GRIZ/Weber State game 2 thread

too bad the loss at Weber is coming back to haunt the Griz as far as the tournament host...oh, well...win out and it can still happen..

Things are interesting in California, with North Dakota and Sac State tied at 32 a couple minutes into the second half...

It must really hurt them to fall to the back 6-9 and 11-15...and isn't that the same as their Women's team?

Best, or perhaps only, quote from their board about the game ↓

Are you serious? Montana by 20 or 30. Any Weber fan who would drive to Missoula to watch this laugher is more insane than our coaching staff. Montana loses their coach, Jamar, Ward, Deshields and is in contention. While Weber has fallen to the depths of the football program, while getting swept by the worst team in the country in Southern Utah. "

Well. There is that.

And that was in response to me simply saying I always expect a Good game and hoped to see a few fans here. Yeah, I'd say they've given up.

Ouch. It definitely is dead over there. In the game thread from last year there were 39 posts when they played the Griz in Missoula. This year.. 4... and one of them is a Griz fan.

The Weebs will bounce back next year. They had a tough season but they have a winning tradition and all that. It's the noDaks, NoCols, Suu, MSU, PSU and ISU that truly have nothing to be proud of in basketball. This conference is embarrassing for anyone behind NAU right now.

Sorry for the late post following the game. Just now got time to post. I went to the game. The GRIZ played absolutely terrific post defense, rebounded well, and played physical in the paint. As expected, the GRIZ did get Kemp more minutes to help keep their bigs from getting rebounding and post position. The GRIZ hedged the perimeter screens less often. The GRIZ did challenge Weber State to hit the 3. Weber State answered with great 3 point shooting for the 1st 13 minutes. Travis had patience and stuck with challenging them to hit the 3, they cooled down finally. Ironically enough, their cool down coincided with the GRIZ finding their 3 point shooting.

From the 7 minute mark of the 1st half to the end, the GRIZ controlled the game in all aspects. The GRIZ not only defended the paint well, but made sure they got bodies on Bolomboy and Hill on every shot. Kemp, Krslovic, and Breunig all rotated on him. Bolomboy quite frequently had 1 man on him, with a 2nd shadowing him, especially on the boards. He was given very little room to work offensively. He was often trapped when he got the ball on the low blocks and forced baseline. There was no way the GRIZ were going to let Bolomboy control the game on either end of the court. Absolutely the best defense the GRIZ have played since Qvale controlling the paint. The GRIZ dominated in the paint scoring, I am guessing a 20 point advantage there.

Offensively, also as expected, Travis used some clear outs and Breunig away from the basket. Weber State did a terrific job the 1st 8 minutes limiting the GRIZ effectiveness in the paint and from 3. Fortunately mid range shooting did enough to keep the GRIZ in the game, until they found the 3's falling.

In the 1st half Weber State actually controlled Breunig, Gfeller, and Gregory. I think they combined for less than 12 1st half points. Earlier in the season, that would have meant trouble. Fortunately Bradshaw, Weisner, and Dunn all filled the scoring void. The 2nd half Breunig and Gregory were their usual selves. Breunig controlled the boards after the half. The GRIZ picked up the pressure as well in the 2nd half keeping Weber State from closing the gap. It was nice to see the GRIZ finally not a let team back into the game the last 10 minutes.

I was also pleased the GRIZ were able to get very effective play with a solid 4 man rotation of Breunig, Krslovic, Kemp, and Weisner against Weber State. That was something I posted before the game that I wanted to see Travis work on for the remaining games.

Overall, I am very pleased with how the GRIZ played against Weber State. Also relieved to see I finally got on the same page with the team and staff. The coaching change, combined with new players made it take longer for me to get a solid understanding of this team this year. I think the last few weeks I was able to finally get a good read on the team and staff. The return of Weisner being healthy, and Bradshaw being very consistently good off the bench the past month have been the biggest factors for the better team play and results.

What a great game by the GRIZ, they seem to be peaking and getting better every game. Which is exactly what a coach wants at the end of the season. 3 more games, then the conference tournament. The GRIZ have to win out, in my opinion to host, and hope Sac State slips up somewhere. As for Weber State, I was really impressed with Golden. I like him a lot as a player. What year is he?

Great job GRIZ. I am happy I made the game. PR, you should be happy as hell that Kemp played well and played a significant role defensively and on the boards. He and all the frontline played their ASSES off in this game!!!!!!

I've been focusing on Bolomboy and can't figure out how he gets so few fouls called. Not just this game but most of them. Maybe, Breunig and Krslovic can get some pointers..

It is because he remains calm. He does nothing to make the officials focus more on him. I feel if Breunig and Weisner would have his demeanor they would have a few less calls on them too. Breunig is not disrespectful or anything, but he does show his displeasure or get in officials ears more often. Weisner, outright gets pissed at some calls. I do like how Travis let's his players show their personality though. It is one less thing the players have to worry about. Too many coaches try changing their players natural reactions and personalities.

Speaking of Travis, we will be lucky if he is here longer than 3 years. He has every intangible of a great coach. There really has not been much of a learning curve for him as a 1st time Div 1 head coach. His strategic adjustments are that of a great veteran coach. I hope Kent is preparing his next head coach candidates list already. He will need it much sooner than before. :thumb:

Thought it was very interesting to see how two of the top big men in the conference handled being double teamed.

Breunig - Finds open guys, didn't force bad shots and found other ways to contribute on offense when doubleteamed.

Bolomboy - Tried to drive through the double teams, turned it over, and basically got out-physical'd by a true freshman many times when he wasn't double teamed.

Thought Krslovic, Breunig and Kemp all did an amazing job keeping Bolomboy from having even a semi-decent game. They basically completely took him out of the game offensively for Weber.

Don't get me wrong, I think Bolomboy is a hell of a player, but just thought the above was interesting.

Also, after watching this game (and a few of Weber's other games) I really see why Weber fans are frustrated. Loads of talent on that team, yet it's not a "team". As one of their fans said:

"We don't play like a team and we don't have a leader. We just have individuals who think putting up numbers is being a leader."

Keeping Bolomboy to just five points is an outstanding measure of this coach and this team.

"They didn't like the pressure the first time we played them and I kind of felt like we waited too long to do it," said DeCuire, whose team forced 18 WSU turnovers. "And our team is better when we're aggressive when we're not second-guessing our movements on both sides of the ball. When we get after it we're a lot better team.

"We couldn't let him (Bolomboy) beat us and they found some things underneath, a couple of lay-ups," said DeCuire. "Once we finally got to the right spots we turned him over. He tried to force the issue because he's been scoring for them lately. It's hard for a big guy who's always on the receptive end when they double you to be patient.

"We forced a couple of turnovers and got some buckets in transition," DeCuire said. "We executed better out of the trap. Early when they were trapping Martin we turned it over and took a couple of tough shots. Once we settled down and executed the pass out we got the shot that we've been working on for months - Gfeller with his feet flat, Weisner with his feet flat, Jordan and even Mario, and Riley was huge off the bench for us."
