SDSU schooled us on baseline, offensive rebounding all night and when it came time for penetration and buckets we got stuffed.
our outside game was also a bit weak when we needed it...
BUT- SDSU is a quality team that would also be the cream of the Big Sky and will likely be a NCAA contender in March...
can we up our inside game in time to compete in a grueling conf season???

Well, Tinks said the Griz were right where he thought they'd be going into this game. But they didn't win, so time to regroup and figure some stuff out, because while the Big Sky might be weakened this year, right now I don't see another 15-1 run in em. Time will tell.
Biggest crowd of the year so far, and no students in town. Will probably be the 3rd highest attended game all year - MSU if they do the tailgate (which is pretty damn fun by itself usually), then I expect NAU in March to be bigger.tourist said:I see the attendance was 3,400. I haven't followed basketball in a LONG time, so forgive my ignorance, but is this considered a good crowd? Dalberg seats about 7,000 as I recall.
I think the problem right now is more of youth and philosophy, not talent. Griz are playing a lot of young kids, and the kids that are playing want to play like a sports car - fast and reckless. they want (and have asked Tinkle) to let them run a 3/4 trap from the opening tip, and move up and down the court, shooting without a conscience. However Tinkle wants workman that show up with lunch pails and hard hats. He want's 1/2 court sets and a pound inside and kick outside game. These boys he recruited were not really cut out for that , so they need to grow into it or move on. I really hope they adapt and buy in, cause the Griz men's BB team, with a 33% graduation rate, can't afford to keep recruiting the wrong kids for a system they don't buy into.GrizLA said:This might be the year the Big Sky will be in the play off game. Very bad league from top to bottom and I am surprised. Even with Cherry, I am afraid that UM would be exactly as they are now....until a talented big guy or two are recruited, this is a regional team, nothing more.

This season reminds me a lot of 2002. Hopefully when Cherry returns full time he can provide the leadership to get the rest of the team to buy-in, and it doesn't take a rebellion to win a Championship that talent alone says they should win.

I was at the game last night and Wolters was impressive with his passing abilities and the ability to keep his composure and find other ways to be productive other than scoring. Reminds me of Stockton when he played at GU. Stockton was little quicker and finished better, but the "gift of passing and floor vision" is there for this kid.
As for the Griz I thought they were 10-12 points better even with out Cherry, if they were allowed to play fast and use their quickness and athleticism. When they got out and ran off D-boards the really exposed weaknesses in SDSU and showed that this style of play is more suited for the personnel they have. We just don't have the quality inside back-to-the-basket post presence that we've had in the past. Ward is more of SF or a shooting PF that is better facing up defenders than posting them up. I think playing fast is better for his strengths and the guards that the Griz have. It's clear that this group's productivity goes down playing a slow down 1/2 court style. Same with the defense. I understand Tinks might not be a strong defensive coach and is comfortable with staying with the "Evans Zone" , but the Zone on makes and Man on misses strategy has it's holes in it and vs. good ball movement and decent shooting teams like SDSU it gives up too many open looks. SDSU got a lot of open looks and fortunately for the Griz they were cold in the 1st half and for parts of the 2nd or this game probably wouldn't have made it to one OT.
Again, if you're going to stay with the zone then mix it up and throw some traps in and extend it like what was suggested above and use your quickness and athletes to create some turnovers that lead to easy buckets.
Maybe there was some mis-communication with Tinks and his asst. on what personnel he wants or prefers through recruiting. I'm not sure, but this group needs to play fast if they are going to be successful in my opinion.
