Griz vs. South Dakota

Final, 67-62, SD.

Montana gave this one away on poor shooting in the last five minutes. "Just went cold."

Well f-ck.

What the hell happened to the Griz shooting the last 5 minutes. They missed some open 3 ball looks in an UGGGGGGGLLLLLYYYY fashion.

This year's Griz simply cannot finish in the clutch, at least, so far....Conference is competitive and they need to get over the end of game fold.

Never would have I have guessed FT and 3 PT shooting would be this team's weaknesses before the season started. Since the season started, every game I expect the GRIZ to break out and get over the bad shooting. It just is not happening. Sorry, I am so disappointed in the losses to USF, Milwaukee, and SD.

I am concerned shooting may not become consistent enough to get the GRIZ to a conference contender this season. Right now, I see an average conference team. For me, that is disappointing.

Unfortunately they have taken some quantum leaps backward the last few games--hopefully they snap out of this funk PRONTO!!!

37-33 GRIZ at halftime. GRIZ surprisingly doing well, despite the absence of Breunig, Weisner, and Edmonds. Kemp has stepped it up nicely offensively. Solid support from Gfeller, Bradshaw, and Lopez as well. Bradshaw looking much more comfortable offensively than he has in the past.
Just back from the game. I am glad to hear that neither Breunig or Edmonds had grade issues. Hopefully, they will be back along with Weisner at 100% when conference starts in ten days. This team is thin in terms of depth. This was not the time to falter at the free throw line. I really hesitate to be critical of individual players but several guys who I wish would have stepped up given the missing players really did not. I don't think this is an effort issue either, unfortunately, it seems to be a talent issue. :( Krslovic and Kemp did step up but were understandably gassed towards the end of the game. Also, the loss of Keron Deshields this season really hurts.

You do know that we played this game with 7 (8 if you count the token minute of Nwosu) guys don't you? and without 3 starters? Guys lost their legs at the end. Most notably Gregory. With Bruenig , Weisner, and Edmonds we win this game easily.

I do, the fact is if they hit FT's and even average perimeter shooting.........they win. I am disappointed because they lose close game after close game for the same reasons, bad FT shooting and perimeter shooting. These things are costing this team wins. It is very frustrating and disturbing. I doubt Travis or the players are accepting this loss because of key players being out. Instead they too are probably pissed at letting yet another game slip away.

Yes the loss of key players in any sport makes things more difficult. Any worthwhile coach will not use that as an excuse for letting winnable games slip away. Instead they will use it to improve the team. Come conference play these things are even magnified. Out of conference records means nothing in the Big Sky because it is a 1 bid conference. Because of it being a 1 bid conference, these things will hurt a lot more and be a lot more costly in conference play.

Even completely healthy, this team has lost because of the same things costing them.

The Gogriz.com article on the game states Edmonds was held out of the game for academic reasons. Hopefully, he is not ineligible now. That would be a huge blow.

Don't blame the officials:

Worst team that I can remember

- No defense
-Can't Shoot free throws
-No emotion
- No game plan except to run, run, run

A coach that shows lack of head coaching experience

Totally disgusted with this staff

Might actually start missing some games- I won't be the only one

A few general comments to add to the thread, having been courtside...

• Edmonds was in sweats and joined the team on the bench... visibly very subdued. In past situations like this, players with serious academic issues usually don't sit on the bench. Hope it's a minor issue.

• Weisner was in sweats but Breunig in street clothing. Neither had a boot on; both pretty mobile. Breunig very communicative with his teammates.

In the postgame radio interview, Travis DeCuire said he was most disappointed in missed freethrows and his team's continued inability to make the plays down the stretch. He said it was an attitude and toughness issue and that coaches have added several drills in practice geared toward stepping it up in the crunch.

However, DeCuire said even more damaging was Montana's failure to take advantage of the lead they built early in the 2nd half: Montana seemed to get passive with that lead and couldn't maintain an edge midway through the second half when they had built a 10-point lead. He said it's important for his team to recognize they have to maintain that competitive edge after gaining an advantage... not to try to find it after the opponent has battled back into the game.

DeCuire did not criticize shooting. He said that his players are capable of making the shots. Open shots. They just didn't. No criticism. Just the truth.

Second half stats support DeCuire's statements: The Griz shot 46.7% from the field and 38.5% from three in the first half; a miserable 32% from the field and 14.3% from three. For the game, 57.9% from the free throw stripe. It was obvious that South Dakota got significantly more aggresive during the second half (7 fouls in the first three minutes), and the Griz didn't respond. Kemp: 0-4. Two misses by Jack Lopez in the crunch were killers.

Statistically most damaging for the Griz were Riley Bradshaw's stats (he played an energetic floor game, drove well & had numerous wide-open shots): but he shot only 2 for 10 from the field, 1-of 6 from three (very open looks), and 1 of 2 from the ft line. His frustration and disappointment post-game was visible; felt sorry for him.

GOOD SIGNS: I was most impressed with the play of freshman post Fabijan Krslovic: 3-for 3 from the field, 2 for two from the line; NINE rebounds... 5 on offense; 8 points and a steal. He's also playing outstanding defense.

Kris Kemp also had a good game. 12 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the field, 6 rebounds and improving defense. But he'll have to start making free throws or opposing teams will foul him before he can shoot.

Bottom line: Griz won't win many (any) games shooting 32% from the field and 57% from the stripe. This game boiled down to missed open shots. It was a game that the Griz, even without 3 of their top six players, could have won by making 2 or three of those open shots down the stretch. Or, could have won easily going away if they had shot 5-to-10 percent better through the entire second half.

I wouldn't say Bradshaw's poor shooting was any more critical than Gfeller's or Gregory's. Riley hasn't played more than 10-15 minutes a game in the last 5-6 games and he hasn't attempted more than 4-6 shots in any game. His 2-10 included two 3-point attempts in the final 15 seconds after he had sat the previous 5 minutes. Gfeller was 2-8 and Gregory 6-17. You aren't going to win many games when your starting back court is 10-35 from the field.

You're correct, Montanamagic. My comments regarding Bradshaw are unduly harsh in retrospect. Going further, it's obvious that these young players are pushing themselves while learning a new system and they're all probably pretty down on themselves for their low shooting percentages. It was obvious that RB was hurting (not physically) right after the final buzzer went off.

I also don't want to indicate that I am unfairly singling out any player. Today the combination of a depleted roster and the fact that, as Travis DeCuire said post-game, they're ALL like freshmen because they're trying hard to master a completely new system as conf. rolls around.
