out....

Quick reads are at a HUGE premium in the Stitt "ball control" offense. If Gus has that ability, he'll get the job. And past history for young men this age can be meaningless -- have seen amazing feats of "growing up" in the past, especially when they aren't being told how great they are.
