Growler: There is NO hook for Gus

grizpack said:
Never say never. I know Stitt has indicated that it is Gus for good.

People say a lot of things, and at some point change their minds. A lot of divorced people promised "till death do us part."

I don't think Gus should have a short leash on him. I like what I have seen, and I have watched him play sports since little league. Yesterday, he threw some great balls, and let the point of the ball get up on a few throws and they sailed on him. That is correctable if he works on it. Others have trouble correcting it.

I am a little concerned if Stitt thinks there is no one else even close.... He signed most of the remaining QB's. I would hope that there are a couple that are fairly capable.

Breathe deep. This is the 2nd game in an entirely new system. We played a good team that has given us fits for the past few years. It was non-conference. We will be fine. Gus will be fine. Stitt will be fine. Growler will be fine. Hav will be fine.

Yes we will all be fine. Just don't mis-quote me. (not you.... Have-A-Tampa)

You are incorrect in stating Stitt....."signed most of the remaining QB's. He inherited most, if not all. Gus, Simis, and Weyer were already here, Pflug was an early verbal in Delaney's last season. Prater is a walk-on. Not sure about Chalich. I know there were early rumors that he was coming, but I'm not sure when the decision was made to bring him in.

I attended the introductory press conference for Stitt. The very first question Stitt was asked was "what to you want in a QB?" His answer: "he has to have feet". "He has to see when the DB's turn their back to him and take advantage" Well, Gus does not have feet. Gus may be our best QB now, and maybe for the entire season. But he may be challenged by Willy next year, or if Stitt is not happy with his QB's he will have time to find the "ideal' QB tranfer to fit his offense.

Concerning Gus. Re-watch the game in slow motion on your soft chair. Sure he has problems like any young inexperienced QB. BUT some of his missed plays were made by our receivers. SO many drops that were catchable made his poor performance much worse. Another problem were the receivers running the WRONG route causing messed up plays and interceptions. Gus changed the plays because of the bluff charge by Poly...way to many times. About the time they run up to the line of scrimage hike the ball and catch them out of position! He will learn as he gets experience.
Gus has a tendency to toss high. Not just his first throw of the game but he continues that way. He stares down his receivers making it easy for the defense to figure out where his throw is going. However Gus is coming along and I beleive he will continue to get better. I like the young guy and if I am coach Stitt I stick with him.

Why? He was simply PART of the reason we lost to Poly. Our kicking game was off. Our defense was off. Our punt returns were bad to the bone. Almost every aspect of our entire team was off....Bottom Line!

The good thing is every thing we were bad at is very fixable. Most of the things we did wrong will be worked on and all of these issues will be much better the next time we see the Griz in Wa Griz. Stick with Gus because he will get much better....no time to panic...eh Growler?

I know there were some that were already here. I know he didn't go out and strongly recruit everyone that is here. However, Pflug was a "verbal". He didn't have to honor that if he didn't like what he saw. Same thing with Prater and Chalich. He had no problem telling the fullbacks and tight ends to make changes or move on. If he kept them on the team and at QB, it is his decision.

I'm not panicking, i'm simply commentating on various aspects that I see as the season unfolds. Isn't that what a message board if for?

OK growls alot Atlanta. Yes it is and keep commentating. A comment from you is also good with me so keep it up you old geezer!

I have never met a head college football coach who wasn't completely or pretty much pig-headed. I thought that was a requirement to be a good coach. The good ones are very confident in their abilities and decisions. They stick with their decisions until they get another "pig-headed" idea that they think is better.

Gus earned the starting job, in practices and scrimmages, throughout spring and fall camp. Then he went out and had a really good game on national TV vs. NDSU. There's no way Stitt pulls him during 1 bad game. 2 or 3 bad games in a row, however...I think there is a hook at some point.

But I believe in Gus. I think he'll correct the overthrowing problem, and/or Stitt might tweak things a bit to make the O a bit more Gus-friendly. And as several have pointed out, the Poly loss wasn't just on him.

HEY !!! Watch the "Old Geezer" stuff. I resemble that remark, but have managed to retain a lot of my youthful enthusiasm and ability to converse intelligently. (at least most of time) :coffee:

I have a feeling that by game 5...nobody on here will be worrying about Gus!

I hope you are right, and certainly don't think Coach Stitt should, or would, sit Gus after two games - one great, and one poor. However, to suggest that Gus is the #1 for now on, no matter what, as was done here, is to suggest that Coach Stitt is a fool. I don't believe that, regardless of what he said at a press conference. Gus isn't going to win any games with his legs, so I can't believe that if he doesn't start throwing a whole lot better than he did last weekend that Stitt would not to at least give Prater and Chalich another look.

If they don't have a grasp of the offense then it doesn't matter how well they can run or throw. It's really that simple.

Looks like Grady lacks a grasp of it, from what I have witnessed. If our offense is so complicated that it takes a neurosurgeon to get a grasp of it, then it is useless. We can't keep turning the ball over like we have the first two games while the players get a grasp of the offense.

No shit, Sherlock. But I'll take Stitt's judgement over yours as to who's best suited to run the offense at this (or any other) stage.

Look at you, a couple weeks ago you are telling everyone that it is going to take years to reverse the damage that Mick did and for Stitt to get things rolling. Saying that we need to strap in for years of mediocrity.

Now, after two games and a win against NDSU you are questioning the offense and our QB's ability to operate it.

 :thumb:

A good coach would NEVER put the clear cut starter on the bench while the game is still on the line... I don't care if he did throw 3 interceptions. You play the guy that gives you the best chance to win. Period. Some of you have clearly never been on a football team before.

OK, I'll put you down for Gus is too stupid to run the offense. Who would you suggest instead?

Agreed, but not getting the context here. Are you suggesting that Gus does not have grasp? Others don't? ??
