GRIZ, WSU, GU....etc

I am watching Gonzaga/Wazzu game now. This game started absolutely ugly. I am not sure if it is 2 great defenses, or bad offenses. Although WAZZU is finally hitting shots. Both teams play at high pace, but have very little patience when it comes to working for a good shot. The 1st half has been marked by many forced and undisciplined shot selection, on both sides.

This game combined with GRIZ shooting struggles, UCLA's anemic offense, Idaho's pathetic showing has me wondering a few things. (1) Are there less pure high percentage perimeter shooters in the Western USA? (2) Are defenses that much better these days? (3) Have the GRIZ narrowed the gap compared to the more recognized teams regionally? (4) Where does our foursome of Cherry, Qvale, Selvig, and Jamar/Steward combo rank amongst programs west of the Mississippi River? (5) Is discipline and ball movement being coached less at the HS levels, and more difficult to instill at the collegiate level?

As the season progresses, we shall see what the answers are to these questions. As for #4, I will take the GRIZ key players at PG, SF, PF, and C against most any team in the western region. Qvale and Selvig paint combo is very good. We are fortunate to have them. Cherry does more for the GRIZ than any PG, and might be the best defensive PG in the west. If and when we get consistent SG play, the GRIZ will be much better.

After seeing other programs, I realize many other programs struggle with offense and shooting too. The bigger more known programs have more talent to fill their depth charts. Other than that, the GRIZ are on par with most regional programs, and are narrowing the gap with them. The GRIZ also play with more discipline and know how to work the ball for open shots better than many teams. If we ever start hitting the open shots consistently, that would help.

I am going to try watching more regional teams. I am thinking we stack up better now regionally now than we have in a long time. As far as Gonzaga and WAZZU, I sure wish we had any combination of Thompson (wazzu guard), Casto (wazzu F/C), and Gray (Gonzaga G/F). Gray or Thompson as a GRIZ SG would complete us nicely. :thumb:

BTW 30-24 WAZZU at the half.

4 minutes into the 2nd half, both teams made great adjustments at halftime. All the sudden WAZZU is moving the ball great and getting great shots. WAZZU is looking like a much better team right now. Let's see if Gonzaga will step it up. If they don't they may get ran out of the building. We shall see.

Speaking of SG and WAZZU, I wonder what happened to Michael Harthun? After researching, he transferred to Portland State, and is sitting out this year. The GRIZ recruited him out of high school. I wonder how well he will do at PSU? I think he will be very good at PSU next year.

WOW, WAZZU has kicked GU ass all over the place in the 2nd half. Thompson has taken control this half, and Gonzaga has given up. Gonzaga has turned the ball over a lot and they need to learn to play defense again. It has been non existent the 2nd half.

Like UCLA, GU has talent, but they have a lot to work on too. I expect they will be at the top of the WCC again though. They are not near the Gonzaga they have been the last decade though. They are hurting in the execution department.

Thompson and Aden are quite the offensive combo for WAZZU. WAZZU certainly looks like a very good tea this year. Will be surprised to see them contend in the PAC 10 this year. They are underrated but have a very solid team with an impact player in Klay Thompson. Nice game WAZZU.

Will GU rebound from this?

Great kudos from Marcus Johnson towards the Griz near the end of the Wazzu/Zag game. He was talking about UCLA's 4 game losing streak and mentioned it ended with, "Wayne Tinkle's guys going in there and winning handily. I'll tell you, people don't get to see a lot of Montana, but that wasn't really that much of an upset. I really like Tinkle. Montana went into Washington and gave the Huskies all they could handle last year".

go Montana!

I had forgotten that Ken Bone was coaching Wazzu until I flipped on that game. What an ass-kicking they gave the Zags in the second half. Good for him.

Harthun is one heck of a good drop down, imho.

PSU seems to be a very popular destination for drop downs/transfers in recent past. most have worked quite well. dominguez, the jones forwards, nelson, now harthun and seems like im missin one or two(guard from hawii). anyways just noticed that.

Looks like psu got ANOTHER transfer in gary winston from idaho per espn.com. tinkle mentioned him prior to the idaho game and said he played a game or two then left the program. he was michael weisnars teamate in high school and was recruited by UM.

The kid from Hawaii was Waters. He was a local Portland kid that transfered back to his home town.

Harthun should be a good one. I think that his minutes were probably limited, so Bone threw Geving a bone. Or so to speak...
