Griz vs Stanford

Thought if I just provide some info on Stanford:

Stanford is 2 and 1. All games have been at home so far.

Lost to UC Irvine. I guess an excuse would be that Stanford had to play without their starting center 6' 11" 230 pound Matt Haryasz who is averaging 17 points, 11.5 rebounds, and has a total of 5 blocked shots in 2 games. His replacement averages only 2.7 points and 2.0 rebounds.

Other than Haryasz, there are 3 other players averaging in double figures:

Forward Dan Grunfield, 18.7 points/game, 6.7 rebounds, 85% freethrow shooter (17 - 20).

Guard Chris Hernandez, 13.3 points/game. Matt Martin will have to play well defensively to contain this guy.

Forward Taj Finger, 10.7 points/game.

Overall, Stanford hasn't shot all that great over 3 games hitting only 39.7% from the field. Griz to win will need Stanford to continue this.

The fact that this is the first game on the road for Stanford could benefit the Griz. But, the Griz hasn't played anyone with a big Center like Haryasc. May have to rely a bit more on the perimeter shooting, or hope Hasquet comes out really big in this game (at least defensively), and the rest shoot very well hitting over 50% from the field like the previous games.

I liked the fact that Montana reduced the number of turnovers to 13 against Utah Valley State game. But, Stanford is like night and day better than Utah Valley State, and committing only 13 turnovers against Stanford would be good.

I can see Griz winning the game if committing only 13 turnovers, shooting better than 50% from the field, out-rebounding Stanford, and holding Stanford below 40% from the field.

Stanford by the way has been out-rebounding their opponents by a 39.7 to 33.7 margin. Haryasc is major reason of that and is one reason Griz really need to be able to stop him, and block him out keeping him away from the basket. Haryasc makes only 46% of his field goals, but hasn't missed a free throw yet. Only shot 8 free throws so far. The UC Irvine game is good enough proof on why Griz need to stop this guy. Maybe someone kick him in the knees can help.

Hope to see you all there. Highest attendance for a Griz basketball was a little over 7,300, though 1/2 of those just came to watch Monte. They called that a sellout, but it sure wasn't sold to capacity. Highest attendance for a Basketball game was 7,413 but that was by the basketball team of the other gender. That can be beat if they can count those comp tickets that sometimes are given out, but sadly they do not count toward attendance. There were 2 rows taken out for media in the game that had 7,413 in attendance, so that is why it can be beat.

9,000 plus in the place back when Idaho State was competitive.

I will be  if we get 4,500 to show.

I know that is absolutely unacceptable but I have not seen any response anywhere to the fact that Montana won the Big Sky tournament and plays an entertaining type of basketball. I will be happy to be wrong.

The figures I mentioned of course and everybody should figure out are since the remodel.

I would also be shocked if 4,500 show, but official attendance (including those that paid but do not show up) I predict possibly up to 5,000.

No offense true, but who won't you beat if you do all the things you mention as keys to beating Stanford????

The game will be broadcast only on Radio I believe.

Griz would have to do much better than that to beat Duke.

The snow should keep another few hundred fans at home, unfortunately.

Bring your galdamn kids though; If they're 12 or under they get in for FREE! Seriously. And it applies to all games this month.

Get them hooked young. Tell them Joe Camel likes griz basketball and they'll be putty in your palm.

The weather won't help, that's for sure. My group of three is up in the air due to traveling conditions.

But past that, I am so disappointed in the City of Missoula and their lack of support for Grizzly basketball. It's pathetic, just like their lack of support for high school athletics has been since the mid-nineties. As someone who grew up there, I'm embarassed. And I don't buy the line that Griz football has taken everybody over. Lots of places have good football teams and still support other sports. I live in Helena now, and the support here for area teams is night and day compared to Missoula. If we can't sell out Stanford at home, we have no chance IMHO.

I transferred here and couldn't figure out why students were not excited about basketball. I have a couple ideas now...reasons why my friends don't go (i went to 4 games last year by myself, worked other game nights) and i am generalizing towards the student body... First, after school you get all settled in, watch some tv, cook some dinner and have a smoke. By the time 7 rolls around your stuck to the couch and CSI or American Idol are much too entertaining and you forget all about the game. Second, griz football games are a weekly, outdoor event. They draw anticipation because students know there is a good chance of getting drunk and having a great time, possibly stories to tell come monday. The basketball games are fun, I love watching college b-ball, on t.v. or live. Sadly, the atmosphere does not excite, a lot of the students. Which leads to my final point. It is harder to drink at the games because of security and because we are within closer proximity to more kids. We do party, but most students party responsibly here and its awkward and shameful to act rowdy in front of kids. I love the students at the college, but its hard to get them motivated for basketball-even when the mens and womens teams are the tops in our respective conference.

Its funny that you should mention the difference between basketball popularity and football. My parents went to school here in the 70s, when the teams were good and won alot of games. Recently there hasn't been much to cheer about. Alot of the games were ugly, the teams were a disgrace academically, and the coaches all seemed a little corupt. I think with the new program, a new excitment will come around, but it will take some time. I would hope that we could have succesful football and basketball teams at the same time.

just a few things from this cat. first...hernandez is still there? he has to be a senior. martin is gonna have his hands full. secondly, it sucks that you guys cant get up for a weekend game vs a pac ten school. i'm not talking shit 'cause as a basketball fan, i get pissed too when the fieldhouse is empty for games. but one poster did have a point. as much as the older generation hates it, one of the biggest draws to events is alcohol! sure the foptball team is great. but all it takes is one guy who wants to watch football, and he brings his 10 friends who want to get wasted! it's just not there for basketball. sometimes, you want to have fun and party before the big game, but then you remember the big game is a thursaday night, the temp is 10 below with the wind, the snow is coming down by the foot, and oh ya, there is no booze! i see how it could happen. i know my fellow cats are gonna bash me, but take it to the pac-10! if a team was gonna beat a good team from a major conference, i wish it was montana state, portland state, weber state, sac state, eastern washington, idaho state, or northern arizona! but they'e not playin them, so.......represent!

It wasn't hard to get up for Griz basketball games in the past, I don't buy those arguements at all. It's plain and simple, the administration has alienated students and the have never come back after the remodel. As soon as they get the students back, more season ticket holders will emerge because of an improved atmosphere, then the young kids come, etc. It will snowball if they get the students back and front and center. I think Krysko might be capable of it, but it hasn't happened yet.

If last year is any indicator, I believe you are correct. A big step to program (re)building is being able to attract and then hang onto a coach who can get it done. This will require multi-year contracts. Time for the regents to get that done.

Montana-74
Stanford-71

adams box office doesn't indicate that there are any tickets left for tonight's game. Does anyone know if they are sold out?

anybody have tickets they want to give away?

It is hard for ordinary human beings to put down the $550 GAA fee in order to buy a season ticket. Many do not remember that at remodel time they threw out the season ticket holders who had been supporting basketball for 30 years and brought in yellow shirted security thugs. The yellow shirts have been replaced by cream colored shirts watching for fake Montes dropping bombs. I have not missed a game because I feel it is necessary to witness the success in case someone reports false information on this site but I have to rely on the old general to get me admission. Going to be a great game to watch lets crowd out the general.
