GRIZ/Weber State game thread

Thanks to the Weber fans for their civil posts tonight. That just doesn't happen very often in such a tightly contested game. I, for one, appreciate it a lot.

Nothing but class across the board.

Good game. Only complaint was that bogus charge foul on Berry. And I never complain about officiating. Oh well, Griz defiantly deserve to go dancing. Tinkle is one hell of a coach to do what he did with this team following the injuries to Ward and Cherry. Good luck in the NCAAs.
Has Rahe got Weebs to the big dance in his tenure there? Not trolling, just curious. We sure seem to have his number when it comes to crunch time. I think Cherry's freshman year you guys went, but I dunno...
Cherry's freshman year was AJs senior year...remember that game?

Who?

Really surprised by all the non-calls tonight. Each of them were crashing and slapping without any call. Then the unexpected one, like that late charge call. Though it worked both ways, so evened out in the end. Great contest, so congrats to both squads. Heck of a year for Weber and UM.
Go Griz :ugeek:

Nice going Weebs fans. Class does count and you showed it tonight. Wherever the Wildcats end up you can count on Griz nation support. :thumb:

To the Weber Posters. You have a great team, obviously the game could have gone either way. But glad we won... Couldn't understand why Wheelwright( sorry for the spelling) didn't play more. Looks like a tremendous player, but didn't see the floor that much. Is there an attitude problem or ?
I have been wondering that all season long.
You guys probably saw Wheels at his best tonight. That being said, most of the time, he has proven to be more of a liability than an asset. That's why he doesn't see more playing time. He takes questionable shots, he's very lazy on defense and he turns the ball over twice as much as he dishes out assists. Wheels can look hugely talented sometimes, given his extreme athleticism, but he plays more like an undisciplined street baller than a D-I starter.

Martin not ready for the ball again...just an observation

Have you maybe thought that when someone else says something bad its whining but when you do it's an observation? Just an observation here bro

That could be the case, but you were definitely whining about the officials

No I wasn't. I don't whine. I'm actually impartial to the victor of this game as I am a byu alum. Sorry but you're wrong in your observation.... Or whining... Whatever your distorted mind thinks

Return of Kessman! I knew you would be back some day!

Alright! I finally got to watch the game! Fantastic start to finish and everything you could want from a Weber/UM matchup! I thought Jordan did a fantastic job on Bamforth, he really kept him from getting good looks and bottled him up. I love Gregory's attitude. He was obviously tasked with that job on D and he really gave it his absolute best. I know Martin missed three great passes, but I will credit him for being great on D. He affected that end of the court a lot just with his presence. Now if he could just wake up early enough to comb his hair before the games. Cherry and Jamar just weren't going to be denied and Jamar proved why he is the MVP tonight. He really worked Bamforth on the Offensive end. Crowd looked great. Wish they would show up the whole season like that. Especially the students.

Weber posters, you all have a great team. I am still not sure how we beat you all when you have your big three in the front court. I hope your team does well in whatever tournament you wind up in. It's big of you all to come on here after the game and offer kudos. I know I usually have to give it a day before I can get back on the board after a loss. Also, did any of you that post make the trek to Missoula for the game? If so, how were you treated? Hope well!

Twas a bogus call to be sure, it was preceded by an equally terrible call on the Weber drive when Hutch (I believe) was called for a phantom block. When the whistle blew the 5 guys around me looked at each other and mouthed "makeup call". There were numerous terrible calls (BSC refs), kind of par for the course, must say that with Berry DQ'ed we came out on top in the bad call in that minute sweepstakes. He's a heck of a player, fun to watch even if he's not on your team.

Bamforth is a good player and a great shooter, it appeared to me he tried to intimidate Gregory early throwing elbows and shoulders on the dribble and the refs looked the other way. Not whining  , but down the stretch drive he was contained by JG and Will. Was a great game to be at, 2 teams going all out to get a W and came down to the wire. A Dahlberg classic for sure.

Have to give props to a couple Weebs guys who approached Ward post game when the bedlam ensued and the traditional line didn't happen that seemed to say they had battled for years and appreciated that Ward was a class act. Not sure, but I think one was Tresnak. Givien the circumstance of just having lost a tough rivalry game this is nothing but class. Kudos to Weebs and coach Rahe, we love Tinks because he is a class act and coach Rahe aspires to the same thing. I hope we kick Weebs ass in the future but can appreciate a class program and if they get the better of us next year I'll be in their corner come tourney time

To tell the truth, this is one year I thought UM would fade because of the near constant injuries and great shooting of Weber. What little I was able watch of this game made me an even more ardent supporter of this coaching staff. What they did with adversity is phenomenal. A great win in a great season.
As for Weber, I noticed they were the only Big Sky school that seemed to actually care enough to send their band and cheerleaders and some great fans. All in all, these two schools are the cream of the Big Sky basketball league. Good to see.

What an awesome game. When Cherry hits the 3 near the end of the game, the roar was really deafening. Electric atmosphere. The fireworks and confetti were a nice touch at the end. I love watching students rush the floor. Well worth the drive from Polson.

.....and from Lake Roosevelt....

Great win by the Griz! It seemed to me that they kept Weebs off balance all night. Great game plan by WT.

As an aside, I used to watch a lot of basketball. My step-dad took me to most home Griz games back in the Sugar Ray Richardson era. And I kept watching until I moved away from Missoula in 1980. It sure seems the game has changed a lot since then. Whereas in football they call the rules very tight, especially illegal motion and false start, in basketball they have become very loose with traveling and double dribble. I saw many times that the ball handler slide his pivot foot, maybe even more often than not. And on what I recall as the second possession by Weber, the break away after the ball steal, the ball handler was dribbling and at about half court as the ball came up from the floor he touched it with his right hand and then moved it to his left and continued dribbling. Unless I am mistaken that used to be called as double dribble. I am not sure the game is better off for loosening of the rules or not.

Interesting to read this thread after the fact....

1. Multiple comments on Cherry should not be shooting 3's - but he did make 1....good thing he took it.

2. Multiple comments on the Griz getting out homered on foul calls. Although Weber shot more more fouls, the fouls were almost even at 19 vs 20

3. Lots of early complaining about Martin, yet his numbers dont look that bad defensively in the end. 6 rebounds, a block shot and a steal...plus 18 minutes of play. Not bad for the youngster, and he will be very good next year, especially if he bulks up.
