Griz vs SF

Too many missed FTs down the stretch. Obviously KDS's ugly first miss was the key, but KJ missed two earlier. And, of course, too many offensive boards given up, and too many points in the paint.

DAMN, we gave that game away. I'd be pissed if I were Wayne. We had too many turnovers, gave up too many offensive rebounds, bad FT shooting, and did not get back on defense. There are no excuses for losing that game. The GRIZ did not consistently do the little things. I guess the bright side is, this team will likely not have another game with that many turnovers, and most games get back well on defense. FT shooting certainly disappointing thus far this season.

Defensively, we need Martin in the paint. It is hard to get him in there, maybe some sort of substituting him on dead balls for defensive purposes. Gregory was not himself defensively either, due to his ankle. We should have lost by more. The GRIZ did not play their game this one, and very little of it had to do with SF defense.

Well, f*ck. That left me with a really bad taste in my mouth.

Thank god I get to gargle with a pasting of the kitties tomorrow.

This is going to be an interesting BSC race this year. By the way, the EAGS beat a good Boston University team tonight by 14 points.

Out rebounded.....we have no inside game...this does not do us well down the road

We really need Breunig this season. Next season he and Kemp will make for a nice C/PF combination. Martin will be a JR and ready to step up as well. The inside game can only improve though this season.

Didnt see the game, but my only question is how in the hell does Mario Dunn only play 8 minutes?

To be honest, I questioned that at halftime. I thought for sure, Keron deserved to lose minutes. His 1st half was really bad. Meanwhile, Dunn did nothing to not deserve more time. I have a feeling Wayne wants Dunn to earn it more, and be hungrier. He also knows we need to build Keron up as well. Had it been a conference game, I am sure Keron would have lost minutes to Dunn there. Keron really hurt his team in the 1st half. Defensively, Keron is very good. Offensively, he is so inconsistent.

Just back from the game...Mario did not impress in the first half and threw a couple of wild passes. I am sure he is going to be a huge contributer by the season's end, but tonight was not his night. I am not surprised Wayne played him sparingly in the second half. I am afraid our lack of a productive center is going to really haunt us this season. Kemp and Weisner battled courageously but they have a real tough time defending against bigger players. SF killed the Griz inside. Neither Hutch or Andy did much and I suspect Kemp will be starting at the five soon even though he is probably no bigger than 6'6". Like it or not, small ball is probably the best way for the Griz to go. We really could use Breunig this year. I also find myself wishing more and more that Wiley had stuck around. Gregory was clearly hobbled and this made it even easier for SF to constantly hound and surround Kareem, especially in the second half. With a healthy Gregory, the Griz will win a bunch of games this year in large part to the three ball.

This post is accurate, especially the Dunn part. DeShields was 5-7 from the field. Too many turnovers (4). Missed a critical free throw. He needs to play better, but he didn't play poorly.

I agree with all your points, Weisner lacks heft and Kemp lacks height in the post, they both work hard on position but a few times Weisner simply was overpowered by 25 and he could get it over Kemp on Orebounds.

On offense they dribble the ball side to side too much, allows double teams on the dribbler above the top of the key, caused a few turnovers as well when passing out of the dt. It's also not good when you shoot more 3's than regular shots. SF tightened up their perimeter D later in the game, more contested 3's late rather than the wide open looks early that the guys were splashing.

In summary I see it the same way as most everyone that has posted. I have to add to what someone said earlier about Kareem and Kemp developing some chemistry, KJ made some nice feeds to him and he made some strong moves and finished with authority. The only problem is that he lacks the size to get over bigger posts and was checked a few times because of it, I hope he stays aggressive. So I guess we know what we have but the small lineup should not turn the ball over this often. It's early with a lot of new players getting significant PT so it will be a work in progress.

Deshields had a lousy 1st half. He played better in the 2nd half. I was just surprised Dunn did not see more minutes at PG after a lousy 1st half by Keron. He needs to find some consistency at PG. Defensively, I like Keron a lot. Dunn and Deshields each have a lot of potential. Unfortunately, there will be some growing pains at PG, regardless who gets how many minutes.

While the Griz should and could have won the game multiple ways, and made too many mistakes, I feel better about the team after this game than I did from what I had seen previously. They have good talent and good depth, except are not strong in the post. They will improve.

After playing 7 and 3 minutes in prior games, Kemp played 28 minutes. Kemp started the 2d half. He has talent. He can score close to the basket and finish. He was 5-7--a miss from underneath that he should have made in first half and a good block by SF. His defense was good in certain situations and not good in other situations. He can cover than perimeter better than Hutch. He will improve with more playing time, and coaching.

Kareem was, of course, good, but missed 2 free throws later in the game, a wide open 3 late in the game, and the last bucket. Otherwise, he was terrific, despite being doubled at times.

Gregory was hampered by injury but still played fairly well. That hurt us. 3Feller started fro Gregory. 3Feller missed 2 3's in the first half, nailed 3 in a row in the 2d, and missed 1. Shoots the high-arking 3. He made a few mistakes but will be a very good player. Dunn didn't have his best game, but he will be a good player. Weisner played 39 minutes and had a nice game. His 3 is better this year than it was last year, and it was good last year.

Too many turnovers, not good enough D in the paint (and Hutch had trouble with the big guy shooting the 3), and not enough rebounding and boxing out (during the game and on free throws). While UM isn't going to dominate the paints, all of these things can be fixed or improved significantly.

Decent crowd of 3600. Could and should have been louder. Good officiating. Dance team was terrific. Decent student section crowd.

Again, Dunn didn't have a good game. Didn't deserve more minutes. In 8, was 0-1, no rebounds, 1 foul, 3 turnovers, and no assists.

And had a TERRIBLE turnover that turned it from a one possession game to a two possession game.

Dunn didn't handle the trap at all. They jumped him a couple of times and he struggled with it and as a result we didn't get into offense. With more experience that won't be an issue for him in the same manner it wasn't for Will. No one even tried to trap Will once he figured it out.

That is why the decision was a tough one for Wayne. Deshields is the more experienced player and knows play like in his 1st half should mean bench time. Dunn's one shot was a good shot, well within the offense. One turnover was Kemp not being ready to handle a nice pass. The other, Dunn tried a very difficult pass, and a pass that many players would even see. I could not tell from the online feed, either the timing with Gfeller was a little off, or he threw that pass a little too high. I just think Dunn is a more natural PG offensively. Defensively, I have confidence in both of them. I do agree, Dunn was not great. My personal opinion of what we have seen so far this season, Deshields has not done enough to keep Dunn from developing with more minutes.

The GRIZ need better PG play regardless of how the minutes are distributed. I do hope they both find their games. I just expect much more out of the more experienced PG. Not here to argue with anyone. Wayne has some tough decisions to make on who to play when to make the position better. I do feel 12 to 16 minutes to Dunn is a fair expectation when Deshields is struggling. Wayne seems to have a longer leash with Deshields than he did with Cherry and Jamar when they were being broken in. Sorry, I was very disappointed in Keron's 1st half play. I am sure Wayne was too. However, Wayne has too much class to make that known publicly. He will handle things behind the scenes. Collectively, we need more disciplined play and leadership at PG.

Good analysis from all who posted. If I differ from anyone, it's that I'm not overly worried about this loss; it'll be remedied by the coaches.

The givens? Montana has a problematic frontcourt & that's something they'll probably struggle with all year. Griz will have to learn how to win games where they're outrebounded, or else they'll be also-rans. The positive is that they got 10 points from the post and a much improved game from Chris Kemp, so I'm not really worried.

Guard play was ok, but I believe this is the first game I've seen where not having Will Cherry patrolling the middle of the transition court has really hurt the Griz. Kareem can do it, but he's better suited for other aspects of transition play. Keron must learn it, & I think he can. Poor Mario! he'd probably never seen dual guard traps of this caliber & he had that "caught in the headlights" look. He'll learn, but WT knew last night was not the time or place for Mario to learn this.

By my observation this was a coaches game that SF won. The Dons came into this game prepared & had the edge on a first half battle. Griz adjustments at halftime swung the tide toward Montana's progressively impressive perimeter game (Brandon GFeller is a developing shooting star) and a 47-42 lead with about 13 minutes left to play. Time out San Francisco.

From there the Dons employed all-court dual-guard trapping pressure that Montana simply did not/could not handle. Over the next three minutes Dons guard Chris Adams had three steals (all of which were converted into early O points) and the Dons ramped up the game flow that caught the Griz off guard (which really puzzled me) & the game -- which was on the verge of a fairly easy Montana win -- swung dramatically toward SF.

The Griz never adjusted to the Dons dual-guard sideline traps with any kind of dribble enter penetration & hence their offense became suddenly stagnant. Sort of a miracle, actually, that the Griz were even in it with a minute left.

With all that said, the Griz could still have won it by making any one of their three missed free throws over the final 47 seconds. But when you let a game get down to the final bounces... well, that's basketball.

I say it was a coaches game because of the change of approach by San Francisco (behind? get going with all-court pressure) not to imply any criticism of Montana coaches. But the flow of the game changed & Montana did not respond to the tempo & pressure.

That will all change with more experience. I believe Keron is playing the point acceptably. We'll just have to see how the Griz handle that kind of pressure in the future (I'd love to see Keron attack the bucket on transition like Will did... let him loose!).

I know this much: the comments by both Keron and Kareem in the Missoulian article indicate they realize that & have already taken the mental steps toward being ready for that kind of scenario in the future.

My biggest disappointment? Very GOOD crowd attendance (3600 plus) in an early season game. Fans are ready to embrace Griz hoops... too bad the game had to fizzle out in such a frustrating fashlion.
