On a separate but related note, talking with a um prof tonight and he said the incoming freshman class is going to be the largest in um history, has anyone else heard this rumor? He also said that the bills were coming due for msu's prez and her heavy handed tactics for increasing student numbers. Is there anything behind that rumor?

Heard recently that UM learned recently that enrollment would be down about 700 from what they were expecting for the fall. Don't know they were expecting; maybe they were expecting a huge increase. Enrollment numbers at main UM campus over 10,000, plus 2500 at college of technology (which only receives 1/4 of the state funding per FTE, compared to 1.0 for each FTE at main campus). About 17,000 at MSU-Bozeman. Don't know if any of this is accurate.
13,000 at the man campus is what I've heard.

One of the rare times a typo works better.

HA!

UM spring enrollment numbers:

"The 2014 spring semester headcount enrollment at the University of Montana is 13,554, a number that meets enrollment projections and reflects the high number of degrees awarded at the end of fall 2013. The spring enrollment is a 6.7 percent decrease from last fall’s enrollment of 14,525, which the University anticipated."

"The 14,525 enrollment number includes the enrollment at Missoula College (2,467) and the enrollment of Missoula high school students in college level courses (441).

So, using the fall '13 numbers for Missoula College and high school students taking college level courses, i.e. subtracting them from the spring '14 number (13,554 minus 2467 minus 441), the on-campus enrollment last spring was about 10,650. Of course, enrollment is apparently usually higher in the fall and lower in the spring. So, yes, the over 10,000 number looks light. I also heard that UM is quietly considering more fairly significant budget cuts. Again, don't know if what I heard has any basis in fact.

I hope there are a couple of typos there. When Engstrom took over, it was about 14,700 for UM and about 14,200 for MSU. If those projections for this Fall are close to accurate, that represents a change of historic proportions. No UM president has presided over a drop of that magnitude since WWII, and certainly none relative to MSU.

I do know that Main Hall has been telling everyone that they had been very successful at increasing Fall enrollment significantly. They were doing a victory dance earlier this summer. I had expected to get a couple of my sections cut, based on budget projections last spring, and was surprised today to see that none had been cut.

They weren't typos, but like I said, I have no idea if they are accurate. Just what I heard recently (and the info wasn't from the admissions director).

This were fall '13 numbers:

"The 14,525 enrollment number includes the enrollment at Missoula College (2,467) and the enrollment of Missoula high school students in college level courses (441).

The total number of students going to school full time – which means 15 credits a semester for undergrad and 12 credits a semester for graduate students – is 11,964."

"Montana State University officials announced today that 15,294 students are attending classes at MSU this fall, an enrollment record for the university."

I agree that the number I stated don't seem right, based on looking at '13 numbers.

However, MSU is now obviously way bigger than UM.

And now, if I recall correctly from another thread discussing this, MSU is facing trouble trying to fund some academic programs due to spending a lot of money in recruiting students the past few years.

I saw that post too, but is it accurate? I just did some Googling and didn't find any support for that statement. In fact, there seemed to be Chronicle articles to the contrary. The engineering dept is supposedly busting out at the seams, attracting alot of out of state students (who pay the big tuition), and has the recent $50 million donation.
